Great content. I really like how ArcGIS Online's blend modes really bake well into the basemap. It really sends a gleam across the waves.

Cool visual effect, but we have to be careful that artful storytelling doesn't interfere with interpretation. I'm wondering if users might misinterpret the glow as representing the reach of lighthouse illumination?

good point! my next video is actually about creating viewsheds, so this is a nice segue.

I like this...I am going to try this out in Q for a map of ports. I'll report back what I could/could not achieve.

Hey John, after looking at this tutorial I was very interested in making my own map. However, I wanted to learn how to do an animated symbology with perhaps Green, White, Red light flashing alternatively with pattern, which represents a more realistic flashing style. Would you be able to create a tutorial on this please, I would really appreciate it.

sounds like a cool map! I'll have to learn more about animated symbols first. you'll probably beat me to it!

Any ideas how to achieve this using ArcGIS Pro?
@JohnNelsonMaps9 ай бұрын
Yeah good question. Pro doesn’t have effects, but you can darken the imagery by adding the trusty old “global background” layer, making it black, and giving it a blend mode and transparency to taste. Then for the points download the Firefly style for Pro (google it) and do the same steps as in the video. It’s definitely more challenging in Pro unfortunately

Hi John! I'm working on a final project for my cartography class (Jr in college) and could use some advice. The project is on renewable energy locations in Virginia and I currently have the point locations mapped and labeled. The point of the project is to create a professional quality map and I'm stuck on what to add to my map. Do you have any recommendations on what data to add? Or any advice on how to make my map more of a professional quality?
@ninabecksted72929 ай бұрын
I was thinking about creating a story map but since the data is so limited I'm considering a dashboard or an instant app.

thanks for your question, and sorry for the delay! i think it might be important to see, in the context of renewable energy locations, population. visually it would be nice to connect the energy production and energy consumption in the same map. you can do this a lot of different ways, but the easiest may be a simple faint choropleth coloring of small units like census tract population. you could go one step further and consider creating drivetime regions around each renewable energy location, like this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nqWoq3huqKiKgNksi=g6iXkW04RlcfM5j1
