Science is the faith that the future will behave like the past. Here is Prof. J. Searle kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKK5hn6jitF5bacm37s giving a great explanation as to why this is. He goes over the problem of causation and briefly describes the problem of induction.

Aaron Mughal I’ve been married for over 10 years so yes I do know what it’s like to get criticized lol ; ) I’m with you on Lao Tzu. Eastern philosophy has made many great contributions as well but I’m far less familiar with there text so that’s why I cannot comment. I look forward to reading more on this topic in the future.

Guys, guys guys - Philosophy won't answer this. Physics will, Statistics and Mathematics. Philosophers talking about these things is a little bit like a virgin giving sex therapy (to speak with Charles Poliquin). Trust me ;)

Aaron Mughal Philosophy will tell us that we know nothing. That everything we know is a mental construct. Science accepts this. Many scientists are open do the idea of us existing in a simulation. That alone should tell you how, open for discussion, science is. Science is innately open-minded. Nothing is out of the question. In fact, everything is in question. Dealing in evidence is the best way we know to learn. This is the scientific method. A method for finding the answer to a question. Philosophy is great. Don’t get me wrong. But in our present existence and consciousness, science is the way to find out how the universe works. For sake of the argument, let’s say science is not an effective method in learning about our natural world. What then? What would you suggest we do? Do you have another method that is more effective? If you have no suggestion, I think it’s best to have an open mind. That’s what a scientist would do. That’s what your philosopher would do. The difference is the scientist is doing more work to find answers. I don’t want to speak for Firas. However, from what I gather, he would probably agree with this.

Aaron Mughal I suppose I just don’t see this indoctrination that you speak of. When I talk about science, I’m talking about what it is and not what people think it’s become. When I talk about scientists, I am talking about the actual scientists. Not some supposed scientist that has some obvious underlying agenda other than science. That person is not a scientist. That supposed science is not actual science. That’s what I mean. Doing the math is exactly what is. It’s simply just doing the math. Blind belief in science is not scientific. The double slit experiment is what it is. An experiment. These scientists make educated approximations but these are not set in stone. They are very accurate, I might add. The Copenhagen Interpretation is simply an interpretation. It is what we use because it the best we have at this point in time. The Many-Worlds Interpretation is also, simply put, an interpretation. The ramifications of both are infinite. The point I am making now is that science is what it is. It is science. We’re trying to figure out whether it is fiction or not, using your terms. Also, some things that were once fiction are now factual. This is true. Another thing, your perception of reality is exactly that. Perception. It is how you perceive it to be. It’s not what reality may actually be. The funny thing is we’re kind of in agreement at the end of the day. I believe in the facts, just like science and you do. I just like to leave the door open for some fiction, using your terms again. For some of it may be proven to be fact in the future. I love Tesla, btw. He never gets the credit he deserves. Anyway, this is a great discussion. I am seeing this from a different angle since that JRE podcast. Good stuff, Mr. Zahabi.

Firas, you did a magnificent job in explaining the philosophy of science. I've had some die hard 'scientism' (dutch) friends watching it and they were actually rattled in a positive way. It was very insightful and surely triggers the appetite to study the philosophy of science in greater length. Keep up the great work coach! ✌️️

Speed Demon thanks for your impute. Like philosophers can misunderstand scientific theory, scientist also can misunderstand philosophy. A mature dialogue is needed. Science was born from philosophy not the other way around. Science is useful but truth is another animal. Your arguments shows you haven’t understood Hume’s position take the time and try. I will be doing the same on my end.

Coach, thanks for this follow-up, initially I was turned off by the discussion on Science with JRE, but totally respect you for accepting you were mistaken in some regard. I just wanted to ask you something about faith, particularly when you rephrased Hume: science is faith that the future will behave like the present. Although I am a religious person, I don't see the word "faith" being completely appropriate here. Religious faith implies remaining firm in conviction despite lack of evidence (thats part of the beauty of religion no?). On the other hand, we can examine the tremendous scientific data accumulated in the past and see that, at various checkpoints, it indeed has behaved consistently. Would love to get your thoughts, thanks

wiremessiah Justifying a belief by presenting the explanations and arguments of the great thinkers of philosophy? Having a medical actually proves the entire argument. You go to a medical, because there is faith that the future will repeat the past events ;) Do you know for sure that the medical will go 100% correctly?

That bit on science resonates so much with me. I read a lot of articles on research in several fields and so many contradicts one another. And even worst, some scientists just refuse to acknowledge that new data arrives all the time and cannot admit or even take a moment to look into the information given, using as excuse that this or that was proven or disproven long ago. As if it was an un-shakable thing. Brilliant stuff here. Thanks Firas.

For a guy not educated in exercise science, you are very knowledgable when it comes to periodization, programming, overtraining, and recovery. Also you have an excellent explanation of the concept of speed-work in strength training and WHY they work (which many strength experts find difficult to explain) That was very good and I can see why GSP was so consistent in his performance and career having you in his corner. I would like to see you back on JRE in the future that was a great episode. Thanks for the content

DADDY so you dont count as educated if you dont have a piece of paper and a few grands of debt that say you are?
@06livefast
@06livefast 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I should have stated "formally educated". Personal research is a form of education, which is why the fact Firas knows so much (from studying on his own initiative) is so impressive, especially because of the fact that he has not followed a pre-determined system of studying these topics. When you go to college or university to receive an education, you follow a pre determined schedule and system of studying that ultimately ends with a well-rounded knowledge of multiple facets of that subject (in this case, being; exercise science). However, to still end up knowing so much detailed information in depth, about multiple different subjects within the realm of exercise science, without following a system and taking to initiative to research at his own will, is truly impressive. That's all. Leave your "credibility of academia and its relevance" debate to yourself, and smoke a joint, maybe relax a little.

I'm a PhD biologist , so had no idea about the physics, however, I found your discussion around the scientific community and philosophy of scientific experimentation very interesting. I really like you and George theory and thanks for suggesting Managing Oneself, it really helpful. I didn't watch the Joe Rogan podcast, but I did watch a clip (nearly an hour long) of the philosophy discussion. I had considered myself a very deep thinker, but you said a lot of things in that podcast that left me with new things to reflect on. For that I thank you. In regards to what you said about how a scientific revolution works, I think it makes a lot of sense. But, I realised as you were describing it that it is also exactly how a paradigm shift occurs within any given consciousness. I have since started conceptualizing methods of truly awakening people to important things, by selectively smuggling the correct information that will end up "under the rug" before offering the solution. There are moral factors that would need to be considered, but you gave me a good starting point for something that could turn out very useful, so I thank you for that also. Finally I think you compose yourself very well. Joe Rogan, I believe, was quite rude in a couple of occasions, but you did an excellent job of remaining calm and rising above it. It is rare to see a good example of anything nowadays, so keep doing what you are doing.

I find the best way to avoid injuries in wrestling is to literally get better and keep your skills sharp. Once you reach a certain level of skill and balance, it's going to be really hard for people to take you down. Even if someone is better than you, they have to work really hard to take you down i.e you're colliding with the mat at a much lower rate. I don't believe in going 90% while wrestling, because if your partner has an identical skill level to you and is going 100%, your 90% effort is going to result in you getting planted.

I find a lot of conflicting info. on "sport specific exercise", particularly in relation to Martial Arts; should the focus be to strengthen weak areas in your physiology, depending on your style? Or is the goal to strengthen and maximize force delivery within your preferred method of fighting? Efficacy of the workout vs. efficiency of time is, of course, also an important factor. If you could speak on this Mr. Zahabi I would greatly appreciate it.

Firas even from a perspective of absolute hypertrohpy of the muscle and increasing the amount of your lifts I.E PR, I have to say that I’ve always believed that 100% seeking is best but it was only until I met a coach that actually incorporated equations to my deadlifts let’s say Sunday 50%X50 reps other days 70% X30 and 90X5 depending on the day of the week and his analysis of how I’m developing , that I was able to increase my deadlift from 75 KG to 180 Kg in less than three months, I was stuck on 75 for more than four months myself with my old mentality . Then I started incorporating other muscle groups into equations and in the long run the flow state is what will reach further and further. That is given the necessity of understanding equations and level of the student/athlete, the teacher will cam thereby reach amazing results if applied correctly , which can be extremely difficult and that separates good coaches from normal coaches ... I understood exactly what you said on the JRE because it hit me straight away, that is exactly what was happening to me ...

As you continue to expound upon the philosophy of science and the nature of Truth, I highly recommend Huston Smith's Beyond The Postmodern Mind (alongside his other works). Smith helped found the philosophy department at MIT as well as taught at Syracuse and Berkeley. He is easily one of the greatest religious and philosophical minds of the 20th Century. Also, definitely do a podcast dedicated to philosophy and religion. Critical thinking is at a premium in this day and age.

I'm quite certain you'll find it enlivening, particularly as it relates to the enterprise of faith. He cites Kuhn a handful of times in that work as well. I had the good fortune of meeting him before he passed. He was truly a remarkable man. jAk

For going to 70% instead of 100% training, would this still apply for those that only work 2 days a week, with about 3 days between training? I understand going 70% if you are training almost everyday, not those that train minimally. Thank you!!

I have a question regarding the flow. If you are in a flow state in a fight against an opponent who is as good as you and better, certainly the difficulty level must be close maximum? So not like level seven in Tetris when you can handle 15? Is it different in training and in a fight? Because it seems like some really good fighters find the flow state easy even when they are up against the highest level guys. Great video. Thank you so much.

Dr stephen seiler gathered a very large body of data from most olympic endurace athletes in scandanavia. And is reflecting exactly what your experience is. High volume at 50 -65 percent Heart rate maximum. And only 20 percent at 85 -93 percent of max heart rate. Not above that because of ghe stress on the system.

Hope training is going well, things that helped me. Warm up before class, jump rope or a light jog and try to roll on the matts before. Stretch after every class Look up excersises for joint injuries. Even if you aren't injured work on your joints always. Band work is best. Do this on your days off or after class Swimming is amazing Eat healthy Limit your rolls and only go hard once a week. Drill a lot

Firas, I wonder if you’ve ever read Quentin Meillassoux or Alain Badiou. They both engage with the implications of mathematics, logic and science in philosophy, in different ways. Meillassoux in particular seems like he would be really relevant for your interests, since he interrogates the question of truth in philosophy in light of contemporary science and I believe quotes Hume. Badiou, in a kind of dialectical reversal, responds to him from the perspective of philosophy. His politics may not interest you, but his work is relevant to the discussion, I feel. Anyway, thanks for everything you share with the community!
