Going with the most logical thread, replacing broken lines with new pipe causes ruptures elsewhere in the system with water pipes. Gas lines probably aren't under as much pressure to justify fears of a domino effect

People storing highly combustible things in their houses garages and storage sheds. Like stockpiles of fireworks, fertilizers for bomb making, chemicals for cooking meth etc .. If it was a natural gas leak It seems like they could determine that pretty quickly.. But illegal or poorly stored volatile chemicals ,can take out the neighborhood . Add in the record breaking heat wave .. it gives contents under pressure .. a whole new meaning .
