For the Enfield rifles, you can change out the front sight to different heights. the rear notch sight on my SMLE was 200m and was shooting way too high for my 50-100 yard liking. However, I learned that they were zeroed for 200 meters and you can change the front sight to a taller version (Mine was -.30 and I put in a 0) in order to get a closer range accuracy.

On your 03 just turn the windage knob and you'll zeroed. All of those rifles back in the day were battle zeroed to the medium engagement ranges normally encounterd in ground combat. Soldiers were trained to adjust aim to hit what they shoot ayt
@Whitpusmc8 жыл бұрын
Yes, yes they do. Each soldier would sight them in.You have to because each soldiers eyes are different and each one holds the weapon slightly differently. . For instance the French MAS 36 rifle has replaceable rear sight leaves that the armory would replace after an individual sighted in his rifle on a special target. There are replaceable front sights with different heights for the Lee Enfield's as well. There are USA standard sighting in targets for the M1 Garand / M14 and the M16/M4 series of rifles. One favorite topic is what distance to sight in an M4 and what result that gives in hold overs and unders by distance. When I was in the Marines when we were issued a different rifle we would first go zero it, then qualify with that rifle. The USMC armorer at TBS had a self made sight tool for the M9 pistol if we needed to drift the sights on them as well. As far as I know only the Japanese issued sniper rifles pre-sighted in and non user adjustable.

Worth pointing out about the belt buckle hold, military belt buckles aren't where modern pant belts are worn, they were worn above hip bones, so the belt buckle itself was closer to just above where your belly button is. Good video though, 8 years old but holds up way better than many other KZbinrs.
@luvtahandload76925 ай бұрын
When I first shot my 1903, it was way high at closer ranges. Then I read somewhere that you're sposed to aim at the belt buckle for a torso hit. Would you consider a decent fore AND aft bag setup? The reason for the horizontal displacement of shots is he didn't zero the rifle for the ammunition used. All those rifles have 'drift adjustable' front sights, which were intended to zeroed for windage by the user prior to combat use. That those rifles shot 'oddly' is not surprising. Also consider his comment about 'battle sight". The intent was to be able to hit a belligerent out to (check the manual for range) without fiddling with the sights. Milsurp World; this video was worthwhile and did present some useful information. I liked it and encourage this caliber of video. But watching a guy at a bench shoot three round groups from eight rifles back to back was a bit tedious.

I guess during WW2 it really didn't matter if you hit the enemy a tad low when you're close enough to smell their bad breath. All I can say is the "old" bolt actions (I own 2 Mausers also) from WW2 will shoot well. Would not want to be downrange while an opposing soldier is trying to perforate my tender body.

James, would you be OK if I say there is no god, or actually there are lots of gods people believe in, depending largely in what part of the world they were born, and everyone for some reason thinks their god is the correct one, which obviously can't be right. Now, if for the sake of argument we believe there is one god, why would the god bless (whatever that means, do you know what it means?) America and not, say, Papua New Guinea? Or do you want the god to 'bless' all countries, in which case why don't you say that? By the way, are you by any chance American? Do you believe the god should look more favourably on your country compared with others and if so, why? And lastly, this video was about battle sights on old military rifles, why do you bring your god in to it? I'm seeking wisdom and understanding here, although I came for information on old rifles.

Unless I missed it you didn't mention at what distance you zeroed each rifle. Or are you saying the battle sight zero is 300 yards for each?
@MilsurpWorld8 жыл бұрын
These do not need to be sighted in like civilian rifles, they come that way from the arsenal. The No 4 and 98AZ have 300 yard/meter battle sights, the G98 is marked 400 meters, ect. I say what each sight is when I show the target.
@Whitpusmc8 жыл бұрын
+North Florida Gun Guy I should have replied to this not done a separate note, sorry. While a sight may have battle sight zero distances you still have to zero it personally at that distance. You can zero a rifle in at any distance, though you should zero it so that the range gradations then correspond to those distances.
@MilsurpWorld8 жыл бұрын
400+ meter ranges in Florida are pretty rare so I haven't fired them at that range if that's what you are asking.
@Whitpusmc8 жыл бұрын
+North Florida Gun Guy yes, not surprised, but usually you can zero for a longer range by using an offset and a shorter range target. For instance the Army does its battle sight 300 yards zeroing on a 25 meter target with an offset. Frank Proctor talks about getting a 5.56 50/200 yard zero by shooting at 10 yards and computing the offset (his was 1.9"). So you aim at a circle at 10 yards and expect a group to be above that at 1.9" if it is, you are zeroed for 50/200 yards, if not adjust your sights and shoot again. You are effectively doing this exercise. Assuming your rifle is zeroed at 400 meters, shooting at 50 produced the offset we see on your target. But that's only valid if those rifles are correctly zeroed and after 100? years the chance that the sights have been altered is pretty good.

@OldManMontgomery4 жыл бұрын
Only adjustable for windage; should be able to 'drift' the front sight from side to side. I use a brass rod and a small ball-peen hammer. If the rifle was seriously out of elevation, most sights (military issue) could be replaced with a taller or shorter blade to correct that aspect. Some were 'judiciously' filed.

@brentyoung73568 жыл бұрын
If you or any collector can tell that I modified the rear sight without another sight for comparison I will give the rifle to you. My gunsmith is a retired tool and die maker for Colt. I fixed a 91/30 rear sight to suit him. You have to do some slick work to impress him. Rifles are meant to shoot where you set the point of impact. My 91/30 is a 1930 Tula with a hex receiver and a laminated stock.

Oh okay, I imagined something rough looking when I pictured a sanded rear sight. You should make a video showing what you did. Might make an interesting topic.
@brentyoung73568 жыл бұрын
It's pretty simple I used a belt sander to cut the sight base down. I ruined the first sight base with a cut off wheel. A regular carpenters belt sander naturally walks down the angled part. Then when you get to the bottom just let back of the sander down. Give it a try! You will see that it is easier than falling off a log. You do not need to remove the sight base from the gun. I actually set my sight base at the range.

I'm a new subscriber and I enjoy your videos a lot. Next time you shoot a bolt action rifle, try using your palm to manipulate the bolt, instead of grasping it. It makes a big difference. Watch this video starting at 6:00 kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2Klap9rpM2If6s

I used to own a M44 and have felt many 91/30s and they all feel terrible to me. I've been meaning to get a Finnish M38 but I haven't run across a good deal yet.

Yeah, but I like finding good deals on stuff. To me it's not worth the 400 + shipping + transfer.

You are a Klutz who shoots at the wrong target one third of the time . Just give up or watch Iraqi veteran.

Why don't you buy a bunch of surplus rifles and remake this video? Or are you too lazy/poor?

So you're saying Battlefield 1 isn't 100% historically accurate even though it's a video game?
