Y cant we use directly instead of convert character we can convert that directly as number I.e. to number(hire_date, 'yyyy') ... Is it possible??

to number(hire_date, 'yyyy') - it is not possible, directly we can't convert to number. to_number(to_char(hire_date, 'yyyy')) - this is possible.
