Indian prime minister Narendra Modi has accused the Congress party of "callously giving away" the island of Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka. The tiny island was claimed by both countries from 1921 to the 1970s. In 1974, a Congress government under prime minister Indira Gandhi gave up its claim and ceded the island to Sri Lanka. The deal has been rejected by successive Tamil Nadu governments, including the current one led by the DMK. But prime minister Modi's party has blamed both the Congress and DMK of ignoring this issue. The Congress has questioned the timing of this controversy, saying the prime minister is desperate ahead of general elections. Why did India give up this island in 1974? My point is particularly the Chicken neck area near Siliguri is very narrow stretch of width 20km. It's very close to the border of Nepal, China. My fear is, any anti national fellow like shargil Islam during Anti India agitations called to block the chicken neck area so as to cut off the north east India with other parts of the country. In Tamilnadu, everyone knows the story of katchatheevu. Neither Central Governments either BJP and Congress for the 10 years each disnot care about katchatheevu.They call tamil fiaherman not even Indian fisherman. Jayalalithaa in 2008 had lodged a case against the transfer of land to Srilanka in the Supreme Court of India. The Tamilnadu government impleded itself in 2011 after ADMK government came into power. When Bheruvari was transfered to East Pakistan (Bangladesh) it was quashed by SC quoting that the consent from the both the houses of Parliament was not obtained. On this basis, katchatheevu transfer will also be invalid. Case is pending in SC. BJP is trying to get votes, pathetically tamilnadu people are aware of this cheap politics. 10 years they were sleeping is it?
