Jonsi from sigur ros is the master at this from his more melancholic through the violence textures in heavier/harder sounds.

I believe I read that he uses a cello bow, specifically. He also instructs his guitar tech to not remove the rosin residue from his guitar body- so basically it just gets more and more gunked up.

Just some advice from a violinist: theres no need to scratch your rosin to apply to the bow. Your first rosin application for the bow may take longer if it's a cheaper rosin, but better/good rosin will rosin perfectly well if you do not scratch it! 😁

Don't forget to clean the strings and top of the guitar after using a bow. Otherwise, the rosin will cake on and be hard to remove.

So cool. When I tried this, I got no sound at all. The only thing I achieved was to make the guitar unpleasantly sticky from all the rosin. It's such a cool sound though I am going to have to give this another go. Thanks for the lesson :o)
@LeighFugeGuitar4 жыл бұрын
Hey Walter, I'll be honest, I had the same problem. I'd never actually tried it myself until I got asked to make the lesson. I found that I had to try a few times to get the rosin to take to the bow correctly, once I'd gotten that part right, the rest of it sorta fell into place. The rosin was the hardest part to work out!! I found setting the bow hairs fairly tight helped a little too. Thanks for checking it out! Glad you enjoyed!

I bought a violin bow a few months ago for playing on my 6 string guitars and 4 string bass. I don't remember you mentioning adjusting the tension of the violin bow properly ... possibly as important as the rosin. I think the bow will work well with a good volume pedal too.

Hey Josh, It used to be Transparent Blue when I first got it back in 2003! It's been on tour quite a bit so over the years the colour has faded a lot! You can kinda see the original colour when the pickguard used to be. It used to be a very bright transparent blue haha

Hey Giulio, I've owned this guitar since 2003 and it's been on tour a hell of a lot so over the years it's just gotten beaten, battered and scratched and overtime the gloss just wore off. The gloss on this isn't actually as thick as some of the poly coats on modern Epiphones. I've heard of a lot of people getting good results taking the shine off with steel wool, but I haven't tried it on a finish myself so I can't comment!

BTW, Is there someone who makes bridges, or perhaps just custom saddles for a Tune'o Matic bridge so we can get a profile that makes playing with the bow easier for other strings just as well other than the high and low Es? I am a seasoned player, and TBH, it doesn't takes much experience to notice that with a standard ToM bridge one cannot reach all the strings, so perhaps there is a market for people who make custom saddles, custom bridges, tbh, the ToM bridges are great, they're simple, but, it has its limitations.
