It can be a throwaway line for fans to call for a change of manager but do we ever consider the full costs of doing that, in terms of both direct and opportunity costs? Even in simple terms, the significance of costs involved in the full process of making a managerial change become clearer. First, you’ve got to pay off the current manger and often his backroom staff go too. Then, it costs to appoint a new manager and bring in his backroom staff too. Then, the new man inevitably wants to clear out some players he doesn’t fancy. Then, you’ve got to bring in a bunch of ‘his signings’ to shape a squad. In no time, you’re 2 / 3 years down the line and several million pound down the chute. Worst of all, often, you’re in a very similar position to before you started. Ironically, by that time, the same fans calling for the head of the previous manager are now doing the same for the replacement. All along, all that money, time, and focus spent on managerial change, could have been invested in building up other areas of the club from the youth setup, training facilities and backroom resources, to the commercial department and stadium etc. Wouldn’t it be more productive to see power brokers at football clubs show more commitment to seeing their managerial appointments through for the duration? Instead, executives often seem keener to placate the fans who endlessly call for a change of manager. Those same fans are on a 2 - 3 year loop, calling for managerial change, regardless of who’s at the helm. Surely, sacking of the manager ultimately is an admission by executives they made the wrong appointment in the first instance.

Hope we continue to play that style of possession football when the serious stuff begins in the league. Long ball doesn't cut the mustard anymore.

@olliem40 I'm not sure that I agree that the level of opposition should dictate we resort to long ball footie. In todays game, if you're giving up any more than say 55% possession regularly, it's only a matter of time before you run out of steam and start conceding in those games where you're chasing the ball around. Taking your point about standard of opponent, an FLW article says we've got the 15th largest wage bill in the Champs at £8.6m. Obviously that doesn't put us at the top end of player values, but it's not bottom end either. Our players should be capable of retaining the ball to a level that we're not resorting to playing 'backs to the wall' football every weekend.

@olliem40 agreed that the key point is that we need an identifiable style of play. Saying that, Coventry had a dinstict style, playing good football, with one of the smallest budgets in the division last season. So, it's certainly possible to play your own game regardless of relative size of club or budget. That depends on tactics, formation and coaching for sure. Having been a North End fan for almost 4 decades, I do realise that kind of thinking is a stretch for many of us North End fans to get our head's around though. Due to messages from people at the club over the years, there's a deeply ingrained small club mentality in the fanbase that won't be easy to shift if they do want to progress the style of play next season.

@olliem40 Is it too simple to boil it down to individuals though? Undoubtadely there's a fixation on changing the manager in British football culture but success is probably built from a combination of forces moving together from board and manager, to players, through backroom staff and even fans. Personally I wasn't a fan of the appointment but stability is massively underrated in football. If most clubs are switching managers constantly, as they do today, there's likely a competitive edge to be gained by building over the medium term. As it seems to take 2 - 3 years for a style, system and squad to be shaped, are we really saying that we're prepared to wait until 27/28 to give it a go with another manager. We've only just got to the stage where this manager's system should be in full swing and we're clamouring for another sacking.

@olliem40 17 North End managers have been appointed in the past 20 years. Why do we believe the next one will do any better? It's just an endless merry go round that never gets us anywhere. It requires a holistic approach building up the club from top to bottom over a sustained period.

@olliem40 We (football fans) always seem to boil complex topics down to an individual. We're making uninformed judgements of personal abilities, character and traits. As if the success of an organisation, operating in a highly competitive market like the football league, comes down to a single person. Although the Hemming's officially took control in 2010, Mr Trevor Hemmings was a power broker as a director since the 70's. A couple of years does not arbitrarily constitute 'seeing a project through' in any other business. Football isn't like any other business granted, but not in any good ways. Besides, sacking of a manager is a tacit admission by executives that they made the wrong decision in the first instance. Scouting and recruitment certainly has returned more value on the positive side of the balance sheet since we returned to football people pulling the strings rather than an administrator taking sole charge of it. That's probably an astute point you made.
