Patrick Swayze wanted to do all of his own skydiving scenes but the producers couldn't get him insured. So he and some of his skydiving friends and I believe the skydiving stunt coordinator took a camera and shots those scenes themselves.

I quote this movie constantly. It's endlessly quotable. When someone mumbles their responses, I usually, say, "I CAN'T HEAR JACKSHIT ABOVE THE LAWNMOWER!" Once, a customer called to move his service and he and I just quoted PointBreak back and forth while his buddies moved all his furniture lol. "THIS IS NOT SOME JOB FLIPPING BURGERS AT THE LOCAL DRIVE-IN." etc etc forever and ever, amen, the entire script. My dream - (one of them, a small dream) which I will accomplish soon - will be to have Point Break playing on loop on a dedicated tv with voice activated volume command.

You guys ever hear of thr Point Break and Terminator 2 theatre shows in Los Angeles (probably other cities too). I don't know if it still exists, but it was very successful. The show was a performance of the movie except that the cast each week was, whoever fucking wanted to do it. I think the process was, show up/pay, put name in a hat, get given a script and go on stage. They packed the house.

You might already know this since It's like a bit of common trivia about the movie, but the studio wouldn't let the cast film the skydiving for real but Swayze wanted to anyway. The studio was adamant (something about insurance I think) and Swayze said screw it, got some of his friends and crew to do the skydiving stuff out of pocket with his own people about 30 times. Keanu wasn't there, that's why his close-ups are more green screen and fake looking. Swayze is the only reason that skydiving sequence is as steller as it is.

I thought Kathryn Bigelow was awesome long before she because the first female director to win Best Director for THE HURT LOCKER - her best film in my opinion remains STRANGE DAYS, a totally awesome cinematic masterpiece that's in my favorite films, and which I saw in my late teens when I just getting really into cinema. Ralph Fiennes and Angela Bassett were just fucking awesome, and I also think that it's the best screenplay that James Cameron, Bigelow's ex, DIDN'T direct! He also produced the film, going so far as to have enormous sets built just for the pieces of that film alone (remember, he used to work as an art director for B-movie king Roger Corman before he first made it big in the 1980's.)

I saw Point Break in the theater, when I was 16. When Keanu jumps out of the plane, without a parachute, to catch Patrick Swazye, I was chewing through each of my fingernails. So damn tense. As far as movies you guys might like, I'll suggest The Hidden (1987), with Kyle MacLachlan. Great bat-shit plot involving aliens and cops (which was a recurring theme in the late 80s). Great performance from MacLachlan. There's one of the best car chases involving a Ferrari in any movie. And it somehow fits in the creepiest performance by a dog, ever. Worth checking out.
