Prof. Niranjan took my interview for the PhD program in IITB. Even though I wasn’t selected, I genuinely appreciate how supportive he was throughout the interview and open to my propositions and claims. I came out of it thinking what a nice person I had on the panel. Glad to see a longer conversation with him here!

Mathematics has always my bugbear since childhood! I had many douts in my mind but could not be clarified mostly due to fear of asking questions from teachers but some extent due to inexperienced teachers. First doubt I l i got was - 2+2=4, 2×2=4 meaning that multiplication & addition is the same. But why 2×0=0. Similarly, was the circumference of the circle ! I had sneaking suspicion that if we convert circle in to a straight line, length of the line should be the equal to the circumference! But I never ventured to ask this doubt to be clarified from teacher nor the teacher ever tried to !!!! But I clarified this dout at my own after retirement. My point is to say that at the initial level where we need the most experienced teachers- there are the least experienced.

The reason why IMO students in US can dedicate more time (5 months) for preparation is because talented 12th grade seniors have completed their college applications and almost finished high school. Either they relax and enjoy the last semester or dedicate time for such pursuits as this or others (eg. on job training / internships / leadership / mentorship etc ).

Great to have representation of mathematicians! I was one of those who never heard about the Olympiads until it was too late. Luckily I did join ISI nonetheless. Statistics is not mathematics, but you can't do real statistics without maths! (And, statistics will actually make you money lol)
@swapan
@swapan 4 ай бұрын
I would say Statistics is the other side of the coin where one side is Mathematics. Math deals with surety while Stats deals with uncertainty. Eg. while lots of Math is involved in Physics but when you go to quantum level, it involves Probability. Same thing is happening in Economics & game theory (Sanjeev Sanyal brings about this insight very well) and many more disciplines.

K R Parthasarthy was the head of math at IIT Delhi for a while, sorry to hear he has passed away. I can't remember the name of the fellow who taught us Laplace transforms. I believe he was an algebraist (we vaguely understood such specialization even back then), but he was delighted to be teaching a bunch of very smart would-be engineers and scientists -- he could barely keep his feet on the ground. Looking back, I would fault the faculty at IIT D for not engaging the students in research -- faculty in the US would commit serious felonies to compete with each other for the chance to have such talented students.

Further, at Bachelor degree level we studied Mechanics, Astronomy, Differential Equations, Real Analysis, Complex Analysis, Linear Algebra, Linear Programming etc . We also had Numerical Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics. We all had these with no practical 😂 in real life situation. Because of mathematical knowlege, logic and reasoning are our basis which enable to succeed in any non- math life.

India's performance in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) faces challenges due to how the education system is set up. In India, there is a big focus on exams like the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), which stresses quick problem-solving and memorizing over understanding and creativity. This focus makes it hard for students to develop the problem-solving skills needed for success in the IMO. There are also many fake Olympiads, like the SOF IMO, that can mislead students and take away time and resources from real preparation. Additionally, many students feel pressure to pursue careers in engineering and medicine, so they don’t focus as much on mathematics. This contributes to why India doesn’t have as many celebrated mathematicians or Fields Medal winners. Unless the education system starts to focus more on creativity and exploration, India's achievements in international math competitions will likely continue to lag behind other countries.

Excellent discussion and all power to the youngsters and their teachers/coaches. Please do not go the way of the Chinese and kill the joy of the subject. I have a suggestion re the work of Madhava and his school. It seems that examining the corpus of this work requires a team, with expertise in Math, Sanskrit, Malayalam, the religious practice of the time, geography of Kerala, and history. All this is beyond the reach of a single person. It requires a sustained collaboration across these disciplines.

Superb podcast. Please also have an episode on Memory Championships - I'm not sure if people from our country participate in it. But it will be incredibly interesting.

I see that TIFR conducts IMO-IND but not sure if they are sponsors too. I think the Indian IMO body should approach TATA / TCS or Infosys to build brand value around it just like what has happened in chess. I think it will be complimentary to their Chess sponsorship.
