Been hunting winthrop for 40 years and i know exactly where you guys were. 2016 was a great year due to fires further east, but since then it's been absolute shit. Still go every year (leaving tomorrow) as it's a gorgeous area. Don't forget to visit 3 fingers jack on town for a stiff one.

There hunting near Winthrop/Twisp Washington. In higher mountain range which has lots of open terrain and foliage to feed the deer year round. It harvests some of the largest Mule deer population in the Country. Some of the biggest record Muleys have been listed as come from this region or area. Your best bet is to pack in several miles. Past the end of a State forest service road just make sure you let the Ranget station know ahead of time for your own safety. Enjoy

Sleeper? lol mule deer in this state is terribly managed! the most coveted draw tags in this state rival other western states OTC tags.

Sir Cahoona it’s a north central cascade tag. We look at WA as a bit of a sleeper state as well. We do not have the same opportunities as other states but for those who work hard there are still ample opportunities here!

@@huntnnw You should see the buck Brady Palmer took in a late hunt. I've seen some other toads taken. Not sure how you would manage mulies differently. Limited draw? Oregon does that. Comparing Washington to Idaho, Montana, Colorado, Wyoming, or Utah isn't really fair, as those states have far more muley habitat , less hunters, and larger herds. How exactly would you improve things?

S Murphy it’s not necessarily the management it is we have close to 8 million people in Washington compared to Idaho 1 million . I think that would be difficult for any management. Just a thought?

It's Winthrop WA. Chewach drainage. Its over-run with coasties during hunting season. If you like hunting pumpkin patches, you'd be in heaven.

I am moving to Vancouver, WA in July of next year for the navy. How hard is it to get an elk or deer tag OTC? I have never hunted a western state before and would like to.

No restrictions on getting tags. For deer you must choose a weapon when you buy the tag. Archery, muzzleloader, or modern. For elk, you must choose your type of weapon, but also east side or west side of the state. The hunt here is a permit draw, and likely took 12 to 15 points accumulated at 1 per year. To put in for permit draws, you must buy your licence before the application deadline, usually around end of April or early May, then purchase an application for each type of permit you seek. You get a point for any unsuccessful draw. You can also "ghost" points, selecting that category automatically gets you a point, but ensures you won't get drawn that year...it is like "buying" a point.

Only during general modern deer and elk seasons do you need to wear orange
