Go to Itaewon and shot at OKBT, the Korean lady who owns it is a plus size woman and she sells a lot of plus size clothing. That's where I used to buy all my clothes when I lived in Korea. Edit: just realized you showed there... it's nice to see they repaired their shop after the big fire in 2013. It was a nice store and I loved the owner when I was there. She always gave me the best deals on clothing.

lydia asantewaa I went into a Korean grocery store in the US and ppl were staring at me all crazy like... I was with my sis but I was wearing a bright colorful outfit(i wore a skirt down to my ankles)and you would have thought a celebrity arrived. 🙄 guys kept walking passed the isles giggling like school girls and workers peeking out of doorways... It got wired fast 😯 I guess I looked good(at least to me lol) well I should say when I wore that outfit most men all paused no matter what race... I even got an OMG screamed out by a teenage boy 🙃 I did steal attention of some guys from a bridal party that was at a park we was at 😆 their girls were not happy 😂 let me stop but sometimes you don't have to do much to turn heads.

I went to korea and shopped at dongdaemun. For pants/jeans at a department store, I'm a size 27 in america and that was the 2nd to largest size jeans in korea, and the length was too short. The shorts were super tiny, and the skirts were not meant for girls with a butt, i couldn't wear any of the bottoms The clothes especially dresses were made for the korean slim look and not the curvy look. I would ask the lady in korean if it would fit me, and she glanced at me and said "barely, but i think it will." Not even the large jackets would fit over my chest or my broad shoulders. I think the mens clothing were more my size lol. I can't wait to go back to korea. I just wished they had clothes for more sizes like in america. The underground subway venders was a very unique experience lol. Haggling was fun, but my friend who didn't speak korea was taken advantaged of. My korean isn't perfect, but it was good enough for them to give me the "discount" for koreans versus the "discount" for foreigners. One lady was like "item is 60$" to my friend, when the korean sign said "item was 30" lmao.

+Selena Rodriguez I wear a 1x in tops (depending on the company, maybe a 2x). Remember this is Western sizing. When it comes to Korea clothes, I may be looking at 5/6x. (it's pretty crazy). Again, I think that it is a hit or miss. Most likely you won't find really cute and fashionable clothes, mostly oversized tops. I would stick with tops that are stretchy because they have more of a give..

Thanks for this I was struggling here for a size 12 in Seoul. What about for big feet.
@Sakura28389 жыл бұрын
Hi Nat, thanks so much for this video! This is one of the topics I'm worried about, since I'm not part of the "straight" sizes already here in America. Let me just clarify this one thing, just to be sure: when you say plus size, do you mean larger than XL/14? I'm a bit larger than that, and so finding clothing that is already larger than what is the norm in America will make things even harder when I do go to South Korea. In terms of clothing - can you try on the clothing? I've heard of places not allowing that, since it's cheap clothing and worries about things stretching out, but for myself I really need to see if something fits on myself. Eyeballing or just guessing if something will fit doesn't sit well with me, especially with things like button ups or such. You also mentioned that the trend is oversize in South Korea right? Is this just common in South Korea, or is this something just current or a fad? I'm not going to South Korea for at least two years, so I just want to know if this is something that will still be common when I do go. I hope this doesn't offend you either, but this is just something I'm worried about. Have you experienced fatphobia or fat shaming while there? So far I have not seen much about this topic, other than foreigners generally talking about how people will talk about appearances, but not specificially on how plus size people are treated. Lastly, on a side note other than plus size, you mentioned that you should haggle. How do you haggle, were you able to do so okay even with the language barrier? Haggling sounds a bit intimidating, I have never done so before. Anyways, I wanna say Nat that I love your videos about your experiences in South Korea, both in and outside of teaching. They are so informative and helpful, thank you so much!
@_FabulousNat9 жыл бұрын
+Sakura2838 Hi! When I say plus size, yes, I mean pant size 12 and above. In OKBT (in Itaewon) I saw pant size going up to a size 20/22. Shopping for plus size in Korea is not going to be as easy as it is in the US, but it is possible. You just need to know where to shop.[I do want to note that this pertains to me living close to the Seoul area. I cannot speak for any other areas outside of Seoul] Usually you can't try on clothing, and if you can, it's usually a bootleg setup behind some string and a blanket (if you're comfortable with that). Usually you just have to eye clothing and hope that it works. I find that usually the body area of a shirt would fit, but the arms are ridiculously small. You just have to pray and hope for the best. I just tend to keep away from non-stretchy items that don't have any give. I'm not really sure if oversize a fad, I'm not too familiar with past style trends in Korea. But the oversize trend is one that is prevalent...there are many trends that are going on here...theres the hiphop style, 90s style, cutsy girly style, structured and mature girly style, minimalist style. Those are just some styles that I see the majority of people wearing. I havent experience anything negative in regards to my weight. People just tell me that Korean food is healthy, and its better to eat. I did have one guy hand me a dieting flier on the street...but I wasn't the only person. Honestly, don't be consumed with what you think people will think of you. 1) You are a foreigner so you can get away with a lot more things than natives..I don't think that Koreans in particular are going to go out of their way to shame you. If anything they'll do it out of concern for your health, not disgust, 2) learn to be comfortable in your own skin, despite what you see portrayed all around you (skinny is minny, light and bright skin is right, ect. ect. As for haggling, you can learn some basic Korean phrases like "How much". But honestly all I do is pick what I want (2 or 3 items) and ask how much. If I don't like the price, I suggest something low (lower than the actual price I am willing to pay). If they offer another price (still not what I want to pay), then I pretend I'm going to leave the store without the items. That is usually when they try to offer you a better deal :) And thank you so much for watching!

+TravelingNat Thank you so very much! Really sucks about not being able to try on clothing. I'm not sure, do you mean visibly a foreigner or will people be able to tell I'm a foreigner regardless? I'm Asian, so I don't think physically I would stand out too much, asides from my weight. I struggle with that, but thanks for your advice, I know that I have to learn to love myself the way I am. Hopefully I can haggle successfully! Again, thanks so much for your videos and for replying! I know I typed up a lot.

I'm not plus size, but I had it pretty bad there since my legs are a lot shorter compared to my waist. I'm a 36x29, and that was almost impossible to find.

+Korean Pathfinder I know, I'm in that weird middle area too...having larger hips and being short don't really mesh well. All the pants I purchase usually have to be hemmed or folded up.

+chiirox [For OKBT] Get off at the Itaewon train stop and come up exit 5 (I believe). You should be on the side of the street where Hamilton Hotel is. When you come out of the station, just keep walking straight down. OKBT is above a shoe store on your right hand side. I think the store on the 1st floor is Italian shoes. You have to go through that entrance turn right and walk up the stairs to OKBT! Hope this helped! Let me know if you are successful when you go there!

Loved this! I have a question that may seem weird, but I'm most likely going to study abroad at Sogang or Yonsei University during the next semester and I was wondering if you'd be up to meeting a subscriber? We can go shopping too! Lol How long will you be in Korea?

+Dijonase Mulligan Hi, you mentioned that you would be studying abroad in one of Korea's university. i am really curious how you are able to make that exchange. does your university have a collaboration with schools abroad or did you set it up yourself. are you currently in a program and how would it fit into your exchange. sorry for asking so much question, but am really curious
@1dmulligan9 жыл бұрын
Hi! My university does have exchange programs with schools abroad. So I will be studying at Sogang University, but I will be paying tuition at my university in the United States and only paying housing fees for Sogang. There are other programs as well, like USAC and CIEE, but you have to be enrolled in a university to participate in them. Sorry if this wasn't helpful for you. :(

Hey! I will be heading to South Korea soon, and i am coming from 30+'C summer to Winter and snow. I have no idea where to shop for warm plus sized clothes in South Korea. Do you have any tips for where to shop, or should I rather order online? (I will be in the Incheon area)
