I actually really like the rival fights. It feels enjoyable to be able to battle the rivals so often, then again I feel like gen 6 deserved the most of them.
@jasonreed7522
@jasonreed7522 Жыл бұрын
I think part of it is that rival fights are historically really challenging. Somewhere along the line you went from Garry straight bullying you to May/Brendan being kind but that one fight under the cycling road is lodged in our memories along with Whitney's Miltank to Gen 5 and the rivals actually healing your pokemon after every fight. (And now many rival battles just aren't particularly challenging) I love rival battles and black/white has fhe best story (i think black's is slightly better because You are truth and N is ideals instead of vice versa), bit BW definitely could have stepped up the challenge of those fights a little bit more.

the rival fights in b2w2 are the best because you're not competing with your rival, their whole goal is to get their sister's purrloin back, not to become champion (I think that makes defeating Alder so much more satisfying because you know that your rival is also achieving their goal)
@GamesToJumpMC

I feel like a cool idea for a hardcore nuzlocke in any gen, especially 5, could be to do an "N's nuzlocke". You can only use up the last 6 pokemon you caught, and must catch a pokemon in each new area available after each badge. This way your team shuffles every gym badge / E4.

@@FlygonHG these videos are pretty fun to watch. I typically don't watch long videos, but yours are some of a few that I will. As a suggestion for future snaplocks, I would automatically disqualify legendary Pokemon, and then do the vote based on the non-legendary population. If you're looking for a flavor reason for this, the legendaries are only single individuals in the population, while the several families of Pokemon represent the actual bulk of the Pokemon population.

I love the snaplockes for the same reason as the trashlockes - it means that whilst the game isn’t impossible, it’s challenging based on the way you use this under-utilised mons. Probably the coolest part is all the synergies you accidentally find and the balancing quirks the devs make to counter godawful stats. I’d love to see a more traditionally easy game like ORAS with this ruleset as well - the BDSP one was great

I think Audino counts too, stall is one of the safest strats (boring but safe), and its regenerator ability plus its technical moves like attract and a functional attack stat were really showcased as invaluable earlygame. It just gets slept on because its very reminiscent of Jigglypuff and Chansey lines. Its also possible to guarantee an encouter for it because it appears in rustling grass on basically all routes. Is krookodile objectively better, yes, but you gotta make sure to account for technical pokemon that can get up to some shenanigans. (Anybody that can heal itself counts)

didn't realize that having lots of rival fights was controversial (been a Pokémon fan forever, but I've basically avoided the online fandom up til now). personally, I generally prefer having fights with trainers who are developed at all, and think that suits B/W's focus on narrative more. not only that, it sets up the arcs that continue into B2/W2 in a way that Pokémon could do more with in sequel games, imo. watching Cheren & Bianca progress--especially with Cheren becoming a gym leader--is something you don't see much outside of Koga becoming an E4 member in Johto. not to mention, it adds a more interesting post-game when you can grind against characters you actually have a cachet with instead of just running around with an unreliable Vs. Seeker or doing a Battle Tower run. the most obvious benefit, however, is that it gives more excuses to see the other starters; one of my least favorite things about Pokémon games. starters are THE most important Pokémon in the Dex when it comes to building a rapport between players and their teams, but you only ever get to so much as see the other starters in most games if you trade for them or when you're battling a rival. in gens without two rivals, the third starter just may as well not exist, because you can't get them without trading or hacking, barely any of the games spare the starters to any trainers (except in early gens like Johto), and they never even become a lab assistant when you return to the lab later on in the story (which is such an easy, cute addition I am surprised hasn't been done before--I wish HG/SS had a Chikorita in a lab coat, but I digress). while I am always partial to my first starter in a given region (ex. Tepig for Unova), you can't grow a fondness for a mon you literally never see (which is also the biggest argument against regional exclusive mons aside from the other box legendary usually). as for Hop and such in S/S, I think that's one of the things those games don't get anywhere near enough credit for. I think the series has always been too focused on building enemy trainer teams around types to the exclusion of the trainer's personality. Pokémon is supposed to be about the bonds between trainers and their mons, which can obviously manifest as a monotype trainer, but I prefer when you have stuff like Bruno running Onix (look at that guy and tell me he _wouldn't_ have an Onix). the fact that Hop's team is switched out to emphasize his arc revolving around his lack of self-confidence is not only narratively interesting, it also brings into focus how rivals in previous gens really ought to have more than 6 Pokémon they use against you, as it hints at them having journeys beyond battling you. what if we had a game where a rival does something like trading one of their mons for some exotic mon, only to regret it as Ash did in the anime? rivals are a great way of expressing mechanics of the games in the narrative, and I think in a lot of the earlier gens, they're an extreme missed opportunity--especially in Hoenn and Sinnoh, where the rivals don't have very interesting arcs or teams.

@@MelMelodyWerner The problem is, there’s very little growth between some of the fights, especially with Cheren and Bianca. It doesn’t feel like progression it just feels like pointless roadblocks. And this is coming from someone that loves Gen 5. Gen 8 is even more atrocious on this front. Hop fights you SO OFTEN without any improvement. Even when he goes through that really nice development moment where he changes his whole team he doesn’t feel any stronger.

I've noticed that Elesa's Emolgas will always go for pursuit on the first turn unless there is a super effective move, and otherwise will not go for pursuit unless it is their best option. So for your zebstrika the play would have been to just get an attack off, wait for the weaker pursuit which you would have survived a crit from judging by the fact that you survived the boosted version, and then switch off the next turn when it won't go for pursuit since it has better options. This may not work for electric types however, because normally aerial ace or volt switch is a better move, but electric resists both of those, putting quick attack and pursuit at the same damage, so it may have just gone for pursuit as a regular attacking move

I am once again falling into the hubris of the excitement of you catching one of my favorite pokémon and commenting before I finish the video, BUT: I really love Woobat and Swoobat! I hope little Valkyrie has a better fate than sweet Doyle. Edit: What a great run! I'm glad to see Valkyrie didn't fall, even if she wasn't used too much in the video. Congrats on the deathless run!

You're the best nuzlocker on KZbin in my opinion. You're calm, authentic, humble, not too loud like others, don't come off as pretentious, and explain so many things that viewers with little experience might not get. Your videos are the best and I'm glad I've been following you since relatively early on. Keep up the good work :)

Kudos on the deathless run! I always like to see challenges where unconventional pokemon get used. That's why i do challenge runs at least. If you want an idea, you could take the encounter list for this run and do a loser's bracket using everyone that didn't get used. I think i saw a durant in there with your stunfisk and beheeyem. Give the bottom of the barrel some love!

I've been wondering for a long time: would a "minimum battles nuzlocke" be possible? Both are runnable separately and I feel like there's gotta be a way to optimize it for emerald or something to find out what random encounters are best at what time to get through the game fighting as few battles as possible.

Snaplockes are so fun! I appreciate your videos - I don't have time to stream twitch but the quick summary videos with your calm but dry witty commentary are a really enjoyable way to spend a lunch hour. I'd love to see more snaplockes since seeing rarely used Pokemon is fun. I think another theme rather than monotype could be abilities or loveseats - no TM/HM runs, or runs with only a subset of abilities that are chosen at random forcing your encounters. Forces you to rethink certain strategies and adjust to the game, though it's probably much trickier. In any case cheers and thanks for being great!

I love your videos. You were on the earlier end of starting to do hardcore nuzlocke, and you've remained my favorite all throughout. Keep doing what you do. I especially love it when you find creative ways to ban Pokemon and are each time left with a different set of mons to build your team and you have to use a different underused Pokemon each time. Such as this one, or colorlockes. Have you even considered doing a wedlocke? It puts a huge damper on the team building aspect, but it's also a whole lot more difficult.

I've been waiting to see this since I got the notification since I'm playing a white nuzlocke right now, and I'm probably on my eighth attempt. The First Gym can be a major hurtle since there's no good strong pokemon to train against, and if you choose to not get the monkey in favor of Munna later it can be a huge struggle if you can't get a Lillipup on route 2 or 1. So I look forward to see how this goes.
