In this Plok review / retrospective, I talk about Plok! The Exploding Man! Where he came from, his peak in the 90s and his downfall, and what he's up to these days. The poor lad just couldn't catch a break!
While Plok seemed to be the next big heavy hitter with some fantastic reviews critics and audiences alike, the timing of his release couldn't've been worse, with his game unfortunately getting outshined by Super Mario, Sonic The Hedgehog and yes...even Bubsy The Bobcat. Curse you Bubsy!! If only Plok could get a second chance on modern platforms, with a port, remake or even an entirely new game! There are so many things to love about this game, from it's amazing sense of humor (that's actually, y'know, funny!), it's banging soundtrack (seriously just listen to the Plok OST and your ears will thank you) (Plok Boss and Beach are GOATS) and addicting gameplay mechanics. All this coupled with some of the best control I've ever felt in a game, Plok definitely gives Mario and Sonic a run for their money in that department!
Plok is a 2D platformer released in 1993 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), created by Jon and Ste Pickford, developed by Software Creations and published by Tradewest / Nintendo / Activision. This unique game follows Plok, a hooded character and self proclaimed ruler of the Akrillic Island. After his precious flag goes missing, a wave of fleas infest the island spawned by the Flea Queen. Now, Plok immensely dislikes fleas, so he's not going to stand for this, so he takes it upon himself to rid Akrillic of these filthy critters, and you're the one who's gonna help him!
Unfortunately as his game was seen as a commercial failure, all future plans for ports and future sequels were unfortunately canceled.

Great video, I love Plok. Sadly as far as I remember John and Steve have the rights for the character but not for the game and they aren't sure what company have the rights for the game, maybe I'm misremembering things so don't take just my word but I think that it's a big problem and reason as to why they haven't tried to talk with Nintendo about putting the game on the Switch Snes emulator.

This game reminds me a lot of Dynamite Headdy and Rayman (which I believe that game started out on the SNES in the early 90’s as well). Though it is sad that titles like Dynamite Headdy and Plok got overshadowed by the sheer scale of platforming mascot over saturation.

Yes Rayman originally started out as a SNES game before moving onto the Atari Jaguar and PS1! I can definitely see the Dynamite Headdy comparison too, however I haven't played that myself yet! It's a real shame they both got lumped in with the likes of Bubsy and the rest considering how unique they are, however at least Dynamite Headdy is available to play on modern systems with the Mega Drive/Genesis collections!

I loved Plok as a kid, but thanks to lack of battery and password never made it to the end. The prospect of starting from level 1 over and over doesn't make me wanna try again nowadays either. With save states, sure! Lovely game and music!

I rented this back in the day and loved it. I was so confused that there was no follow up to this. Plok would rock on Smash Bros, especially if they used the Boss Theme and his costume changes. I do have a silly theory that Plok could be related to the PAC Man ghosts, if anyone is familiar with the original arcade cut scenes.

Fun fact: You can actualy damage enemies in Cowboy form with your toy pistol. Problem: You need to be a max 2 pixels away from bumping their hitbox for it The Pistol is a valid attack move, a shitty one, but one nonethenless

I used to rent this game a whole bunch as a kid, of course the cover drew me in, but I remember this being a lot of fun... And really hard. Probably the only reason I never bought it to begin with. I recently got the soundtrack recommended in my feed and I kid you not, I'm STUMPED at how hard it hits for such an old 16-bit game. I genuinely hope this game gets a remaster or a full on remake, either with the original OST untouched or with a quality composer on board.

If the game did ever get remade, I hope Tim would come out of retirement just to work on the tracks again. Plok just wouldn't be the same without it!

Yo! Great review, man! Seriously high quality content, here, thanks for the laughs. Glad to see Plok being vindicated so many years after the fact, hopefully the Pickford bros realize how much people actually enjoyed this game. It saved an entire summer for my cousins and I when I was stuck at my crazy religious aunt and uncles house; I brought my SNES and talked my aunt into picking it up out of a bargain bin. We all loved it, and would sometimes just let the title track play in the background and got a huge kick out of it. My uncle even poked his head into the room during the Akrillic theme and said he liked the music. My cousins and I traded the sticks when one of us died; we were never bored as this game kicked our asses mercilessly so we passed the sticks often lol. Anyways, great job again on the video.
