Plus, most of the time there is no twist or they don't make such a big deal out of the twist, so It's not like the one mistake they made with Frozen (which was already a bad movie) can give anyone a good place to judge the company from. Yes!! He’s essentially the inexperienced little brother of the group, which is why Tigress tells him to stay at the jail when he clearly isn’t ready for this and doesn’t seem willing to work with the team. And when it turns out this is a very personal enemy for him, it’s even more important he stays as getting involved could be a detriment to his and everyone’s safety. And she’s ultimately right, since Po’s desperation for answers is what leads Shen to successfully catch him off guard and shoot him with the cannon.

One of the best animated movies of all time EDIT: Tai Lung was a physical opponent but Shen was a mental one, that's what makes him great just in a different way. Also not even close to all of the Pandas survived, since Shen would have had to see a lot of bodies to come to the conclusion that he killed them all (which is what he thought until he found out about Po)

People came to the translation that Shen defeated himself, but there's a difference between defeat and death. Po defeated shen by destroying his weapons, dismantling all that he had worked to accomplish where he stood alone. He was defeated by Po. Then, in his refusal to accept his defeat, he ended himself.

I can see why you guys are a little annoyed by how Po is kind of portrayed as “weak.” But I think it’s important to note that he has different strengths than the rest of the Five, and that a lot of the time he’s played up for laughs. When he’s taking things seriously (or at least as serious as Po can be) he’s incredible. Also, a personal theory of mine is that Po has a very specific mindset he needs to be in to succeed. You can see it in this movie and the next one, even in the previous one. When he’s “in the zone” and content, he outstrips them all. But if he’s emotionally unbalanced (like he is nearly the ENTIRETY of this film) he struggles to focus on his training and fighting in general. It’s how he goes from basically stomping Tai Lung in the first movie, to losing to Tigress in this one. I’d also point out that from what we see of the Tigress vs Po fight, he doesn’t directly attack her and instead tries just to get past her, so he’s obviously not trying to hurt his friend. You could argue Tigress isn’t either, but she knows Po can take what she can dish out, and honestly she has that sort of tough love thing going on, so I don’t think she’s holding back too much.

The first time I watched this movie, I was late to the theater and arrived just after Shen's backstory was explained. Not knowing made the scene at the destroyed panda village hit that much harder. Still my favorite film of the trillogy.

Nice reaction! Personally, I liked Shen more than Tai Lung as a villain. Maybe he was weak physically because of his illness, but it was smart to play it safe and fill this gap with weapons and strategies. One more thing I liked about him is how cruel he was, he was actually the first ever dreamworks character to kill someone on screen and that someone was his most loyal soldier -with no hesitation too-, he is the only DreamWorks villain to be considered pure evil aswel. But besides all that, what I liked most about Shen is how at the very end, he just closed his eyes, accepted his fate, and felt almost relieved that all of this will come to an end and that he will finally find what he had desperately been seeking for all these years, inner peace. There is also a lot more lore behind him which wasn't mentioned in the movie, since it was considered "too dark for kids".

If theres any chance of redemption from any of the villains, Tai Lung has the highest chance of redemption, otherwise if its for revenge, i think they're gone for good. But i dont see how Tai Lung will return for redemption. I mean, he IS powerful, but not powerful enough to be on Oogway's lvl AND to break out of the spirit realm. Kai only did it cuz he stole the chi of others, with the help from the other masters including Tai Lung and Oogway, he was able to get out of there.

According to the director there are 6 kung fu panda sequels, I don't think they will use a new villain for each one of them considering Kai was quite literally a demi-god, I really don't know how they can outdo that. There's no way Tai Lung is not coming back, honestly even though I prefer Shen, I would be as happy to see Tai Lung on the big screen once again. Overall a goated villain, his prison escape was fire

Tai lung wanting to be the dragon warrior and Shen wanting to rule China. But both had darkness in their hearts which made them both unworthy to get what they wanted which lead to them both taking there rage out on innocent people bringing shame on both themselves and to there families leading to both of them to be exiled from their homes. An both of them being fated to be defeated by the dragon warrior/ Po. They are both technically "tragic villains "

I absolutely love Shen as a villain as well as his end. He was defeated by a warrior of black and white, which while certainly did fit Po, who defeated him in his own way, but in the end he accepted his own death and died by his own hands. Few things I would like to point out in this movie. 1. Shen knows Kung Fu. It's not to the extent of say... Shifu, or Rhino, but it's to enough of an extent. And it definitely payed off, what with him holding his own against Masters Ox and Croc, only falling short when Rhino stepped into the fray moments later. And when he got the upper hand on an Emotionally Dampened Po, and fought against him at the end of the movie. 2. Shifu is a great teacher. This isn't really referenced in great detail. If you all remember in the first movie how Po referred to Shifu as the "Greatest Teacher in all of China" (I believe that's what he said, if not then something close.). It seems only fitting that he's the one who convinced Ox and Croc to leave their prison and join in the fight. 3. Shen created his own demise. Defeated by a Warrior of Black and White. As obvious as it seems, the prophecy was not actually referring to Po, or any Panda for that matter, or really anybody specific. What it meant by "Warrior of Black and White" was someone who had mastered inner peace. It didn't have to be a Panda, Shen just took the prophecy to literally, and set out to wipe out an entire species.

This is a great reaction, as always! I think in this movie, the villain was more obviously fragile, I mean, he destroyed his own palace I believe to attack Po and friends. His fighting seemed fine, but his power over Po went away when Po found inner peace, so I get why you say he's weaker than the previous villain.

Both po and shen are yin and Yang warriors of black and white. Both shen and po can be opponents to eachother but at their cores are battling with themselves over who they are. Shen disregards his parents and the heritage/inheritance given to him to make his own path yet he is obsessed along with his parents over this idea of future defeat, not letting go of the sooth-sayer but holding the fortune teller prisoner to hear it repeated not letting things flow as she suggests. Their reason for being warriors is not from their birth rite but through their actions and steps. Shen walks down his own staircase that he claims is his birthright and reaches the bottom of the stairs unsurprisingly, all from his from his efforts of walking he doesn’t pay attention to where he steps in the present moment. Meanwhile while po is carried up the steps by shens men to the confrontation. Pos reason for being abandoned is a result of not shens attack but a result of his mother caring for him and trusting that he will be safe- the mother let’s him flow similar to Moses in a basket, allowing him a chance to grow and be himself. (Something Shen was denied when showing talents for fireworks in a new direction then his own parents to expand business- we are noodle folk broth runs in our veins and Shen is from fireworks and isn’t allowed to shine in the sky, he’s weighted himself down- while Shen is prohibited from even a spark and eventually he’s snuffed out like a wild fire completely exhausted and surrounded by the water elements that don’t encourage his growth. Po finds an island with the encouragement of others in the present moment believing in him watches not only where he stands and the bullets flying at him but genuinely look at shen and acknowledges and accepts that he stands before him. Something Shen cannot manage to do is confront po and see him as the opponent or opposition to himself shens worst enemy is himself and he allows himself to be ruined by his own actions letting the pillars he build crush him under their weight in acceptance. I think this movie was visually less compelling then the last or next ones as it felt a bit rushed and the constant back and forth with the flashbacks and flash forwards to be a little over the top when all the movies do have this quality to them. It’s a lot of the same scenes repeated with slowly more information shared and the growth felt natural yet a little forced. I think it was cathartic at the end until the reveal of the father setting up the next story making it feel like it’s going to keep progressing and that inner peace wasn’t ultimately achieved

Shen as a villain both “was” and “wasn’t” personal. His ambition amounted to “cannons can be better than kung fu” and he got a prophecy that a specific type of warrior would stop him. Instead of examining his goal for why that would happen, he makes it personal by pre-emptively striking the pandas and taking out a number of them, which… isn’t actually what sets him up to be taken down. No, the issue is now, where he’s aggressively targeting kung fu instead of just making his cannons worthwhile as an alternative. He kept the soothsayer around to keep tabs on any progress changing his future, but never made the particular change that would make any difference to it.
