HaHa, I get that all the time when responding to burst rads or leaking valves on sealed heating systems, “I’ve turned the water off and it’s stopped leaking” customer not realising that the system has just lost pressure and it’s nowt to do with them turning the stop tap off. They’ve been sitting for hours without being able to have a cup of tea or go for a dump for no reason.

Thank you very much for making this video, in an ideal world the system would have been designed properly from the beginning but it looks like they simply added on the annex and upped the pump size to overcome the totally undersized plumbing pipes. One thing I did notice was the return temperature of the underfloor heating, 50+ degrees c is a bit on the hot side so if a valve failed you'd end up with a 50+ degrees C floor! Should that not have had a thermostatic mixing valve on it and the radiator moved off the underfloor heating manifold?

I’m not a boiler engineer, but I am a designer by profession, and even I can see what a bum job this is that you have taken on. Love the banter, and keep up the good work. Me I’ve just fix our 18 year old Grant Oil boiler which popped a leak in the water jacket. I only want it to run for another winter, before we find a competent government certified boiler engineer who can fit a air source heat pump system.

You must have saved them a hell of a lot of money trying to push the system up trying to heat a few radiators, well done 👍 I must admit I like low temperature flow systems ideally 50°C & less if all underfloor for sure far less, I'm not a plumber by trade, although soldering is easy many years as a Aerospace Defence Hardware Test Qualification Verification Consultant been in Electronics industries including boiler analysers repair service & calibration, I must admit planning a system layout is prime importance before installing, that system running 22mm pipe up & down must have lost so much heat especially if it was never lagged, I do feel they will be having a party when their next gas bill is far lower, good video & yes I've purchased parts etc from you guys before great quick service 👍

I must admit although it can be a pain in the backside, getting a shoddy system to work properly is one of my favourite things in plumbing. The customer thinks you're a magician. It takes time and for you to do what you did, you and your dad must have been motoring. It takes time to figure someone elses work out, and you're even thinking about it in the days before you start the job.

Great vid. admittedly I have skipped a bit. What I couldn't get was if this has a heat store or a conventional hot water system, which would maybe indicate to why they decided to plumb it in such a way (rightly or worngly). Also for a house and heat load of that size, surely 28mm pipe flow and return from the boiler would have been more appropriate (for the original installation).?

James, have you checked the 4 drainage channels? (assuming it's a factory sunroof). 2 run to back wheel arch and 2 to front wheel arch via A pillar behind the trims. They get gunked up in the arches and water can't get away from the roof 👍

I think you should tell them if someone's done a bad job. Maybe in a diplomatic friendly way without slagging off unnecessarily. If it was me, I would want to know who did what to my house and would thank you for the advice. If nothing else it would teach me not to use them anymore and/or to get a second opinion in future. Also, I would want to know why it's not perfect after you worked on it. Without the knowledge that the foundation is flawed, I would be blaming you. You are helping no one by keeping this knowledge to yourself, but maybe that's just me. I guess some clients are willfully ignorant of such things and don't want to know. Guess you have to judge on a case by case basis.

Mum and Dad installed the all the heating and the plumbing on a renovation self build in the 70s (It only came witha Victorian pump and no mains drainage in rural Essex) so when she moved to a new build in the 90s she has always asked whichever plumber comes in about the long pipe runs and 'returns' on radiators. xD And she would agree with you James as everyone should care about what's gone on in their home. How else do you know what you are dealing with?

Great video and super workmanship, as always. Damn Robocals always leak. I have 9 of them in my loft (bungalow), cap on every one is now turned tight. Not a single isolating valve. Fortunately not a full drain down to replace them all but so annoying.

My pet hate was those crappy globe/ballofix type pump valves. They're stiff to turn off after sitting there for years, and you know the 'O' ring is going to be cattle trucked and leak when you open it again. They're usually installed in such a position that they're an absolute arse to swap. Much prefer the gate valve type like you used here, at worst they may leak from the packing gland and just need a slight pinch with an adjustable. Certainly agree with you about service valves, you can never fit too many. So much easier to turn a valve off to isolate a component than to drain down the entire system.

Good question. If unbalanced it will rob flow and heat. Thats why balancing is so important!

Nice job, probably would have done it a bit differently (personal style), not a fan of AAVs I prefer it if the air naturally vents to an open vent or radiator, no mechanical part to fail, self sufficient. With that said, sometimes your hands are tied. All in all good job, you just gained another subscriber

Well done, good solution and will documented. Does this system have two pumps that are not hydraulically separated? Closely spaced Tee may also helped allot cheaper than a hydraulic separator.

Thanks mate. Currently it's not hydraulically seperated. Often I do other minor tweaks afterwards so just waiting to see what happens. Can always add a non return valve if needed. Doing a video on the wiring later.

Seal that sunroof with SIKAFLEX mate, its permanently flexible so won't crack under being jiggled about by our fantastic roads. Top real world video, nice to see "the apprentice" out on the tools. 👍

Even though it’s probably not the sunroof to body seal that is leaking, those aftermarket sunroofs always leak and it’s normally the rubber seal losing flexibility against the glass, trying cleaning the edge of the glass and get some gummi flege (rubber rejuvenator) to put on the rubber seal
