Kate Middleton, like any public figure, is certainly deserving of privacy. But I also think that it's absurd for the royal family to complain about the massive proliferation of rumors filling in the resulting information vacuum. The massive fortune that pays for the luxury lifestyle the royals enjoy is made off of the family’s status as the Kardashians of Kensingtion Palace. The royals need to make peace with the choices they themselves made and move on.

This is crazy. So many general health problems start with the teeth. Dental care is preventative care! If you have good dentistry, you don't need to spend as much time tackling acute full-body problems because you stopped them at their source: the mouth. But so many healthcare systems don't include dentistry, or only include two cleanings a year and not any medical intervention.

Labour's dealing with discrimination? The Forde Report, commissioned by Starmer. The Labour Files - Al Jazzera.
@refinnejjennifer66869 ай бұрын
I was disappointed by the waylaying of discussion of the hierarchy of racism by Beth. Nish made a valid intervention that there is a clear hierarchy of racism within the UK that “privileges” (for lack of a better word) concerns of antisemitism over Islamophobia and anti-black racism (as well as other types of discrimination faced by groups like the Roma). He also made a fair point that the media, in particular, prosecuted antisemitism within Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party much more effectively than any type of bigotry displayed by the Conservative Party. But where was the discussion over the same hierarchy at play *within* the Labour Party that enables allegations of Islamophobia and anti-black racism, the findings of the Forde Report, the disproportionately harsh discipline meted out against black and minority ethnic activists, councillors and MPs, the lack of support offered by the Leadership to, particularly women, MPs who receive the most gender-, race-, and religious -based threats of violence. Nish and Coco had the opportunity to hold one of the leading political commentators to account on the frankly shoddy job the lobby has done to hold those in power to account and, sadly, did not do a very effective job at it. I love the show, but am honestly left disappointed.

Badger anecdote: As a child, I went camping in the woods with my Dad and brothers. In the middle of the night I heard strange noises and saw shadows, so I woke my Dad. He opened the tent flap, shone the flashlight outside, froze, and then slowly pulled his head back in and rezipped the tent. He said it was nothing and to go back to sleep. When we were home safe the next day, he let me know that there were at least 4 badgers (that he could see) surrounding our tent. 😅

I think the impulse is to assume the Tories are deeply incompetent when it comes to comms but has everyone missed an actual competent move this week? I think you can argue the Tories have already lost anyone who cares about Islamophobia or anti black racism and pays attention to Westminster. I personally don't vote for parties that don't acknowledge I'm an equal human being deserving of the same dignity and humanity as anyone else but that's me. Not every potential voter agrees or even thinks that deeply on the subject. Bringing us to the political equivalent of "some of my friends are black" which more than one person has used. It's possible they're all idiots, very possible, but someone somewhere should still know how ineffective a defence it is. It doesn't just not convince people, it does the opposite. That is unless that's how you defend yourself or think about racism. So are they just giving up on anyone who thinks Frank Hester is abhorrent, especially if it is worth £15M to the party, and targeting people who think everyone is too "woke" and can't understand what the big deal is anyway?

39:50 Quick comment while I’m all fired up - grrrr, I hadn’t seen that from Matthew Parris, and to say I’m not impressed is an understatement! 😤 I’m a couple of years older than Nish, and got a very overdue ADHD diagnosis and subsequent treatment 8 years ago; which was all of: a relief, a validation, an answer to many questions, helpful, upsetting, a thing that made me think “what if…”, and something that made me think about who I am and how I relate to people and how I function in the world, almost from scratch. It’s been a journey, shall we say! Completely connected to this, I’ve also been figuring out being autistic at the same time, which in many ways has been more challenging (but the interaction between the two has been the biggest struggle in my experience! Also, you can take medication to treat ADHD symptoms… but if you’re also autistic, in my experience I’ve found that taking ADHD medication actually makes the autistic traits rise up and become stronger; I guess because the two conditions were in some ways pulling in opposite directions and masking the other, and drawing on the positive traits from each condition where useful?!) Plus the process of getting an official autism diagnosis through the assessment process as an adult has been seemingly impenetrable to me, so my diagnosis has almost been a side-note from my otherwise eminently qualified consultant psychiatrist during the formal ADHD assessment process, and follow-up aftercare. And I refute everything Parris (and other neurodivergency skeptics) say(s)! It might have taken me into my 30s to get any kind of diagnosis, but it’s not like I just spotted a bandwagon and jumped on it 🙄 When I was a small child there were “differences” noted, and I apparently had a psychologist assessment I only found out about *much* later… but being a female child in rural Cornwall in the 80s (and otherwise high-achieving academically), there was a huge stigma involved; lack of clarity about it being anything other than a negative thing that would bring doom instead of any clarity or assistance meant that my parents thought it in my best interest not to go down that route at all and risk being “tarred with that brush”, so to speak (phrasing indicative of the mood at the time!). I don’t for a second doubt that they did the best they could with the knowledge they had, but given the time again, with the current level of knowledge and understanding in society etc, I would definitely prefer having had the diagnosis early and relevant accommodations in place right from the start! I *know* I’m by far not the only person with this kind of experience, so it’s no wonder there’s been a surge of adult diagnoses concommitant with the increase in understanding, in stark contrast to what was available decades ago! tl;dr - a great choice for villain of the week!
