Fred Warren Ashley, originally from Idaho, was born on January 12, 1923. During World War II, he served in the C Division, the Second Reconnaissance Mechanized Cavalry of Patton's army, which, at the end of the war, operated in the Šumava region, today's territory of the Czech Republic. On May 4, 1945, their 22-member group was surrounded and captured by German soldiers. Fred W. Ashley was seriously wounded, and German soldiers buried him behind the wall of the Dobrá Voda cemetery.
Thanks to the testimony of one of the residents, his body was found, and today, he is buried at home in the USA.
In Dobrá Voda, thanks to the volunteers, there is a memorial plaque commemorating the death of this nice 22-year-old boy from America, who died far from his home.
I combined a visit to his memorial plaque with a friend's visit and a metal detecting in Western Bohemia.
