पोबीटोरा वन्य जीव अभ्यारण्य गुवाहाटी से 50 किमी दूर मारीगांव जिले में स्थित है। यह अभ्यारण्य मुख्य रूप से एक सींग वाले गेंडे के लिए जाना जाता है। 30.8 वर्ग किमी में फैले इस अभ्यारण्य में 16 वर्ग किमी में सिर्फ गेंडे रहते हैं। चूंकि यहां बड़ी संख्या में गेंडें हैं, इसलिए ऐसा कहा जाता है कि गेंडे अभ्यारण्य से बाहर भी निकल आते हैं। गेंडें के अलावा इस वन्य जीव अभ्यारण्य की दूसरी विशेषता यहां हर साल आने वाले प्रवासी पक्षी हैं। यहां हर साल करीब 2000 प्रवासी पक्षियां आते हैं। अभ्यारण्य में एशियाई भैंस, तेंदुआ, जंगली बिल्ली और जंगली भालू सहित कई अन्य जीव भी देखे जा सकते हैं। अक्टूबर से अप्रैल के बीच इस अभ्यारण्य को घूमना सबसे अच्छा रहता है। सड़क मार्ग के जरिए गुवाहाटी से पोबीटोरा वन्य जीव अभ्यारण्य पहुंचने में एक घंटे का समय लगता है।
पोबितोरा वन्यजीव अभयारण्य (Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary) गुवाहाटी से लगभग 45 किमी दूर मोरीगाँव ज़िले में ब्रह्मपुत्र नदी के बाढ़ के मैदान में स्थित है। ... सर्दियों में पोबितोरा पक्षियों के लिये स्वर्ग बन जाता है, जिसमें हज़ारों जलप्रपात आर्द्रभूमि को रोमांचित करते हैं।
पोबितोरा वन्यजीव अभयारण्य (Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary) गुवाहाटी से लगभग 45 किमी दूर मोरीगाँव ज़िले में ब्रह्मपुत्र नदी के बाढ़ के मैदान में स्थित है।
पोबितोरा वन्यजीव अभयारण्य का मात्र 16 वर्ग किलोमीटर क्षेत्र 90 से ज़्यादा गैंडों का आवास स्थल है। गौरतलब है कि इतने कम क्षेत्रफल में 90 से ज़्यादा गैंडों का रहना इस अभयारण्य को दुनिया के उच्चतम जनसंख्या घनत्व वाला अभयारण्य बनाता है।
गैंडे के अलावा तेंदुआ, फिशिंग कैट, जंगली बिल्ली, जंगली भैंस, जंगली सुअर, चीनी पैंगोलिन आदि जैसे अन्य स्तनधारी भी यहाँ पाए जाते हैं।
सर्दियों में पोबितोरा पक्षियों के लिये स्वर्ग बन जाता है, जिसमें हज़ारों जलप्रपात आर्द्रभूमि को रोमांचित करते हैं।
पोबितोरा को तीन अलग-अलग श्रेणियों में विभाजित किया जा सकता है: वन, घास का मैदान और जल निकाय।
Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, Kaziranga National Park get affected by Assam floods
Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is nestled in the grasslands of Assam which is the dwelling place of the Greater Indian One-Horned Rhinoceroses with its highest population in the whole world. It is landlocked by Assamese villages from every side of it with the traditional Assamese culture. Overall, the terrain of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is a breathtaking experience for a traveler or an admirer of nature.
Pobitora is mainly famous for its great Indian One-horned rhinoceros. Besides rhinoceros, the other animals are leopard, wild boar, Barking deer, wild buffalo etc. Assam’s Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is also home to more than 2000 migratory birds and various reptiles. It is also an Important Bird Area.
Asiatic Water Buffalo
The Asiatic Wild Water Buffalo is scientifically known as Bubalus Arnee is known to be found in the Central Indian Forests and is mostly restricted to the states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
Recently, it was found in the forests of Maharashtra after which the Maharashtra Government declared the Kolamarka forest area as a conservation reserve for the Asiatic Wild Buffalo.
Asiatic buffalo has the widest horn span among all bovids found globally.
The wild buffalo is mainly found in the alluvial grasslands, marshes, swamps and river valleys. They are generally found in areas that have plenty of water holes and resources.
The Asiatic wild buffaloes are of enormous economic significance as they are the direct ancestors of all the breeds of the domestic buffaloes.
However, over time their population has decreased at an alarming rate because of various reasons such as poaching, loss of habitat and breeding with domestic buffaloes.
Protection Status:
It has been listed as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
It is listed under Schedule-1 of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.
It is included in CITES Appendix-III and is legally protected in Bhutan, India, Nepal, and Thailand.
National Park.
It is often called ‘Mini Kaziranga’ due to similar landscape and vegetation.
The wildlife sanctuary is home to endangered one-horned rhinoceros and the other mammals such as Leopard, Leopard cat, Fishing cat, Jungle cat, Feral Buffalo, Wild pigs, Chinese pangolins, etc.
About 72% of Pobitora Sanctuary consists of wet savannah of Arundo donax and Saccharum. The remaining area is covered by water bodies.
Water hyacinth (an invasive aquatic plant) is a major problem to the area especially to waterfowl, as it forms thick mats on the water surface.
There are 5 national parks in Assam namely,
Dibru-Saikhowa National Park,
Kaziranga National Park,
Manas National Park,
Nameri National Park,
Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park.
