Restoring passenger rail service between NYC through the Poconos to Scranton just got one step closer to reality with $9M of federal money announced by Congressman Matt Cartwright and Senator Bob Casey in Scranton today. The money from the Infrastructure Act will go to help improve the railroad tracks and a bridge that will make it possible for Amtrak to operate daily routes carrying passengers through the Poconos to NYC and Scranton within hours.

I wish we would spend as much on railroads as we do highways. Railroads have proven themselves to be superior to cars in capacity, carbon footprint, and land use and we still don't give them the proper funding they deserve.

Friendly reminder from across the Delaware that Pennsylvania basically gets to decide whether this really happens or not. What happens next week absolutely makes a difference in terms of continuing to reconnect NEPA to the NYC region. You can choose progress or you can choose vandalism.

Can't wait to see this much needed project come to fruition. When this moves further along I think they need to extend it further up through Binghamton NY and Buffalo. Amtrak could shift one of the NYC-Buffalo (Empire Service) trains over to this line. It would be faster! It'll uplift all the areas it serves.

You know they've been working on this since 1979. They've blown plenty of money on studies,consultants etc. So far it hasn't produced one train ride to anywhere. Is it a 'waste'?. Well,yes but then again we waste billions and trillions on just about everything else. The money itself is a drop in a bucket. I think this will cost between 100 - 150 million. There is nothing to work with. It just isn't rail and ties. You need a lot to run a railroad. Dispatching,signals,PTC,maintenance,stations, etc. If it only was going to go to Binghamton or Buffalo,then you could spread you costs over a larger rideship base. It seems so limiting in it's planning and outlook. We need to take a more regional outlook at this. We used to build things in this country, that generally didn't need 45 years to accomplish nothing.

This project wouldn't be hard at all to complete in theory. It's just for every penny we give rail projects, we give dollars to highways. We've already seen this route succeed in the past. The Scranton to NYC mainline across the Lackawanna cutoff was one of the best graded railroads in the world.

@@skitraindance wrong Helpers were use until the End From Scranton Pa to Clarks Summit and from Scranton Pa to Stroudsburg Pa. I know you were Young But i was there the El ran 3 sd 45 from Apx Newark Nj to Marion Ohio, then 2 sd 45 to Chicago Il i did like the el spent a lot of time at the Marion Oh Yard, the Crews were nice as long as you did not get in their was and left when they gave you the Hint, after 1976 i had to settle for Conrail Toledo East and West, Toledo west as a lot better 70 MPH TV trains 79 MPH Amtrak, the slow Freight Trains coved 140 miles From Toledo to Elkhart in 4 hours Elkhart was nice to train Watchers back, Pace a lot of Conrail train Next to Us 6 there was a 66 MPH speed lint on us 6, i got our ran a lot even at 65 MPH, yes i was Speeding a lot them were the days
