The Russian River Brewing Company's Pliny the Younger has become a phenomena. See why people from around the world flock to Santa Rosa California once a year to get a taste before the taps run dry.

Living in the bay area, i've been lucky enough to taste both Pliny the Elder and Pliny the Younger. They really are amazing beers. Even when Pliny is on tap at one of my local eateries, the crowd is always bigger and they end up selling out within the week.

Greatest beer ever and this year was fantastic thanks again Vinnie for brewing my personal favorite and the Elder is so good too, it only comes in second to Younger.

what's insane is that Pliny has been around for years, it's 2017, I only live two hours from the brewary and it's still near impossible to get unless I drive to the brewary. however, a four hour trip for a couple cases of Pliny isn't bad. I know 98% of the country doesn't have the luxury of driving a few hours to get it but I still can't believe that despite living only two hours away I still can't find it in stores haha

Have not had the pleasure of drinking Pliny the Younger, but have brewed the home brew kit from Morebeer's Russian River's Pliny the Elder, 3 times, awesome beer.

It's the dry hopping. It really doesn't last long and leaves a grassy unpalatable flavor as it fades.

Russian River is very exclusive and mostly distributed in Northern California. If you can make it to San Francisco you can definitely grab a pint.

Agreed. dictionary.reference.com/browse/pliny They can call their beer whatever they want, but they just look stupid mispronouncing the Roman guy's name.
@vireogilvus9 жыл бұрын
***** YOU may pronounce the beer differently, as those RRBC folks do, but I do not.
@dustinbasurto73717 жыл бұрын
In my opinion this is a minor mis-pronunciation. Not as obtuse as the mis-use of saison turned into session beer.

Pliny hype! :D As a gamer I'm used to hype, but going from NY, even Canada to California to taste this beer when it comes out every year is some srsly mad hype lol
@ldwiv0411 жыл бұрын
We can get it close by about every 4-5 weeks, but its a single bottle limit, and you have to know when it's coming in.

Philly gets a pretty solid RR distro. The elder is often on tap somewhere in the city and the younger makes it to about 10 bars at the beginning of March. Or at least it has for the last 2 years.

The big deal here is that it's difficult to make high gravity, high % alcohol beers like Pliny the Younger. The yeast will fight you all the way to the finish and you often get a stuck fermentation. There is also the challenge of balancing these beers to not be too malty, too hoppy and too much off flavor form the intense fermentation, like alcohol. The aroma, appearance, taste and mouth feel all have to be on mark. When you find a brewer that can make a good one then you have found someone with a skill and talent that not every brewer/brewery posses. People are celebrating both an excellent finished product and the talents of the brewer for making it.

Limited distribution makes getting a bottle very tough. There are talks of expansion. Maybe in the near future it may be easier to get.

I wish his dream of people being able to try his beer was true. Outside of that area of Cali, it's impossible to get Pliny the Elder. Sitting here in NY, I've never tried any Russian river.

how much does it cost to make pliny the younger? I love the elder and man is it hard to get even in southern california.

What camera was used in this video? The b-roll of the "what's on tap" boards, the Vinny interview, the opening shot of the brewery, etc. Exceptional quality, and probably shot at 1080p.

Nice video. Side note: I can't believe the server at Russian River don't know not to "dip" the faucet in the beer with every serve. It's gross and besides, it also creates yeast build up in the faucet. Blaahh!

Linnaeus created the name 'humulus lupulus'. Pliny does mention lupus salictarious, but he doesn't say what it is. It could have been hops, might not have been.

RR is great but they NEED TO CAN BOTH PLINYS IN FOUR PACK PINT CANS like some other of the best breweries in the world. They can do it and consumers if excited about this could help. Think about it.

I' was a big Pliny the Younger fan until I had Stone's 'Enjoy-By' (Keg) Dogfishhead's 120min IPA (Keg) and Brash Brewery's 'the Bullocks' (Keg)
@pdubs92611 жыл бұрын
dogfishhead is not one of my favorit brewers. the owner is an ass and the beer is very very inconsistent.
@BradLasers10 жыл бұрын
***** I have to disagree with you about the owner, he's one of the most accommodating and patient owners I've met, not to mention he's really working hard to bring his beer to the masses (in response to market demand, might I add) instead of just sitting on his laurels. I agree about the inconsistency of the beer, but only during the vintages made in the first year of their new production facility. the 90 minute IPA was shit that year, and it made me sad.
@Coleburgess0910 жыл бұрын
***** fuck inconsistent. The beer is just shit man. I really really don't get everybody on their Dick. I have really tried to like their beer and was making excuses for it I was like "ah damn that 90 minute hasn't very hoppy at all maybe it was old" found a bottle that was bottled ELEVEN days before I found it. I got super stoked and bought a 4 pack and was so pissed. I think the same about their 120 and the 60. I've had some solid barrel aged stuff from them and their bomber series they do are half decent but nothing outstanding. I don't get it. I really really don't.
@Brand0nv1110 жыл бұрын
I gotta agree with Stone's "Enjoy-By" that beer has insane flavor
@benjerry644211 жыл бұрын
I don't get the excuse that they don't sell it in bottle as it goes off to quick, isn't the point of an IPA is that it keeps longer than traditional ales, jeez the English sent it by slow boat to India, surely it'd last by bottle in a truck from coast to coast.
@lanakias15 жыл бұрын
They want all the world drink theirs beers but the truth is, only in california you can get them if you are lucky.. So i wonder how they have such an expectetion?.. They say "Pliny the elder" is the best beer in the world but personal and many others in Europe dont have opinion and we cant have.. So we can't agree that this beer is the best.. When they decide to make more beer and send them in the rest of the world, then we can speak if it is the best or not.. And that goes and to other rare beers like "Westvleteren" ect..

I was informed by a Roman philosopher the appropriate pronunciation is should be 'plɪni'/ (rhymes with skinny) vs something that rhymes with pine... Who am I to know,, Just passing what I've been schooled on...
@BLR1GBattlemaster3 жыл бұрын
I've waited even longer several years ago in the rain. Waited probably close to 10 hours. And, what can I say? The beer was not good. We made several friends in line, and I think we all thought afterwards that the beer was really over rated. Tasted like flavored aspirin water. I prefer Elder to Younger, and over the years, don't like Elder much either -- or Blind Pig for that matter. IPA's, I think, have advanced beyond Vinnie's era of IPA's. If you're into the really filtered, really dry finishing style of West Coast IPA's, Russian River may be your thing. But, personally, I'm really into the juicy super fruity type of IPA's, and that's just not these beers.

As a European I thought everything in the U.S was done bigger, but how small are the American servings of beer!!! Jesus you had big men drinking from thimbles. Europeans would need to drink 15/20 of them to get drunk. If you want to drink real beers in real size mugs go to Oktoberfest.
@shotgunsteve9310 жыл бұрын
That's not a typical serving size. The glass is so small because they want a lot of people to try it, therefore they use a smaller glass.
@RustyIronloins10 жыл бұрын
15/20 = 0.75. Euro men only need 0.75 of those little testers to get drunk? Lightweights!
@ultramimo9 жыл бұрын
It is not about the size. It is about quality. I don't need a huge glass of a barrel aged dark ale to enjoy its flavor.
@robbassett1686 жыл бұрын
Fantasticmovietrailers - That Beer is over 10%ABV. A average beer drinking 200 lbs grown man would be on the floor after 7-8 of these “sissy” 10oz pints.

They dipped the tap into the beer EVERY TIME they poured it. You should never do this when pouring a beer. Any good bartender knows this!

Guilherme C. It creates a yeast buildup in the tap and can have an impact on the flavor of the beer.

All I have to say is HILL FARMSTEAD there is a reason they win at being the best brewery in the world. Pliny is good but no where near the hype these guys are claiming lol. There are tons of DIPA out there that are just flat out better.
