I love how old this video is, because Thai music has changed some since. Like these days, most cover the membrane hole on the Khlui with tape instead of a membrane; that's if the flute even has a hole for a membrane anymore

If I guessed correctly, "pin nam tao" got its name from the turtle-shaped part of the instrument. Hence its name in English would be directly translated to "Water Turtle Lyre".

Sorry to say, but Nam tao(น้ำเต้า) is mean "Bottle gourd". Because we use the part of bottle gourd to make this instrument. So "Gourd lrye" is more accurate translate name.

@@faithite It's all right ma'am. Your translate isn't that wrong. We just pronounce "Tao(เต้า)" in different tone from "Tao(เต่า)" [ordinary problem of tonal languages].
