@@AkitosAncitis Fun science fact. The beats do emerge, as this is due to happen to all coupled oscillators. Since they are all sat on the same furniture, they will influence each other's frequency and phase until at least some groups become in sync.

The slower ones take longer to finish (assuming they are wound evenly). They should cushion them to prevent vibrations coupling, which could cause unwanted synchronization. Someone should have sabotaged it by running 107 metronomes, to see whether György Ligeti would notice the alteration.

This, to me, is the most brilliant idea ever. I've checked this performance out countless times to just impress my musician friends, but now that I've been more versed in it's purpose, holy shit....This literally is the most hypnotic and apocolyptic composition ever made. You hear a cacophony of clicks going on for a few minutes, before you start to slowly realize your time is running out. I think if a person was to ever desire to add insult to injury to a death row patient, you'd have them hooked up to headphones and cue the electric to close the circuit right at the same time of the final metronome click!

@@dcar6530 So I noticed a few things, like how they all have different tempo settings, yet one of them (at 2:21 - middle row - right unit) runs down "first." Then it comes to mind that those with a faster tempo may "run down" sooner, and drop out. Then also comes to mind the idea that those of a similar tempo will "last about the same duration" (while the faster tempos run down sooner) then also start setting up a "resonance echo" of sorts, such that the air vibrations will tend to aid the remaining units in achieving synchronization.
