Talk from Thay given in the Dharma Cloud Temple of Upper Hamlet, December 26th, 2010, on the theme of relationship and fidelity.
"We have said that sexual desire is not love, but our society is organized in such a way that sensual pleasure becomes the most important thing. They want to sell their products, and they make advertisements that water the seed of craving in you. They want you to consume in such a way that you have sensual pleasure. But sensual pleasure can destroy you. What we need is mutual understanding, trust, love, spiritual intimacy. But we don't have the opportunity to meet that kind of deep need in us.
"Many young people in our society want to have cosmetic surgery in order to meet with the standard of beauty. There are fashion magazines that say in order to succeed you have to look like this, use this product. That is why many young people suffer very much. They cannot accept their body, because people expect another kind of body, so they want to have surgery to change their body. When you do not accept your body as it is, you are not in your true home. Our body is like a flower. Everyone in humanity is like a flower. And each flower are different from other kinds of flowers. And if she can accept her body, she has a chance to see her body as home. If you cannot accept your body, you cannot be home for yourself.
If you cannot be home for yourself, how can you be home for others? So in psychological circles we have to tell the young people that they are already beautiful as they are. You have to accept yourself as you are. And when you practice building a home in yourself, you become more and more beautiful. You have peace, joy, and people will recognize the beauty of your flower."
"The monks and nuns, when they receive the bhikshu or bhikshuni precepts, they want to live a holy life. If you see that a monk is beautiful, it is because he has brought in the spiritual element into his life. Spirituality here means mindfulness, concentration, and insight. The Five Mindfulness Trainings are recommended for everyone, not only for monastics. Mindfulness is the kind of energy that can help you to go home to yourself, to the here and the now, so that you know what to do and what not to do in order to be home for yourself and for other people. The Five Mindfulness Trainings are a very concrete way of practicing mindfulness.
In the Buddhist tradition, holiness is made of mindfulness. Mindfulness, concentration, and insight make you holy. Holiness not only possible for the monastics, but also for the laypeople who practice the precepts. Holiness is not only possible with the practice of celibacy. There are those who live a conjugal life, but if they have the elements of mindfulness, concentration, and insight the have the element of holiness. A monk is like an astronaut, if you want to be an astronaut you should not be pregnant. It does not mean it is bad to be pregnant."
"We have to learn how to treat beauty. Sexual intimacy can be a beautiful thing, if there is mindfulness, concentration, and insight. Otherwise it will be destructive."
"To practice Buddhism as a monk is always easier than to practice as a layperson. In Vietnam we say, 'To practice as a monk is easiest; to practice as a layperson is much more difficult.' To practice not to have a sexual relationship is much easier than to maintain practice in a relationship, because in order to maintain mindfulness, concentration, and insight in a sexual relationship you need a lot of practice."
"Love is not a kind of prison. True love gives us a lot of space. Whatever you enjoy, the other person enjoys; whatever is your concern is also their concern."

How could someone possibly this wonderful, beautiful, wise, and generous? I wish I would have found Thay earlier in my life perhaps I could have found my true home. As hard as I try I can’t escape the darkness. I am so lonely and hopeless. I am scared of my thoughts. I just want the pain to go away. Thank you Thay for being so selfless and saving so many by showing them the path. I’ve never met you and yet you’re by far the most wonderful person I have ever known. Thanks for bringing some joy to this hungry ghost.

Glenn, you may enjoy meditating and practicing mindfulness with a sangha in Thay's tradition. I too have often wished I had found Thay earlier in my life, but I get a lot of nourishment from the sanghas I've practiced with, and it makes me feel more connected to his teachings. If you haven't already found one, there is a directory on MindfulnessBell.org, and there is a directory of online-only sanghas at Plumline.org.

Dylan, Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. I recently signed up for my first retreat from Plum village “Understanding our mind: Buddhist Psychology and Neuroscience which is an online retreat due to the pandemic later this month. I find Thay’s teachings on the mind and body so fascinating. Honestly I am desperate with the world today. Of course Thay won’t be attending but many of his continuations will be. I joined an online Sangha some time ago but for some strange reason I have not yet attended like I am not worthy. I am hoping the online retreat which includes dharma talks and sharing will break the ice for me. I can’t thank you enough for caring enough to reply and I can tell you too are a continuation of Thay. I bow with gratitude 🙏. A lotus for you. Please stay safe and healthy.

Precious teaching. Great truth. As a child forced to suffer sexual abuse I know what our teacher says is true. When suffering as an adult suicide has been strongly a desire for me. Old now I have been able, once retired, and not so busy, to understand the source of my suffering and some self destructive choices and spend time letting the heartaches, the deep pain in my soul surface so I can let it go and be healed. The result has been being able to see my success and appreciate indeed I am a valuable human being. Loved. Making myself my home now and living now in the Kingdom of God with forgiveness and understanding damaged and hurting people damage and hurt other people is part of the release of the pain. To anyone who reads this and experiencing the pain of a broken heart, of rejection of abusive relationships, take heart, as you walk through the pain a Light is waiting for you at the end of the tunnel of darkness you are feeling. Let yourself grieve - it’s gets better. All the positive forces in the universe are on your side!❤️You are a precious human being.

Collective energy in nyc in general is toxic not completely though. But when he mentioned that I thought of how I moved out of there. It’s not just the physical crime etc this collective energy is sometimes able to be sensed. We need more individuals who can implement healthy environments at work school and residential areas.

Talking about cosmetic surgery, I'm a trans-woman who transitioned in 1993. I've only had hormone therapy, no surgeries. I just function better, in every way, on estrogens, rather than testosterone. People thought that I was a sissy little boy, but I knew myself to be a little girl. My life has been so much better... but I never could feel okay with surgeries... not to say that I know what other people should do, that's just me. 💖🙏💜🙏🏼

Thank you Thay for your beautiful teaching! Not all of us are taught what is true love from the beginning. From the misunderstanding between true love and sexual desire or other sensual pleasures caused us and the other ones much suffering and destruction. In a modern world, we really need to mindfully choose what are good nutriments to our body and soul, along with practice of mindfulness, so we could build a home of true love inside ourselves for our beloved ones.

To chant Buddha is to plant "good roots and good fortune", and its merits and virtues are inconceivable. There are ten specific benefits of reciting "Amitabha Buddha" regularly, as follows: 1. Automatically realize every thought of your own heart, every cell of your body, and make yourself in a state of peace and happiness. 2. A single Buddha’s name can make us let go of all karmic conditions, recite single-mindedness, recite emptiness, and eliminate distracting thoughts. 3. Reciting "Amitabha Buddha" allows us to mention "contemplation", to connect with the highest wisdom of life in the universe; to communicate with the instinct of the self, and to bring out the potential of human beings. Fourth, reciting "Amitabha Buddha" allows us to communicate with the Buddha, that is, the mind is a Buddha, that is, the body is a Buddha; not confused, not delusional, not stupid; away from mistakes and inversions. 5. Reciting "Amitabha Buddha" can enable us to recite the goodness of our nature and achieve perfection; the pure and good nature of others can also be brought out. 6. Reciting "Amitabha Buddha" can eliminate evil and cut off bad thoughts, and it is also effective for others; it can stop others' evil thoughts and evil actions, and eliminate demons and evils. 7. Reciting "Amitabha Buddha" can eliminate omissions and suffering; comprehensive thinking and empathy; all six sense organs, self and others. Eight, reciting "Amitabha" can recite transcendence, recite light; recite immeasurable and boundless enlightenment and sobriety. 9. Reciting "Amitabha Buddha" can recall that the self-nature embraces all things in the universe, illuminates the entire space of the dharma world, and all the dharmas. 10. Reciting "Amitabha Buddha" can have full precepts, concentration, and wisdom; awakening, righteousness, and purity; all actions and aspirations are fulfilled, and merit is achieved. .

I find it very beautiful that "husband" or "wife" in vietnamese means "my home". The english word "husband" also has a link to "house". "hus" means "house". But it seems that "band" means "master". So it would be a role of domination. The etymology of "wife": either the word has its roots in "the one who moves a lot" or in "the one with the "headscarf" 8which is very surprising, especially in these times of the discussion about the Islamic headscarf ...), but no direct link to the "house".

This talk is so enlightening! I started to learn about Buddhism after my relationship with someone I loved ended. I was truly inspired by the teachings of letting go, everyone is an Island, mindfulness, etc., but I was confused about how Buddhism view romantic love. I always thought, “if love or sex is so great as people say, why don’t the monks enter into these relationships? So it must be bad for us.” But then I see Thay used this comparison of monks and astronauts in this video. It just enlightened me so much. Thay has so wisely guided me toward the right path of understanding Buddhism and love. I am forever grateful for your wisdom, kindness, love🙏🙏🙏

I sat through ...full time in complete silence ...listening to every word he said and connections he made ....he shares with such honesty, clarity and openness ...not sitting in a high pedestal of knowledge but with such senstiveness and kindness ..knowing how difficult living truly is. I loved it when Thāy says giving up as a monastic is far easier than living through sensory pleasures every day ! In today's time with war going on ..the way to report without watering fear anger or hatred is so important. Tuning in as much as tuning out ...transforming instead of transferring your past inherited collective energies was so simply shared . This talk is a masterpiece...must be heard by every educator and care giver.

“Let’s be an island unto yourself”, Thich Nhat Hahn says. My interpretation from what Thay says, When you are Understanding your own suffering, as a result you can heal your own physical and emotional pain. If I am understanding Thay’s example? Then you can teach others to do the same, and help transform the mental conditions of the people who live on this planet. Understanding is love. This is what Thay says, even though a rare unknown writer named Neely Fuller Junior says, love can’t exist in the presents of injustice. Love is peace. Peace is love. Justice is love, and love is justice. From Mr. Fuller’s perspective, you can’t live on a planet that has injustice occurring everywhere, and still have justice for some, and not for everyone else. That is not logical! As Mr. Fuller would say, you also can’t have peace, friendship, correctness, love without justice. Just like you can’t have love without understanding, as Thay would say. We live in a world where some people have said, and claimed you can have injustice and justice at the same time in the world we live today, doesn’t that sound like a contradiction? You can’t love someone and not understand them. People generally don’t understand themselves and each other. Then how can love and justice exist? One component of love is affection, maybe that is one aspect of what Thay is discussing. Thay will say something of what is to exist with an optimistic expectation that it will happen. Mr. Fuller says, love and justice are all one in the same. Injustice and justice cannot exist simultaneously. Only one can exist at any given time, this is what Mr. Neely Fuller Junior says. Thich Nhat Hahn and Neely Fuller Junior are from the greatest generation. Both of these people work to change the consciousness of all the people on this planet. Let us study their work! I initially struggled with the same feeling. Reflecting on it I came to view the person making those coughs in a compassionate manner. And I used the coughs as a reminder to be mindful, much like the bell. To be present doesn't mean it will all be nice and free of distraction. In my practice if I can tolerate and accept the noise and not lose my peace of mind...then I'm doing ok! Good luck. And yes I'd prefer there to be no coughing but it contains a lesson of acceptance.

If you do anything against your will... to be accepted, what is accepted is not you.. We have no choice, but to be ourselves if our wish is to really be accepted. Else, we take away the ability of another to accept us, by pretending to be something we are not. And we guarantee a bad outcome for ourselves. Even though it may feel like low risk taking, you accept rejection before it is decided.

I come to this as a habit ( a good habit of listening Master Thay would say ) and I hear teachings that serve me on this day and forward. I am a lonely man ( at near 53 looking at the longest celibacy since virginity ) but, I have to wait until I truly can love. I feel the master in me and I feel some peace.

Humble Empowerment to the core, that’s what he is able to give. Because he has so much of it himself. The love and joy he has, he translates those in us deeply. We are indebted to you, Thay, to be able to live in us.
