fantastic video sir. its been about 12 years since i started making electronic music, and originally i started with daws and midi controllers, but that got out of hand so i went the modular synth route, and that started taking up a lot of space, so i eventually started looking for little things to make music with. these pocket operators, along with the korg volca and monotron series, make up my current setup. sooo much fun. im thinking about taking them all apart and building a custom synth (or two due to liking to keep things small) out of all the parts.
@RedMeansRecording8 жыл бұрын
Wow, you've had quite the journey there! Especially going modular and coming back. I thought no one ever returned from modular land. :) I love the idea of big synths, really lust over the Prophets and the Virus TI. But my pocketbook and attention span push me towards smaller things that I can make music with on their own. Hence all my groovebox kinda things. Fun and inspiring. What are you thinking about doing for your custom synth?
@wrldwideindifference8 жыл бұрын
ha yea it started as gear lust for me, using reason a lot, but being frustrated with how tedious it was, and seeing people with the MASSIVE WALLS of modules and wires like, i want in on that, what even is that haha. i would watch videos about modules, and acquire featured modules or stuff i could identify, and see what i could do. at the time i was also into circuit bending, and was trying to destroy toys and cheap keyboards to make cool sounds because i was really into idm/glitch, etc...and i was making custom cases to house stuff i had taken apart...eventually i thought to combine the two interests, to make my own instruments...now whenever i buy something, i wonder, could i make it better...im not sure what i plan on doing, i kind of just do it, like, i took the po-12 apart last week, as well as a junk zoom r16 mixer i had, and combined them to make a drum machine (currently housed in a shoe box while i work on it and design a case). it only has 9 channels but now i can volume control with sliders each channel and assign various drums or loops to those channels...essentially enhancing what the po-12 can do...i feel like im rambling haha (quote you nervous hands time cant stop typing i could go on for ever)
@wrldwideindifference8 жыл бұрын
ever heard of a band called The Flashbulb (benn jordan)? he also got me on this path. i had no idea back then how to get crazy synth sounds out of a guitar, but i wanted to, and didnt understand cv/midi conversion, and those hot hand things didnt exist, so that also got me into learning how to build and circuit bend stuff to do what i wanted.
@RedMeansRecording8 жыл бұрын

Here's my take : Sub : some great sounds, some sounds I don't really know what to do with. Can get some awesome glitchy stuff playing with the step-locked performance effects. Rhythm : Actually really useful little drum kit with a few sounds I don't use much. Again, the performance effects and the ability to sub-sequence (lightly) per step make this shine. On it's own, you're just going to get a cool little drum toy, but paired with something else it would be dope. Factory - This one is really cool. Capable of leads and complex sequences. Also has a rudimentary drum machine that can be sequenced independently of it's synth sounds. Arcade - maybe the best choice for your first one as it offers drums, leads, and chords all in one. You can get a big sound out of it and the performance effects are unique. Office - I don't know, I just... I mean, I want to like it. I find that it works better as a filler in the context of using all of them at once, but on it's own it's a little esoteric for me. Robot - Another standout, maybe my favorite after Arcade. Great lo-fi "video game" leads. You can sequence a sound, play a lead on top, and there's a drum machine that can play independently, IIRK.
