There are some really handy wood working chisels that are perfect for cutting out the grooves. Might be helpful in future. Love your stuff! Glad I subbed :)

When creating the eyes, hollow out a small square and make a square outcrop on the eye to insert. Its easier this way because if you're making a pokemon like Metapod, then both eyes are the same on both sides and not lopsided.
