Really great video, Steve. Glad you’ve come around more on Stevens. A poet I also keep coming back to trying to grasp lol. One of my favorites.

I'm inspired by how much you and others find in Stevens. For some reason I can never get anything out of poems like his without totally getting rid of the lines and and stanzas (literally backspacing them in a Word document!) and reading the pieces as prose.

I have so many favorites from Stevens: Domination of Black, From the Misery of Don Joost, The Apostrophe to Vincentine, Anecdote of the Prince of Peacocks, Depression Before Spring, The Emperor of Ice-Cream, Tea at the Palaz of Hoon, Disillusionment of Ten O'Clock, Frogs Eat Butterflies..., Tattoo, Gubbinal, Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Black Bird, The Idea of Order at Key West, Poetry Is a Destructive Force, A Rabbit as King of the Ghosts, and The Irish Cliffs of Moher. I respond more to the cadence of these poems than their meaning, so I'm guessing we'd eventually get in a knife fight over some of these, Steve. The introvert's introvert? A raging a-hole? I didn't know that about him, but I like him even more now.

HAH! I'm getting the very faint impression that you're Team Stevens!

Some say the late collection Auroras of Autumn was Stevens' best, but I could not make much sense out of it. The "Harmonium" poems, though, are some of my all time favorites. It doesn't appear that there are any nice collectors reprints of Harmonium, but the Collected Poems is easy enough to find. Stevens was a very careful and considered writer. There's a collection of his letters that includes correspondence with an intrepid fan who asked for and received detailed glosses on what Stevens intended.

I read a poem a day, right now I am alternating between Wallace Berry's Collected Poems and a collection by Josephine Bacon who is an indigenous Québécois poète, next I think Longfellow in the Modern Library anthology

I like your theory. American poetry died by 1956. Started dying earlier. Took a grad class that was partly about Wallace Stevens but didn't get why he was being taught. I was hoping you'd tell me. The words may be nice but meaning eludes me.
