Thin Lizzy Live and Dangerous with Ben Findlay
So after decades we can now see how many overdubs there really were on Thin Lizzy's classic live album 'Live and Dangerous'
In this exclusive podcast sound engineer Ben Findlay talks about and shows on screen what was involved in mixing the This Lizzy 'Live and Dangerous Super Deluxe Box Set.
Ben shows on screen the actual multitracks so we get to talk about the age old question...so how many over dubs were there?
Ben Also talks about the recent Beck Bogert & Appice Box Set.
Ben's expertise is a rare blend of traditional, pre-digital recording techniques and vast experience in live concert mixing. His skill set extends to record production, 5.1 surround sound mixing, album mastering, on-site recording, live TV broadcast mixing, and studio consultancy.
Ben's versatility makes him an invaluable asset for any audio project. His impressive portfolio includes collaborations with iconic artists such as Robert Plant, Peter Gabriel, Clannad, Simply Red, Lionel Richie, Jeff Beck, Paul McCartney, Sting, Cara Dillon, Yusuf Islam (formerly known as Cat Stevens), Thin Lizzy, Paolo Nutini, Patti Smith, Gary Moore, Van Morrison, and Beck-Bogert-Appice. Join me as we delve into the world of sound engineering with the immensely talented Ben Findlay.

Thin Lizzy - Live and Dangerous one of the very best " LIVE" albums ever ! I'm thrilled that Phil you are discussing these landmark and magnificent LIVE recordings , which captures this definitive line-up at their very best in concert.

Great interview that really clarifies some of the mythology surrounding Live and Dangerous. For those who wanted to listen, there were enough raw recordings of Thin Lizzy around, bootlegs or unauthorised releases, to form a realistic appraisal of how the band did sound on stage, but so many people were ready to discredit the album on the basis of some loose remarks by Tony Visconti it began to feel as though the band's legacy was being undermined.

As a Lizzy fan this was a great interview! On a classic live album! But I assume for many other bands live albums from the time some cleaning up might have been done! The Classic UFO Strangers in the night has a similar feel to it! Great stuff Phil!

Very interesting. Thanks. The box set sound spectacular. The best rock band of all time at their peak. A bit of a dissapointment that there were edits to Scotts guitar and additional audience even on the new release. So the edits were limited to a Scott-lick and audience sounds for ”Baby Drives Me Crazy” Hammersmith 16th or were there more?

Thanks, Phil, a very good discussion with a very interesting chap - I learnt a lot from Ben's words, especially the differences between a "remix" and a "remaster".

It’s like justice has been served. Thanks for that Phil, that was not merely a landmark interview, as far as I am concerned, it serves as a very important testimony which finally dispels the myth regarding the authenticity of “Live And Dangerous”. The box set that some of us battled for last year went a long way in vindicating this iconic live album to be of sufficient liveness and danger that its title has boasted for decades. It was after decades of loving this album when I stumbled upon this myth regarding its authenticity and pedigree. The version I’d heard was particularly extreme suggesting that Brian Downey and the audience were the only live portions on the records! I can’t think of a better qualified horse and mouth to get the final confirmation from than Ben. The musical importance of all this cannot be overstated. For me, this album is well and truly fully restored to its rightful place on the Mount Olympus of live albums where it can once more rub shoulders with the likes of “If You Want Blood”, “Live at Leeds”, “Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out”, “Waiting For Columbus”, “No Sleep”, “Hendrix In The West”, “Made In Japan/Europe” etc, etc. All in all this interview is equal to talking to somebody who saw Hendrix live or who witnessed The Beatles from the same rooftop. All that aside your interview matched my expectations and delivered a fascinating and highly informative hour of entertainment. I could quite happily spend hours in the company of any pro audio engineer. So who’s next? Glynn Johns, Martin Birch or Eddie Kramer?

very interesting conversation. Brought back a few memories of working in an analogue/digital recording studio during the 90s and using those techniques to master tracks. And of course, I worked on all the Lizzy gigs at Brum Odeon too . Thanks Phil. Regards, Dale

Just caught up on my tele on KZbin. Thanks Phil for this fantastic show. I'm a huge geek for info on recording stuff. Any chance you can do a short info piece on how to join patreon and how and where to log on to the show once you do. I'm older and confused by modern technology. I really want to join though.
