Pluto in Astrology: Meaning and Significations Explained

An introduction to the meaning of the planet Pluto in astrology, and explaining what it means in a birth chart, with astrologers Richard Tarnas and Chris Brennan.
In astrology Pluto is generally associated with power, control, manipulation, intensity, the underworld, taboos, transformations, destruction and regeneration, death and rebirth, making big things small and small things big.
Richard is the author of the 2006 book Cosmos and Psyche: Intimations of a New World View, and he previously appeared on episode 84 of The Astrology Podcast in 2016 to talk about the book on its 10 year anniversary:

​@@gadvojkuvka9577A transit is movement of a said planet, in this case Pluto. Ascendant meaning the Rising sign; the sign on the horizon at the hour of one's birth. First house is just that, the 1st house of the chart. If someone says their Ascendant - it means their First House of their own chart. My ASC is Leo - for example. Hope that helps you.

Back in the 70's I had my chart done by this new astrologer, Stephen Arroyo in Davis Ca. A few years latter, transiting Pluto conjunct my natal Saturn. I had been teaching kids meditation and some people who wanted to discredit the facility accused me of being a witch. It resulted in me having my life investigated, but in the end I was exonerated and found to be a victim of McCarthyism. I had Arroyo's book Karma and Transformation then, it was my bible, it validated what this Pluto transit was.

My brother got killed in a car accident in 73. It sucked. In 75, I believe I gave birth to him, that he reincarnated through me. He was pretty much done after Viet nam. And I felt a need to help him, since he'd helped me survive as a kid. I think it's hardest for survivors of war. I try to work for peace in my own way. It's good to survive and live as long as possible, for me. It saves resources for the planet in the long run, and gives you more of a chance to make this your last life time. Hope I don't sound too pessimistic. Take care!!!

This magnificent video has had deep resonance for me. I was raised by grandparents who had been hidden away during the European Holocaust. They were young children when it began. I recognized the effect of Trump on a large number of our population. That was familiar to me as a warning we were coming into a very challenging time. Coming back to comment again & thank you guys for putting in so much time for this episode- around 1:24, Richard begins talking about the process of ego destruction- I could not put into real words what has been occurring in my own life regarding this, but I see it clearer after that small segment. It had to be described in a mythic way for it to truly translate to me on a deeper level of understanding. Especially right after listening to the section where he was mentioning someone going through a heavy Neptune transit and being tapped into the untouchable realms messaging as merely a vessel, but barely remembering it- I relate heavily to that and information these days seems to be only penetrate my mind on that ethereal, symbolic way. I also see directly how Uranus blows through, Neptune dissolves, and then Pluto comes in for the final kill. What a brilliant way to look at the process of ego death as I am experiencing it personally in this order and all at once. For reference I'm currently going thru these transits in the present moment: Saturn return, Uranus trine Uranus (and square saturn), Neptune trine ascendant, Pluto sextile Pluto, Pluto square Sun. I'm 29 and can't believe I'm alive. I wrote in my journal the other night that reality feels like the underworld - I don't remember writing that. I seem to be witnessing hell, walking right through it. Life has become extremely abstract and reality nearly completely estranged to me. Where people say reality I don't know what they mean anymore. I'm not so sure I ever have. Hahaha... uh, cheers.

Perfect timing for me. When I look back at all Pluto Saturn contact in my chart over the past 11 years, I notice that I have been hurt (life threateningly) by others. I will be embarking on the inconjunct in a few months and I got a huge warning today when someone threatened me. This podcast was up on my list when I returned home. I would have never made the connection between being hurt and the Pluto Saturn contact without this information. Pluto Saturn was your fourth segment. I took a 4 hour break after that part because I was so blown away. Thank you so much. I'm sure this information will play a HUGE role in saving my life as I can now make the necessary adjustments to my approach with others. I'll let you know if I survive the inconjunct. Thanks again. :-) PS, In each case, the themes surrounding the conflicts are heavily sexual, violent and power play oriented with threats of death. However, the rebirthing process is unlike anything I have ever experienced. It truly is like a phoenix rising from the ashes. The warning today, even though it was tough for me to witness, could be a lot worse in several months if I don't break this pattern. If these things are happening on this planet , imagine what is happening in other parts of the solar system, astrology isn’t just set up for the human, but certainly there to pay attention and to make a change. So nice that there are humans out there paying attention to some extent. Hoping that someday the enormous heart-shaped feature on Pluto will be incorporated into our relationship with this archetype in the same way that the physical aspects of the other planets each have qualities related to their astrological interpretations... for example: Mars the “red” planet and the associations that color holds in our collective - passion, anger, warrior, sacrifice etc. Or Uranus spinning on its axis totally unlike any other planet in our solar system. Saturn, the planet of boundaries and edges - with its lovely rings.... Neptune’s totally enveloping oceanic blue ....each planet has physical properties that resonate with how astrologers see these archetypes. It cannot be an accident that Pluto has revealed to humanity, through our own curiosity and mastery of technology that it has a HUGE heart. This must be the archetype saying something important to us as they speak to us thru the language of the physical planets. One more comment regarding how these celestial bodies get named.... was anyone else cringing with dismay when the “scientists” ( ignorant of the power a name can invoke ) decided to let Eris have a seat at the table knowing what havoc we had invited into our collective by doing so? Perhaps I am showing my age but I remember those discussions and my great sadness when the announcement was made.... what fools these mortals be.....

It’s pretty interesting you mention the heart on Pluto. I just read a comment on Reddit the other day about how someone believes that it is not Venus that represents love - or at least “true love” - but Pluto. While I’m not sure the degree of the truth of such a statement, I find it useful to gloss over the areas where such a statement may be wrong in order to find where it is right, to find what the statement’s sentiment is.

I have been negotiating Pluto conjunctions to a stellium of 5 planets , some of which are conjunct, since Pluto arrived in Capricorn. Currently exact with my Mars exact conjunction with Moon. I have found myself riveted and transfixed by this exceptional podcast today. Just prior to waking up, to hear it , I emerged from a dream where my old iPad was laying face down with i.d. engraved on its silver surface. Pluto occupies my 12th house and is usually part of my education through graphic details , such as this. I cannot describe the amount of suffering I have encountered in the last couple of years through this emerging transit with Pluto..So I have to thank you both for being a pivotal part in enabling me to glimpse my journey to my reconstruction ! So many points raised here, have helped to demystify and give representation to the immense struggles and sacrifices I am encountering. A very fruitful refreshment lodging, on my journey. Astrology as a gift from the cosmos had me openly crying as I looked out my window at the snow blizzard and spotted an occasional sparrow struggling to fly a few yards. Yes, I agree astrologer, Dane Rhudyar was the biggest influence for 1940-60's generations and the transcendental transpersonal astrology opening up the archetypal intuitive spiritual side.of astrology. I am appreciative of all you share. This is so helpful. I am working through things before my second Saturn return that I did not learn during the first Saturn return. I have some intense placements with my Mars, Pluto and Uranus in my 4th house in Virgo. I always thought family is so important and would defend my family. However, I realize I hid or missed some things that are not positive and I do not need to be accepted or involved with certain family members anymore. I kept trying to get approval from one influential well known parent in their field of work but that parent was never open to me. I realize it is okay to not have approval. It is the parents own childhood wounds that I accidentally triggered but it is not my problem to continue to take on. I don’t need acceptance and am finding my worth now without that parents approval. I have Saturn and Chiron in the 10th house of Pisces. Those placements and some others have been intense and difficult. I have to walk away to be able to live life to its fullest . The parent and siblings that actually think they are God, I do not have to be around or accept anymore. Realizing I have been the scapegoat or doormat in my family is not acceptable and no child should ever have to go through that experience ever. I don’t understand why group dynamics end up that way but should not in regards to any child at all. Parents should be required to go through parent training before they have their own children. They have no idea how much influence they have on their own children. I am taking responsibility for my own faults not taking others faults as well. I have my own issues as well but working through my mistakes but don’t need approval from anyone but myself and God.

Great podcast on pluto, to say the least. As Scorpio, with pluto in Leo, in 7th H, conjunct S node and 8th house cusp, have been life long student/experiencer of metaphysics/ spirituality, and abuse survivor. Am finally healing, growing, and surviving exponentially, and I've always thought of pluto as ruler of Scorpio, do not relate to Mars as a ruling planet at all. Not that it's bad, but do not relate to war In a physical way or need for war, even though I finally figured out, I survived things like being strangled to death, and having a baby cesarean without anesthesia, to mars on asc in Cap. I'm into conservation and love preventative medicine. Thank you for this mind expanding podcast! It is "over the moon." You guys really know your stuff! And this is a study that can help mankind to find itself, and there for it's sanity. Hopefully, before its too late. Of course there's wars and rumors of wars. We've always had wars, probably since humans invented tools, and now, with the media, we will always hear about them. God bless and keep you in the light!

Awesome show! Not all the way through yet. The saturn/Pluto conjunction also brought up a lot of fear of death and overreach of governments. When I looked at the astrology before 2020 I saw intensity with government but could not have predicted the virus. I’d love to hear more about that. Also as we continue with the Pluto return and Saturn squaring Uranus it seems clear that it’s not just about the pandemic.
