All of the elastic or only the waist elastic? Thanks for the hint! :) I didn't realize either.
@Bobs1132 жыл бұрын
@@tanya9nithreus Generally all elastic. Just be sure you use narrower elastic around the legs and don’t stretch it as much. You don’t want it cutting into you. I would recommend making a practice pair (or two) to get the fit correct.
@carolyns992 жыл бұрын
@@tanya9nithreus Yes, all. The stitching doesn't stretch so the elastic must be extended as you sew it on otherwise it is useless. You can measure around your waist and legs with a piece of elastic and stretch it to a comfortable fit to see how much you will need. You may find it easier to sew the elastic into a loop then stretch and pin it into place along the hem. Then you will know that as you sew you cannot stretch it too much or too little. This lady is obviously a professional who can do it all by eye and without pinning but if you are learning it is better to have too many pins than too few. As Bobs113 says, you should consider your first efforts to be practice. Better still, use some scrap material and practice stretching and sewing elastic until you understand how it works. Good luck.

I've been making my own underwear for years with nylon tricot and lingerie elastic. The elastic she used is called "picot edge" elastic. That's because of the little scallop along one side. Tricot fabric has its greatest stretch on the crosswise knit for going around the body. Not as much, if at all, on the lengthwise knit because you want stability so it won't droop. Four-way stretch fabric fits tighter, but is more expensive and often comes with spandex in the fibers. You can also use a plain, soft cotton two-way stretch knit, which is what hers looks like in the video. Great use of a plastic bag to make the pattern. Kwik Sew and Stretch & Sew both have underwear patterns. No affiliation with either, just have used their patterns for years and years.
@elizabethburns88932 жыл бұрын
Hi Kathie, since you are knowledgeable, I thought I'd try asking you this question (I'm a relatively new sewer). When she sews the elastic onto the fabric, it looks like she's stretching it a little bit. Is that correct? How much should it be stretched as I sew it? Thanks so much.
@kathiethompson67192 жыл бұрын
@@elizabethburns8893 Hello...I use a Stretch & Sew pattern, but the idea is the same for any pattern when sewing elastic to an opening. Divide the opening into quarters or thirds. I don't sew the elastic on until I sew the side seam first. Don't think it divides at the side seam. The back of the leg opening has more fabric in it to cup around the bottom. Then divide the length of elastic the same way. Pin it to the tricot at the same points. The elastic can then be stretched to be sewn on between the pins. The elastic needs to be shorter in length than the opening so it will be snug to the skin when worn. The elastic does need to be stretched when sewing. I use a narrow zig zag stitch for this. Don't sew over pins because it can get your machine timing out of whack. The bobbin mechanism and the needle with thread won't meet at the right time to make the stitch. Sewing is not difficult when you learn the construction tips. Good luck!

It's the way I used to figure out how to sew things. The bought patterns used to mess me up. Also, wherever possible, I learnt to sew sleeves on when the pattern was flat. Rather than trying to sew the sleeves on after the side seams had been done already. (Sew shoulder seams first; lay cut out front and back flat, then fix the shoulder centre of the sleeve to the laid out fabric; right sides together; a gentle curve rather than a tight curve) Made it so much easier and probably how they do it in factories anyway.

Could you really? With the cost of fabric I find this hard to believe. Not to mention that even if you recycle fabric, most other clothes or household fabrics are not the same kind of fabric out of which panties are made. The only way I can see making your own underwear beating the cost of what you can buy in a store is if you made your own high end lingerie. Then you might gain an advantage . I don’t think a home sewer is going to beat the margins of mass produced underwear. I think you could make lingerie for less than Cadolle, La Perla, Coco de Mer, or Carine Gilson charge but only because a hobby sewer does not charge themselves for their own labor.

This looks great, just one question: shouldn't you have added a seam allowance to your pattern? The constructed garment you took the pattern from was probably had a half inch seam allowance which is what allowed it to be its finished size

Wondering if you could instead add extra on each part of the pattern (legs/waist) and make a tube or casing, and thread in elastic that way? I'm thinking the earliest knickers/underpants had ribbons threaded through like this and tied at the sides of the legs, and waist? That way you get the elasticity of elastic without contact?

I love the idea of using clear bags, very nice! However, there are issues with the construction that a newer sewist might not catch. Notes: 1) you added seam allowance for the hip seams, but none for the waist or leg openings, then you added what looks like 3/8" elastic. Thus, the panties you make will have larger leg-holes and a lower waistband than the exemplar. 2) It's far better to zig-zag the gusset. A shallow zig-zag (like 2 width 2.5 stitch length) is almost unnoticeable if you use coordinating thread. 3) Holy cow, don't straight stitch the elastic! The first time you put on those panties, you'll hear threads snapping! Yes, that's just the baste stitch on a first pass, but you don't show a step removing the baste, so I assume you left it in.

what stitch are you using for the straight stitches? i feel like a regular one would not be stretchy enough, the threads would break right away. is it an elastic (two steps forward, one step back) stitch? or is there a secret to it?
@rianchk2 жыл бұрын
Вроде зигзаг
@c.powell84722 жыл бұрын
it's a regular stitch. It will hold. She's pulling the red elastic a little bit while sewing it on... this creates the scrunchy effect of the material gathering. Does that make sense?
@iwp_paiv2 жыл бұрын
@@c.powell8472 for me it wouldn't hold - the main fabric itself is also stretchy, so you need a seam that would stretch along with it. a straight stitch is barely any more stretchy than the thread itself - it's just two straight lines of thread with barely any give. whenever i have sewn knit fabric in the past that way, the tread just broke when i pulled on the finished product. i am used to using the elastic stitch on my machine instead, but it looks a little different than this, so i seriously wonder what the secret here is. i suppose a very small stitch lenght combined with very small tension could make the threads loop on each other a little more leaving some more give, but the way she does it makes it look wayyy to easy compared to my previous experiences. unless this is some special thread :D
