Pocket Size Ultralight Daypacks by Osprey & Sea To Summit

i have the sea to summit, it is extremely tough. For the past couple years, once a week I use it to do my beer shopping. I usually throw somewhere between 10 and 20 bottles/cans from my local bottle shop and trek back a mile or so to the house. It's plenty strong enough for that purpose, but the nicest thing is how small it gets. Even though the bulk on that Osprey is still quite small, I think it's big enough that it would inconvenience me as I almost always have the tiny sea to summit bag on me, I would probably end up leaving the Osprey at home due to size. Just this afternoon I went grocery shopping and ended up at Lidl, which charges for plastic bags, luckily I had my Sea to Summit bag on me and I fit two cans of tomatoes, three cans of cream of mushroom soup, 2 pounds of chicken, three limes, some green onions and a dozen eggs into it.

Finally I found someone who use these bags for grocery shopping lol. I looked the the STS bag in the store, it looks so wrinkled and flimsy, it kinda turned me off. So it's really the better of the two?

@@lepetitchat123 I think it depends on what you value. To me the compactness of the STS wins hands down. But that's because for my use case I intend (and generally do) keep this bag on my person at all times. The osprey looks big enough that it would be inconvenient to stuff in a pocket, but to be fair I do not have one. I still (two years later) do much of my shopping with my STS bag and have since bought another one. It doesn't hold much, but I regularly realize that I've run out of milk for my morning coffee and pop over to the grocery store a half dozen blocks away and grab some milk and whatever else I might need (that fits in a rather compact bag) and haul it back to the house.

Okay, so I purchased both, expecting to like the Osprey more because of the water bottle holder, and the extra compartment. However, when I fully loaded up all my gear in both for a day hike, I actually found the Sea To Summit was actually noticeably more comfortable with regard to the shoulder straps. How could this be, since the Osprey has padded shoulder straps and the other does not? What I found is that the padded portion of the Osprey actually doesn’t support any weight at all in actual use, but instead the weight is all on the outer edges of the shoulder straps so that each side literally feels like two small ropes digging into your shoulders, whereas the Sea To Summit, even though not padded, the weight was evenly distributed over the entire shoulder strap width, effectively more than doubling the weight distribution of the load you’re carrying. The second thing that made the Osprey less comfortable was that, where the shoulder straps attach to the lower part of the pack, they attach at a much narrower distance apart from each other (left side and right side), so that they dig into your sides/ribs. The Sea To Summit has a wider attachment separation so it does not dig into your sides like the Osprey does. I really really wanted to like the Osprey more due to the extra pouch and especially the external water bottle holder, but when fully loaded up with clothing, food, and water for a normal day hike, the Osprey was noticeably uncomfortable, while the Sea To Summit was a dream to carry the light load. The only inconvenience being having to take one shoulder strap off and swinging the bag around to the front so I could get my water bottle out. However, I decided this was worth the extra comfort, and being able to enjoy nature without the constant reminder that I’m wearing uncomfortable straps. I might actually try and sew on my own water bottle holder, or perhaps do this on the front side of the straps so I can have super easy access, while also balancing the packs weight. Hope this helps someone! If not, do what I did, but both of them, load them up, try them out, and return the one you find less comfortable.

I love my Osprey ultralight stuff pack. It's my beach bag; fits two REI flex lite chairs, two towels, sunblock, keys, sunglasses and a water bottle!

As a pack that can be flattened out to fit other travel bags for arrival use (after a flight) the REI Flash 18 is tops, but runs 10 oz and isn’t even designed for stuffing. Sea to Summit is best as a packing cube then as local rain jacket or warm layer carrier and as a 7-11 shopping bag. Osprey looks most like a real pack, can be used as an organizer in luggage (but too tear drop shaped for a regular packing cube). I have all 3. That having been, said I always transit with a 4 L PacSafe hip pack which doesn’t get counted as a third bag when boarding if on my hip; use it as my local EDC bag overseas; and have never touched my “stuff” packs no matter which one I bring along. However I still routinely bring the Sea to Summit along “just in case”. I just wish I had never un-stuffed mine, it’s impossible to re-stuff, but as it arrives factory stuffed is truly a micro bag that can go with me at all times in all other bags.

I love my Sea to Summit ultra lite pack. I use it all the time. It's great for how small it packs down. But that osprey pack has the added features is you were going to use it for more heavy duty hikes. I think of both of these pack as more of a summit pack rather than a day pack. Great video man.

I would probably choose the Osprey as a back up pack/foraging bag for multi-day camping, as it would stand alone better. The Sea to Summit would better serve as a back up bag within my bag, in case I need to gather/carry stuff beyond my main bag's capacity. At 3 ozs. and such a small footprint, I could carry that as part of my EDC kit with ease.

i think if the velcro on the osprey's stuff sack was differently positioned it could shrink down as much as the sea to summit one, since it isn't very squished when packed up.

Wish Osprey would have put another water bottle pocket on the right side of the pack. I know that it would load the bag down significantly, but it would allow light, bulky clothing/shelter stored in the main compartment with hydration on the sides. As it is, it would be too unbalanced as a small pack for me with 32oz on one side.

That Osprey looks nice. I have the Cotopaxi version of these, which has been pretty nice. A bit heavier but also has water bladder capability. Also glad it has the second small pocket for keys, etc.

I look for colors which are less attractive to the eye. I do not want to stand out all the time. I am a big fan of grey and foliage green. They blend in better.

It's a good review , i am a big fan of mini bags like this ( i have 8 various types )they are all worth there weight . Keep them in your regular pack / car for extra capacity . I sometimes have a moan , this time video is top notch . Tks
