Thanks for another great book review. About your comments on turning into the average of the 5 people we hang around with most - i've heard this a lot but your the first person to explain how meditating, journalling, reading the right books etc can be part of this. This is just what I need to hear, so thank you so much!

Fascinating to see the different viewpoints expressed here. Especially the contrast between Brian's intention in presenting his 'Philispher's Notes' on ideas that resonate with him and are offered in case they may be of use to viewers/ readers - and the scientifc scrutiny some others expect. May I suggest a time-honored scientfic method for assesing the potential value of any particual idea presented? Experiement with an open mind in your own life, and observe the results. Enjoy!

@rickballance. Just as Brian has said, he only profile the books that resonate with his spirit. But instead of criticizing Brian, why don't you start to profile your own books that resonate with your spirit too. What I love Brian for is the idea of more wisdom in less time bewcausew it enables me choose from his profile books those ones that resonate With my spirit and left others that I don't feel connected with. Well done Brian and keep up the good work

I'm not necessarily referring to just this video specifically, I am quite ready to believe that the serotonin part is true if there's good data to support it... Anyway I find your basic concept of reviewing/summarizing books down into their main points quite lovely. You should just be much more picky about what constitutes a good book and good, practical advice.

I'm sure you'd agree that being skeptic isn't the same as being cynic or unhappy. Think Daniel Dennett or Montaigne. What I meant to say is that being skeptic is an integral part of what being a philosopher is all about - being able to see and expose faulty logic and conclusions. Of which there are plenty in many of the books your review. Not every book you got is the pinnacle of awesomeness and some are quite shitty actually - plz say so. No hard feelings though I like your attitude actually.

No offence but how would I or anyone be able to take you serious if you just review every book in the uncritical, positive manner you do now? Be more skeptic about the things written in those books or else you simply don't deserve to be considered a philosopher. Half of the books you summarize have some whacky esoteric spin to them that is absolutely bogus. And instead of calling them out on it like an actual skeptic or philosopher would you are just fine with those authors writing anything.

Almost all authors you present don't have any serious credentials whatsoever and what most of them they write is based on purely anecdotal "evidence" and "thinking". Not actual evidence or scientific study. I agree that there are occasional gold nuggets of insight hidden in "ancient wisdom" or esoteric texts but the other 90% are batshit and it would be nice if you acknowledged that. Please do me and your viewers a favor and turn up on the "science" knob while muting the superstition channel.
