The 10,000-20,000 hours concept is frightening to many beginners because they mistakenly believe it means that they'll be BAD at the task for years. In reality, you can become DECENT at a task in a very short amount of time, you can become GOOD in a reasonable amount of time, but MASTERY takes a very long time to achieve. This is an important clarification because many people just want to become decent or good at something, but hear the 10,000 hour rule and decide that it's too much, so they never start. (inspired by Tim Ferris, The 4-Hour Chef)

It's only scary if you are not prepared to put in the work. it's about conviction. "I am determined to do it" "this is all i think about" "I cant see myself doing anything else"

Chris Loper this is misleading... you have to make a lots of repetitions BUT they have to be with the perfect form until you get them into your muscle memory and they become second nature, if you build your learning on thismprinciple you will get there probably faster or at least if you need 10,000 hours those hours will be better spent... I say this because a beginer might focus on puting hours while not using proper form and the result would be a lot of wasted time

SupercalifragilisticIbesuchadopeguru Brian Johnson demonstrates mastery in his personal/professional life! Philosopher's Notes has enriched my life, beyond words! Guru Johnson takes care of his spirit, brain, body, and family, while demonstrating service, persistence, discipline, compassion, and diligence. Please forgive me for being repetitive; yet, I will never cease to attempt to EXPRESS AND DEMONSTRATE my gratitude, to you, Alexandria, Emerson, and your staff, for providing such a great service.

10,000 hours is spouted by people who have NEVER read Ericsson's original work on this. First of all, it is MINIMUM c. 10 000 of sustained, deliberate and fully engaged activity (with reflection as well). Not just mucking about. Also, You can't do that 10 hours 365 days a year and expect the same results as with someone who does 5 days a week (2 full rest/integration days), 6 hours (deliberate!) a day for c. 48 weeks a year. So, even 10,000 hours takes c. 7 years if you really want to have the hours count, other than just being ticked in the calender. Further, the 10 000 min mark is a general, average mark at which expertise starts to really come about. It isn't formed, it doesn't make one world-class, best or guarantee fluid expertise (cf. Bereiter & Scardamalia on fluid vs crystallized expertise). Therefor, I think Greene's rough rule of thumb of 20,000 hours is a much closer ballpark figure for those who mechanistically think about these issues through hours (instead of years, deliberate effort, reflection, integration and master-apprentice relationships). Again, great summary. Thank you!

+Brian Johnson But at some point you're gonna reach the everest, then what? ;) btw I just completed 'Selected Writings of Emerson' today. Took me more than two months to read more than usual for after every essay and journal I needed to take a break before I could move to the next topic which were alot to take in emotionally. What was really astnounishing for me thoigh was how many of the topics in the book were still relevant to this day and age and could really give a boost to anyone who want's to learn more about them. Also I it was very easy for me to relate to his passion and deep profoundness to nature for I'm studying Landscape architecture :)

10.000 is about 3 years (for 10h per day). I know many people who have worked for that and much longer and still are unhappy!
@HeroicBrian9 жыл бұрын
+Mishel Fayad Happiness and Mastery are two related but separate things. And no one can deliberately practice for 10 hours per day. Work, sure. But those aren't the hours we're talking about in this context! Optimize is now free! Sign up/tell your friends! www.optimize.me

Hehe you got a point there on deliberate practice! I guess it depends on the person's determination and vision!
@HeroicBrian9 жыл бұрын
@114941293474565261543 Well, 10 hours a day of deliberate practice *any* day is nearly impossible and absolutely impossible ever day! It's incredibly taxing to be THAT focused at your edge and you need recovery. It takes 10 years to put in the 10,000 hours of true practice with rare exceptions at the 9ish year mark!
