While I think I understand what you're saying, I personally disagree on the idea that Follin's work doesn't have melody. Even given the complexity of his tunes, I think he strikes a good balance between pattern and variety, as well as a good distribution of focus in all of the roles his instruments play.

I first heard Plok music from an arrangement found in the Mario Paint guide from the 90s. Just from that limited sound, I knew the game had a good soundtrack. You did a superb job representing music from Plok with this MIDI.

Hey so I tried making that song from the guide, I can't tell what it was. Do you remember the specific song that was in the guide?

After listening to this a lot I have to say... you made a great track sound even better. This is quite a feat. It sounds like a psychedelic journey to some far off surreal land.
@teckworks12 жыл бұрын
I did exactly that. The note-based sequencing was recorded using tonal compass +bars, and the percussion was recorded using the Interval pitch yarn. Then I just screened them over one another in Vegas. The only downside is that it makes the black background slightly brighter than it needs to be. But it does add a slight sense of depth to the video since they move at different speeds~

This is a *sick* OSV+ style arrangement (as I'm finding with all of your tracks!!). There's something off with the pacing of the playback though, like the clock source isn't consistent. I'm confident it's not your sequencing work. I tried playing MIDIs through Falcosoft's MIDI Player and encountered the exact same issue. IDK what you're using to render, but I've had excellent results with fb2k's MIDI player configured with XG-flavored "secret sauce." Of course, this video was published 11 years ago, so maybe you've already solved this. Side note: the Roland RAP-10 (as well as the standalone Sound Canvas) has this same type of issue, especially when a lot of polyphony is being used. Sound Canvas VA FTW if you're into that sort of thing. 😁

And look, I haven't been too nice-sounding about this but truth be told I really really like the guy; I think he's a brilliant musician. I've listened to his stuff before I can really feel how boundless and intense his imagination was. It's just not stuff I can whistle back to myself, you know? ;P

while I do respect preferences toward simplistic music (such as SMB or LoZ on the NES), I certainly wouldn't call follin a poor composer just because he tends to focus on complexity and pushing technical limits as for melodic stuff from him, try Silver Surfer, Solstice, Pictionary, (all 3 of those are just on the NES too) and the unreleased Time Trax theme on the genesis

Follin > Wise (I'm just sayin......)
@StarmanSuper0012 жыл бұрын
I'd always had a slightly scornful view of Follin as a peerless master of circumventing chip limitations but a poor composer...although this is a really lovely tune, and terrifically complex too. And speaking of Wise, this almost sounds like a DKC piece.

@StarmanSuper0012 жыл бұрын
Lots of filling in otherwise empty space with arpeggios, general lack of solid, driving melodies, just an ongoing flow of crazy notes and bass lines with some neat alternations and sound effects...but no tunes. I grew up on Mario and Zelda though so I'm a little spoiled in this regard.
@tatsujincorp4 жыл бұрын
😂
@StarmanSuper0012 жыл бұрын
I don't think 'complex' and technically advanced music is automatically poor...I think lack of a melody means you're not really composing anything. Also, make sure not to use the term "complex" lightly...literally much of the content of his pieces are plain chords extrapolated into dense riffs of notes. It takes an unusual level of musical intuition to be able to write a memorable theme, but not to create chords.
