The 10 year-old protagonist was, until Alola, an anime-only thing. For the lore-lovers like myself: All the gen 1 protagonists are 11, Gen 2 are 17 in the adventures manga and unlisted for the games, Gen 3 are 12, Gen 4 are also 12 in the manga, unlisted for games, Gen 5, Hilda/Hilbert, Cheren, and Bianca are 14, Nate/Rosa are unlisted, but Hugh, the rival, is 12. BW2 happens 2 years after the BW, making the previous protagonist group 16, Gen 6 are unlisted, but their manga counterparts are 12, Gen 7 are 10, as that is Alola's traditional starting age due to their trial system itself being age-limited, Gen 8 is unlisted. Edit: 11 for Alola, I was thinking it was a 'start the year you would turn that age' thing, not a 'start on/after your birthday' thing. Which means the 10 year-old thing is flat out anime only, unless you count Wally from the Hoenn games. And for general timeline comparison; Gen 1 and Gen 3 happen at the same time (roughly 1979), Gen 2 and Gen 4 also happen at the same time 2 years later (roughly 1981). Gen 5 is 3 years after that (roughly 1984), and the sequels are 2 years later along with Gen 6 (roughly 1986). Gen 7 and Gen 8 are 2 years after that, 7 years from Gen 1 in total, and happen at the same time (roughly 1988). @@Muggy747 Professor Oak made what is effectively a Star Trek Tricorder in the 1970s/80s, the 'modern' digitzation-style pokeballs were made in 1925, and Porygon was made 20 years before Sun and Moon. The infamous banned Porygon episode also showed that not only does digitization work on humans and inorganic objects just fine, and can materialize not just purely digital created matter, but functional complicated devices (the missiles from the 'anti-virus'). Their general tech level itops out at 'can detect not!Cthulu's invasive pests, currently working on a way to go there and kick their asses'. It is stupidly above ours, it just doesn't seem it because industrial expansion is quite difficult when pissing off the local demigods and their superpowered army the major threat. Humans ARE NOT the dominant life form of the Pokemon world. That's ignoring the easy explanation of marketing.

This is an interesting proof of just how valuable game knowledge really is. Even though you knew in general what was going to happen, the lack of specific details cost you the run. That said... I await the inevitable Fire only run, because it was so awful originally and I'm curious to see if it's better or worse in the remakes.

It's better overall, the underground will give you some of the other fire types, for now from what i've seen, you can straight up get a houndoom before gardenia and you might be able to get magmar before the 8 gym instead of electrabuzz.

In Pearl you get a Magmar from the Underground, and in both games you get a Houndoom. It should be harder overall, though, however FlygonHG's strategies should still be consistent across the board.

The Elite Four has a well balanced team with perfect IV & EV spread. Much like in Renegade Platinum. It's funny how the game before reaching the Elite 4 is so easy & then once you face the Elite 4 the difficulty is scaled to Dark Souls level. Nuzlocking this would be very difficult, especially if you're not fully prepared, & just decided to waltz into the Elite 4 like you did in the rest of the game. This game has truly the most difficult Pokemon League out there, coming closer to the difficultly level of some romhacks.

I do agree the affection stat can really cheese some of the fights by some pokemon surviving when they shouldn't. I like to think that I am an average pokemon player I somehwat understand EV's and natures and stuff like that and even then at the same level of the gym leaders or current fight some of those fights are absolutely heinous. The remake is harder than the original and I think the affection stat balances it out somewhat especially since most of the core fights have pokemon with updates moves and items.

When I had to go up against the final Cyrus battle he was down to his weavile, I used my toxicroak. RIP Bana. I chose revenge, got it down to the red, and weavile's hidden ability pick pocket was his undoing. It stole my black sludge and took itself out in the process.

I get from a challenge standpoint the affection status effects but I do think it's the right decision because it shows your pokemon get attached to you. Not to mention you still lost 3 pokemon even when they used the affection machinic so I don't think it's completely overpowered.
