I can really imagine the two extremes being the only option. I did a shared cockpit night flight once and the other guy turned up all the lights in the A320 right away and I just hated it.

So what do you do if the captain and FO want opposite light settings? Do you compromise or does the captain always win?

I’ve heard that they leave them on. Pilots want their plane to be as visible as possible to other aircraft.
