Personally I think complex trauma is always better than normal variant, whether you opt for the multistrike variant, or the less duration variant. I think I would like to play the Less Duration Variant personally.
I also forgot to talk about the ascendancy. Turns out I couldn't find a way to have 4 empty gem sockets, so I put this POB with Primalist instead of Warden. Maybe the 3 charms will be stronger than 1 tincture. 🤷‍♀️
COMPLEX TRAUMA 2 VARIANTS:
1. Multistrike variant (aps breakpoint: 9.99/5.1*3 = 5.87): karui chopper (slower leap slams), 8.5M damage, take 1/3 normal trauma damage, 6s ramp to max dps, potential to play boneshatter on non-jugg/non-slayer ascendancy
2. Less duration variant (aps breakpoint: 9.99/2.09 = 4.77): despot axe (faster leap slams), 6M damage, take normal trauma damage, 2s ramp to max dps, slightly reduced clear due to smaller trauma explosion procs
3. Normal variant (no aps breakpoint): despot axe, 7M damage, normal trauma damage, 8s ramp to max dps, able to use rage/berserk/accel shrine

hello, editing smokie again here with some more findings: the breakpoint is NOT 9.99/duration, i tried that in game and it bricked my trauma stacks. i give up on doing math and won't be talking about complex boneshatter anymore cuz its frying my brain and whether it's better than normal boneshatter or not is questionable. but someone informed me it was 9/2.09. (aps threshold = (max stacks - 1)/(trauma duration)). so i guess what i said in the video was correct after all, even though i didn't arrive at that conclusion by the right methodology. illustration: you want max 1 trauma stack with 2s trauma duration. 1.999/2 = 0.99 APS with 2s trauma duration means you attack every 1.01s. so, in between 1.01s and 2.02s, you have two stacks of trauma. rather, you want 0.45APS, meaning you hit once every 2s. then, every time your attack lands, the previous trauma stack falls off, leaving you exactly at 1 max trauma stack.

hello, editing smokie here: i made a mistake in the video, the numerator in the damage calcs actually should be 9.99 and not 9. i mistakenly assumed 0.99 APS meant hitting every 0.99s but it actually hits every 1.01s. this slightly raises your APS limit. i edited the video description and pobs to match this new number. 🙄 edit: this is wrong and it should be 9 apparently, see pinned comment

Hey, love that you mathed out the multistrike variant. I just tested it, and you can pretty easily ramp faster than 5s if you stutter step (animation cancel) and only use the first of the three attacks. You can get up to 8-9 traumas in less than two seconds. Also, I think the clear for the MS variant would be the highest, as in testing with MS I am always somewhere between 5 and 8 mega-traumas, whereas with regular BS I am only a bit higher than that, but always less than 15 min-traumas. The less duration variant would only have a couple mega-traumas up at a time. Again, this is due to your ability to animation cancel multistrike. I am going to league start crit slayer MS Boneshatter of CT, but not do the APS breakpoint stuff and still use rage and berserk and frenzy charges, and just be careful to not hit 10 traumas (aka 'edging'). If I get too excited climax at 10 traumas, I can re-ramp pretty quick.

Great vid. My plan is also go play complex trauma. However im not going any special tech to limit myself to 9. The plan is to use complex as the self damage is way lower since it caps out at 4.5k. I also found im a few fights i never got to massive stacks so complex just seems like an straight upgrade. Just wondering why Jugg and not Slayer. By just change the build from Jugg to slayer i went from 500k to 800k dmg in pob. Just as since complex ends up with you taking less damage back compared to the big stack version im not sure that level of tank is needed. Or is the issue that since slayer gains attack speed if you kill so that maths will change and you lose stacks ? With the amount you take im not 100% sure on leech maths but a slayer has 10% reduced while leeching + fortify and then armour and also phys as x also. Lets say this makes the end value 2.9k i have seen something about the cap for leech is 3k. However im not 100% sure on how fast that leech applies for example. You might need to get some more max hp to increase how much you can leech.

I like the idea to bring down trauma with Multistrike, but I think I will initially still go with the more casual variant that does not anoint less duration and just drops Ancestral Protector

Smokie! Now I need your help. I am suffering. First of all, thank you for the content, I enjoy your style. I was certain going Slayer Boneshatter after watching your video about potential charge stacking. I went with last league, feel confortable going again. But your points for Jugg is just so compelling. I want to focus on ultimatum, but I just can't reroll a new character it is too painful for me, I am affraid I won't be able to scale Jugg through the end game. My budge/playtime are usually 150~200div ceiling. Any ideas please?

That budget should be more than enough to scale into endgame! I’ve scaled jugg boneshatter into endgame and cleared all content in ssf on a far smaller budget

Have you experimented with dropping Ancestral Protector as a way to reduce attack speed? There's some qol with one less totem there too.

i tried it, initially i thought it was good but i think in the end keeping the totem setup was more optimal

The only problem with this setup, is that you're using multistrike. You don't need it for general mapping, and is actually a burden. You will clear a pack in a single hit, then be locked into the 2 extra swings. When you could just be using the regular gem, and blasting. Only use case here, is likely bossing. Less ramp, so easier time reaching damage potential while needing to dodge mechanics etc..

I like the shorter ramp with Less Duration better on the new gem. But with Rage being out. Doesn't that bring Maces back onto the table?

i thiiiiiiiiiink axes still has higher DPS than maces even without axe mastery, unless there is some mace tech i don't know of. but yea i also like the less duration more

Hi, thanks for this. Do you think with the 1st version (1/3 Trauma damage) is possible on a Champion for example, using Perseverance? For example with the new Barkskin from the new ascendancy to further boost Evasion and Armor?

yea, i was thinking about this actually! i think on the high end this has potential cuz you could fit determ+grace+pride, and max suppression, and become really tanky, and maybe barkskin as well if it's any good. and then yes perseverance. i haven't pob'd it yet but it sounds good

@@smokie_777 Just trying to understand broadly what is the cons of Champ vs. Jugg - hmm. I guess attack speed and accuracy, as well as the ability to stay at default action speed at all times (QoL). The rest of the ascendancy nodes for Jugg are mostly there to provide the negation of Trauma damage. In the 1/3 Trauma scenario, around 60k armor on a Champion should suffice. Perseverance provides free Fortify and Onslaught, enabling us not to take Fortitude ascendancy point. I don't know - this is just from the top of my head. If you could possibly figure out a PoB, would be great, as I am not skillful enough to do that.

Regular bonezone was already possible on champ with the regen from divine shield, so there is that if nothing else.

I was able to get around 33m pob phys dps with burst damage (focused, berserk up and other stuff) on ssf boneshatter without any alt qual gems. Doing 30 wave simulacrums was not an issue at all, Kosis died in couple of seconds, if i had some rage and my cds were up. What I'm trying to say is that it is not worth to go with alt qual Boneshatter, the idea tho is cool, but losing berserk and rage? Nah, i dont feel like it is worth at all. Even in ssf, not talking about the trade league, where u can get Berserker's rage on hit node.

hmm i think if u dont optimize for the breakpoints, its better to use normal boneshatter, cuz each complex trauma is 20% more damage

It’s not too bad IMO. Assuming average of 5 trauma, that equates to 20 trauma on original boneshatter in term on outgoing damage, but only 12 trauma in term of self damage

I may be wrong here, but would you not need to aim to have a little over 9 trauma. like 9.1 trauma as a target? i know this will in theory mean that for every 10 "cycels" of trauma you will hit 10 trauma and you will loose them all. But this will allow you to maintain 9 trauma with higher uptime assuming you actually move around and do other stuff. in an ideal world where you can just stand and slam, as colse to 9 trauma is "optimal" but i assume some small amount of 9.X trauma as the target for attack speed must be optimal for actual realistic uptime DPS.

just an extra note, would the reduced duration of trauma not be a huge DSP "loss" when moving from pack to pack? calculating for perfect uptime, synced with attack speed might lead to an average trauma count during maps, that is lower than you would by just running normal boneshatter. This might be something that is only possible to prove during regular mapping and monitoring the Trauma stacks, but i have a gut feeling this might cause "issues". Will also add i think this is a really great video, and you have a good way of presenting the numbers. Just adding my take cause i think this is a really interesting topic :)

@@Mr.Kronk2 Dont think the dps loss when mapping matters much. Having to stand still on bosses for optimal trauma stacks might be feeling pretty bad though, especially on harder content. But then again bossing on regular bonezone isn't actually the best experience in the first place...

@@DrDanQ92 also my experience. alternatively, having a regular build with complex trauma, that dont "care" about max trauma might actually be better for bossing. as your "average" trauma ramps a lot faster, meaning that small damage windows will deal more damage with complex trauma vs normal boneshatter.

@@Mr.Kronk2 Yeah I can see that, maybe even mapping on regular bonezone and then swapping for complex on eater/exarch etc, maybe with support swap to less duration as well. I'm not gonna start this anyway so I'm not gonna theorize too hard on it but will be interesting to see follow-ups on this. My gut feeling is that it's not very easy to just make a pob and conclude that "this will be optimal" (not saying smokie did) because in reality bosses move and phase and such so yeah we will see I guess.

Does it matter that the boneshatter of complex trauma has 70% attack speed scaling vs reg boneshatter attack speed scaling of 85% for the calculations?

oh, does it? damn i must have missed that detail...it shouldn't matter too much since you're trying to hit an APS breakpoint rather than scale it really high. should be fine if you take some more attack speed nodes on the tree i guess. worst case you could drop melee phys for fortify support or something.

@@smokie_777 Yah, I put it into your POB under custom modifiers as -15% attack speed, although maybe I did it wrong and that is not how you are supposed to do it, and dropped 2m DPS

@@Kahrul_ ok so i looked into this you can modify the POB gem data to make boneshatter 0.7 attack speed scaling vs 0.85 then (for the less duration variant) you'd drop melee phys support and replace with fortify, then respec fortify wheel points into damage/attack speed wheels the total APS in the end is the same and so is the total damage which is really interesting...

i guess one cool thing about these "APS breakpoint" build ideas is that you can mix and match a bunch of different APS/damage scaling sources and you can always optimize no matter what the nubmers are

If I am not mistaken normal Multistrike gives trauma every 2 attacks and Awakened Multistrike gives Trauma every 3 attacks? Another issue I see is that I am not sure if the trauma you gain with an attack counts toward the damage you do with said attack. For example if you have 8 trauma and you attack you do 160% more damage and gain another trauma to get to 9 or you do 180% more damage? My guess is the first and in this case you will do your attacks at 8 trauma in reality and having 160% more damage as attacking on 9 trauma with 180% brings you to 10 trauma. Another negative of the Complex Boneshatter is that taking less trauma means less recovery, making the main reason Boneshatter makes us tanky less effective.

hmm the less recovery is true, but you also take less trauma damage so it's a double edged blade i guess. the 8 vs 9 stacks of trauma concern is valid, cuz yeah, you can't attack at 9 otherwise it'll go to 10. so when you land the attack, you'll always be at 8 trauma... *thinkies* so yeah, i guess in my pob i should calculate it at 8 stacks of trauma for damage. 🤔🤔🤔 as for multistrike the normal multistrike repeats twice right? so the first attack will gain trauma and then it will repeat twice more but not gain trauma, so 1 trauma in 3 attacks afaik
