big thanks to theZZAZZglitch, i used the source code of their cancelled 2020 april fools event in order to be able to compile things into a save file. i cant believe i didnt mention that in the main video i was just in such a hurry to get this uploaded before the end of the day and somehow i missed that im really sorry zzazz. theZZAZZglitch is an absolute genius and you need to be watching their videos if you arent already:
/ thezzazzglitch
oh yea and i also used the text engine that zzazz uses in their april fools events that prints text in a non-monospace font for the text in the misfortune save file i cant believe i didnt say that in the main video i am not a good person

i said its "non-trivial" because its not like with sampled audio where you can just play the same data in reverse. in truth it wasnt that much harder than implementing any other custom song (like the songs for misfortune), it was just a little confusing figuring out how to write the song data. for example, the solitary notes at the beginning have a length of 4 normally, but, in addition to putting them in the reverse order and making them fade in instead of out, i had to put length 3 rests in between the notes and change their lengths to 1 because, in the original theme, the notes fade out way before the next note plays. idk if that made sense im kinda rambling here.

Decided to subscribe after seeing this and the "Ghost of Glitch City" video. I love how there's a bit of added humor into some videos beyond simply showing the glitches themselves, or in this case some good text commentary to accompany the visuals. Even if you're only uploading once a year on Halloween, would love to see more from you in the future. Great work you've been doing here.

14:10 It's actually kinda funny seeing a screamer in a game boy rom. I think you did a fantastic job with blue tears and the ending to buried alive, couldn't imagine how hard it'd be to mimic how songs sound in reverse rather than just putting the notes in reverse. As for blue tears, it's kinda obvious the GB is struggling to handle an almost completely uncontrollable cut scene like that. Although misfortune wasn't completed,m I like what you did with it, my only complaint is that (primarily with the text box and select menus) they're not in the same style as pokemon yellow, but everything else is. Never read to misfortune so idk how accurate your recreation is in that regard. It's amazing how you were able to pull all of this off without needing to hack the rom!

i know this comment's a year old, but i'm just scrolling thru the comments on my stuff and this one hit me in the fuzzies. i'm excited to see what you come up with for your videos! even if they're not in my niche, i love seeing people discuss things they're passionate about. back when i uploaded ghost of glitch city, i made a promise to myself that i wouldnt monetize my videos so that people wouldnt have to deal with annoying ads just to see my silly little projects. of course, youtube updates in the last seven years have sort of borked that plan, but i still dont monetize my stuff because i want to work for the sake of passion, not money. i'm not a fan of money as a concept in general. not that i claim to know enough about economics to propose an alternative, i've just seen the sorts of things people do for the sake of money, and how profit motives suck the soul out of art over time. in short, i work on these sorts of projects all the time, with money being the absolute last thing on my mind. heck, a recent project of mine resulted in a net loss of around $240, with absolutely nothing in place to gain any money back, just to "fit the vibe" better. i know i'm rambling at this point, sorry about that. i just care a lot about not putting profit ahead of my love for my projects. i appreciate your kind words.

The first one, Buried Alive, actually was the real story of the fifth gym leader, and it was supposed to be Erika to be a dead corpse being controlled by her Pokemon that missed her, such as Vileplume and Tangela (No Victreebell, because it was supposed to be a ghost gym leader). And when she was defeated it was revealed that she actually was just an empty shell.

Seems like a creepypasta that spawned from the fact that her yukata was originally drawn backwards (folded in the way reserved for dead bodies) - imaginative but, like Buryman, it seems just a liiiittle too overtly grimdark and edgy (seriously, mourning grief-stricken Pokémon puppeteering their trainer's corpse?) for a game aimed at/starring elementary school kids.

These are all absolutely incredible! Though I have to admit, "Blue Tears", although accurate to the source material, when shown visually, you realise it could've been a lot better; for starters, it is a headscratcher as to why Red didn't fight back, or at least use his Pokémon to defend him. It could've been Blue frantically fighting back against the painful flamethrowers of Red's Charizard, or the almost crippling thunderbolts of his Pikachu, and so on. Eventually, it'd be that Blue would be overwhelmed, with Red using "DISARM" and take Blue's knife away. When it seems like Red's about to completely subdue Blue, he uses "STRUGGLE", which actually sends them both tumbling off the Mt. Silver cliff, with selecting ATTACK now acting sort of like Bind or Wrap where no other moves can be selected, and it instead shows how many turns are left before impact, which in that time Blue almost acts like his old self again, all smug and calm as he gloats that he'll be the one to have the last laugh, and that the look on Red's face will be one he'll fondly remember in hell, which he'll accept with open arms as no amount of pain and agony will drive away the joy he feels in this very moment. Finally, upon reaching 1 Turn Until Impact, Blue gives some parting words to his dear old rival, ending it off with a "Smell ya later, Red." followed by a thud sound and a black screen, though for a few frames before it cuts to black, those skeletal sprites are shown before it seemingly cuts to an RST 38 crash (though this _is_ a fake) - a textbox appears, that being Blue's final thoughts: "The moment before I hit the ground, everything, everyone and beyond flashed before me as I heard that nuisance give the only sound worthy of him ever making: that being his bones shattering on the sharp stone floor below; immediately after this heavenly crunch came my own bones in the next moment before emptiness swallowed my soul whole. It was over. My revenge is complete, and I have no regrets and, for the first time in so long, I feel like I'm happy again. The humiliation you gave me, the pain you've put me through... ...I'll pay it back even harder when we see each other in hell, Red. My suffering is over at long last, but for you, my dear RIVAL? It's only just begun. See you soon."

cello2wc.com/secrets.png that said, i decided to make it as a ROM hack rather than a save file due to the sheer scope of the project (the fact that it requires new dialogue for every npc being the main reason). also because strangled red changes the title screen and the file load screen, while, in an SRAM hack like these, i can only run code _after_ the player loads into the save file....... my strangled red project has also sort of fallen onto the back burner so to speak....... ive recently been much more focused on my GBC port of Petscop.

this is really fun, did you use 8F arbitrary code execution for this? also, a subtle detail but white hand's cry is very well done
@Cello2WC
@Cello2WC Жыл бұрын
8F woulda only been useful if i had been setting everything up in-game, which i decided was waaay too much of a hassle. what i actually did was i gutted the source code for TheZZAZZGlitch's scrapped 2020 april fools event, until i was left with just the code that compiles the rgbasm files into a save file. then i just wrote everything in rgbasm sorta like if i were making a ROM hack. the custom code was run thru a combination of map script hijacking and OAM DMA hijacking. i did, however, use _4F_ in the blue tears file, for the "KNIFE" item. i used an OAM DMA hijack to overwrite the tiles for the item's name, and 4F handled printing the text for when you use the item. i didnt use 8F, because 8F runs code from your party data, and blue needed to have the specific party of a single pidgeot. and about white hand's cry...... you might find it interesting that the white hands are actually magneton! i decided to use magneton because they use the græy palette, and have the same base cry as ghastly. i overwrote their type data so that, in battle, theyre treated as ghost/normal. i suppose it woulda been possible for me to specify a completely custom cry, but it was much easier for me to use the pokémon's normal cry, and then modify the pitch and length parameters. you can actually hear magneton's normal cry for like a frame before the OAM DMA hijack code overwrites the pitch and length values, but i liked the way that it sounded so i didnt bother fixing it.

You know in retrospect, Buried Alive wouldn't been THAT much of a stretch to be in the game. Like design wise it isn't too insane or above an E rating, Earthbound and Dragon Quest infact had actual zombies which arguably looked more gross. The Game Over screen of course wouldn't been a thing but I totally could've seen Pokemon in their first game having the topic of zombies or a ghost pokemon controlling a corpse

For Misfortune, do you have flags checking all of the conditions are met to trigger it? Like if you talk to someone again you aren't supposed to talk to it disables it? Or if you don't talk to someone who you were supposed to talk to? Also, the old man missing the pokemon was supposed to be rare. Is that set on a random chance or a guarantee? Or does the ROM just skip the setup steps completely? Edit: Answered my own question. The save file starts right before you talk to the guy. However, if you do go battle the 1st Bug Catcher on Route 6, it will no longer work. Nice touch. I would still be interested in a version where you need to play through the whole setup process, but it wouldn't be able to be a save file edit at that point as you would have to start from new game. Maybe a save that starts from as close to the beginning of the game as possible to still work. The only other thing about the story extension is that the old man is mandatory in Yellow, where the tutorial can be skipped in Red and Blue. Also in Red and Blue, the tutorial can be repeated, where it cannot in Yellow. This change was done by GameFreak to prevent the Old Man Glitch where you Fly to Cinnabar Island immediately after talking to him and Surf on the coastline to find Missingno. The story also mentioned "if you picked Pikachu", Brock will be more difficult. In Yellow you are forced to have Pikachu, Red and Blue are the only gen 1 games where you pick your starter. I am thinking that you may be able to use less memory if you make the Misfortune section you are writing to mono-color like it is in the screenshots from the wiki. I only know that the more colors / pixels used in an image file, the more space is taken up. If you have the same area in an image file, but it is all the same color, vs if it is has many colors, the colorful file, despite having the same number of pixels will take up more space. However, I also realize that how file size works on a computer vs how memory space works on a cartridge / emulated cartridge may differ quite a bit. Maybe can tell the payload to overwrite other areas of Pokemon Yellow. The music is pretty good as well. Looking forward to seeing this complete.

i did as little as i could get away with for the part before you load into misfortune, so that i could save as much space as possible for misfortune itself. the idea is supposed to be that someone went through all of the setup steps and then saved the game right before talking to the final NPC, and that _that_ save file is the one that youre downloading. so, no, there isnt any code that actually checks whether the setup was completed. its meant to be implied that all that was already done for you. i was planning to distribute the finished save file with a little readme note that makes this clearer: www.cello2wc.com/secret/readme-distr-v2.txt i suppose that i should overwrite the badge graphics in the trainer card at least, it wouldnt be much different than what i did for the trainer card in blue tears... but i think ill only do that if i have enough space left once the rest of the file is finished. in gameboy games, and indeed for many other consoles like the nes, snes, and ps1, color data is stored completely separately from image data itself. thats why you see so many instances of more difficult enemies looking the same as weaker enemies, but in a different color, and things like that. think green vs red koopas in the mario series, different values of rupees in the zelda series, and even the clouds/bushes in the original SMB. these things can all use the same image data as their counterparts, and just apply a different palette after the fact. for the gameboy (and most other "8-bit" consoles), graphics are always stored at two-bits-per-pixel (2bpp), so the same number of pixels will always take up the same amount of space, regardless of the palette data applied. (that is, unless youve applied some sort of compression algorithm, like they did in pokémon g/s/c. ive copied the relevant decompression algorithm into a save file before for another project, and might look into doing it for misfortune. but.... misfortune doesnt actually have all that many unique graphics, so im worried that the decompression algorithm itself might end up taking more space than is saved by compressing the image data.) dont worry though!! ive recently realized that, although SRAM bank 0 is typically considered unsafe for data storage in gen I pokémon games, it might be ok to store data in that bank for these save files. its considered unsafe because it gets corrupted whenever a glitch pokémon's sprite is viewed (for example, remember that your hall of fame data is corrupted whenever encountering a glitch pokémon), but you really shouldnt have to see any glitch pokémon sprites while youre playing misfortune.. so its probably fine if i store data there for these files. thats a whole 'nother 7016 bytes to store data in!! and as a closing thought...... i swear i remember hearing somewhere that misfortune had a total of 4 songs, although only 2 are available online. i dont actually know where that number comes from tho...... one of the missing songs is obviously the game over theme, which you can hear in the video. the other song, i decided to use for chase scenes against debbie. i tried my best to keep it stylistically consistent with the official misfortune songs, you can listen to it here: www.cello2wc.com/secret/bgb_debbiechase-1660322048.wav

@@Cello2WC Cool song on the .wav link. The .txt and your post was an interesting read as well. I enjoyed the joke at the final paragraph of the .txt. I wasn't aware that the old man could have the Rattata break out of the ball. Another thing interesting is that in Japanese Pocket Monsters Red Green and even Blue which had some patches to fix some bugs that Red and Green had, and which the US Red and Blue were based from, is that if your current PC Box was full, that the Old Man would be unable to catch the Weedle, but not in that it breaks out of the ball or the old man runs out of balls, rather the option to throw the ball is selected repeatably, but the ball is never thrown. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJ-mha2mnNStirc I am rather interested in if you are able to make Misfortune using procedural generation. However, it seems that from the original and remakes that have been done, that there are supposed to be set rooms. The ending of the game is trial and error though, which is not as interesting as the puzzle game it could have been. It also seems to use more sprites from the other 3 games which Misfortune was said to be hidden in, so perhaps the space issue would be better with those games. I totally understand why you chose Yellow as your game of choice with how that 2nd story brings more to it. I myself, may not have been as interested in Misfortune if it wasn't in Pokemon as I haven't played any of the other games and my interest in the gen 1 Pokemon coding oddities is what led me here in the first place. Regarding the lack of code to check if the setup was completed, I suppose this means that me triggering the battle with the 1st Bug Catcher on Route 6 disabling the access to Misfortune was a complete coincidence in that the action of entering a battle broke the trigger for Misfortune to start? I also noticed that in Buried Alive, as it appears that you're using Box 1 as your bootstrap that changing PC boxes, attempting to withdraw one of the glitch pokemon, or depositing a pokemon from the party and backing out of the menu will crash the game. Another thing I found interesting in my attempt to escape from Buried Alive and continue the game is that all trainers are repeatably able, but will not approach you, Lt. Surge will not give you the Thunderbadge, all Card Key doors in Silph Co. are gone, and the Rival and Giovanni will not battle you when you talk with them. I attempted to make my way to Pewter City to see if talking to the museum guy and having him walk me there would fix trainer's not approaching, so that I could do the remove Snorlax glitch to proceed, but the exit of Diglitt's Cave took me back to the Route 11 gatehouse instead. With no ability to Trainer Fly and with the usual method of obtaining 8F by item underflow with giving the Fresh Water to a Saffron guard, I truly believe there is no way to proceed past Lavender Town. If I am missing some escape, it's a good puzzle. I had some hope that even without the Thunderbadge, that I could proceed to the Elite Four as I hoped that with other parts of the game being broken that the guard check may have been as well. However, I wasn't able to make it that far. In addition, as Lt. Surge's badge lets you Fly, I was hoping to use the Game Corner Abra's Teleport to Trainer Fly if I was somehow able to make trainers walk up to me again, but that brings us back to having a full party and depositing into Box 1 to make room for Abra crashing the game.

ive played thru as many misfortune remakes as i could find in order to get the best idea i could of what people expect misfortune to be, but i really didnt like the massive amounts of trial and error involved in them. i found myself badly wishing savestates existed in rpgmaker..... i plan to make the gameplay of my version a bit closer to -spookys house of jumpscares- spooky's jumpscare mansion, if youve heard of that game. basically, the majority of the rooms will be randomly generated mazes a la spuds adventure, but there will be certain rooms which will always be the same. i never bothered writing any code that makes sure that the text pointers for route 25 would always be modified any time you enter route 25; i modified the currently loaded pointers in the save file, but entering another map will overwrite those pointers, and theyll be loaded from ROM again whenever you go back to route 25. this was just a consequence of the way that i wrote the save, but i figured that it wasnt an issue, since doing anything other than immediately talking to the npc north of you could be considered "aborting" the event (related: if you talk to any of the other npcs on route 25 after loading the file and without leaving the map, the game will crash. i figured that it was sorta like debbie getting mad at you for getting so close to starting the event and then screwing it up at the very end. in reality, i just couldnt be bothered to look for the proper text pointers for those npcs, so i just pointed them to some text that crashes the game). im using the data of the _currently loaded box_ for the code that the map script pointer points to, which then jumps into SRAM bank 2 if i remember correctly. also if i remember correctly, thats PC boxes 1 thru 6. the "currently loaded box" data is completely separate from the rest of the box data. whenever you switch boxes: - [the "currently loaded box" data] is copied to [the data in the save file for the box that youre switching _from_], and... - [the data in the save file for the box that youre switching _to_] is copied to [the "currently loaded box" data]. this is so that PC boxes can make use of the extra space provided by the save file, while also allowing you to save the game, mess with your currently loaded box, and then reset without saving and have your box be as it was when you last saved. this is why the PC requires you to save the game whenever you switch boxes. and, in fact, this is probably why the PC is split into "boxes" in the first place, since theres not enough room in WRAM to store all of the boxes at once! in my case, however, im using the boxes stored in the save file and the "currently loaded box" data as two completely separate locations for storing code and data. this is why, if you switch boxes and then immediately switch back, the game will still probably crash once you leave the PC. sure, it might _seem_ like you have the same box loaded, but youre basically moving chunks of my code around in ways that i have no way to predict, overwriting some of it in the process (whatever was stored in the box you initially switched to). i never really expected anyone to try and continue the game in any of these saves, although you might be able to work with misfortune.... a lot of stuff isnt going to work in buried, since i overwrote the map script and never bothered to back up and jump to the original script, since the map scripts in pokémon tower dont really do anything interesting other than handling the marowak and trainer battles. trainers wont walk up to you for battles unless the map scripts are restored, and certain other overworld events will be broken if they rely on setting flags in memory and having the map script take things from there. the good news is, without map scripts, im fairly certain that you wont get your badges checked before victory road. also good news, and im not sure if you already knew this, but theres a poké flute in your PC. i didnt use PC _items_ to store any code, so you can mess with those as much as you want. the bad news: without map scripts, the event for waking snorlax up with the poké flute is broken. also bad news: in order to restore map scripts, you need to somehow both load a new map and save-and-reset the game at the same time. there's only one way that i know of to do this, and its to...... watch the hall of fame sequence. im reminded of pikasprey's "softlock picking" series.

i'm not quite sure what you mean... if you mean "can you actually interact with it" the answer is "not much" as, true to the original story, its mostly just a cutscene. if you mean "can you load it into an emulator" the answer is "absolutely", just keep in mind that its a _save file_ not a ROM or patch. you need to load a vanilla pokémon blue ROM into the emulator first, then load the save file. on BGB, you can just drag and drop the save file once the ROM is loaded. on VBA, its something like 'File -> Load Battery Data' once the ROM is loaded, if i remember. i hope that helps, and dont be afraid to reply if you have any more questions~

id imagine they should work on any decently accurate gameboy emulator; tho, i used BGB for testing while developing these, so thats the only emulator i can guarantee that theyll work on. as for opening a .sav file, you need to load the appropriate ROM file into the emulator first, then load the .sav into SRAM (usually labelled as something like "save file" or "battery data") on BGB, you can do that by just dragging and dropping the .sav file while the appropriate ROM is loaded.

The only thing you’d have to do is make a save file already (I saved after putting in my and the rivals names and then being transported into the bedroom) and then close out of the game, go to where the save file is stored, and replace the .save with the custom save file. (You’ll have to change the name of it to whatever one you’re using. Ex: I used blue tears so I renamed it to “Pokemon Blue.sav”). After that, it should work.

So I've run into a strange issue with buried alive. It started after I beat him. The sprites of either Red or Buried Alive are corrupted (as if Missingno shenanigans are happening), sometimes the sprites of the opposing Pokemon don't show up, and the game crashes every time I try to switch Pokemon when Buried Alive wants to send out White Hand. I've tried multiple times to reupload the save file to my cartridge, and the same issues happen any way. I've tried making a new save file, and the cartridge seems to be behaving completely normal (no corruptions for either wild Pokemon or Trainer battles). I try overwriting the Buried Alive save file and reuploading it again, but still the same issues pop up. Have you ever come across this issue before? Did the game crashing upon defeating Buried Alive corrupt the ROM somehow?

ah, heck. it didnt corrupt the ROM (thats physically impossible for it to do), but it absolutely couldve corrupted SRAM (the block of memory where the save file is stored, and thus all of the custom sprites and code). its not unheard of for a game crash to overwrite whatever bank of SRAM is currently open, and i guess i forgot to close it before crashing the game. thats on me.

if youre familiar with a youtuber named "TheZZAZZGlitch", im actually repurposing some code from their scrapped 2020 april fools event. what that code does, is it basically can take asm code thats written almost the same way as you would write if you were making a rom hack, and, instead of compiling it to a rom, compiles it into a save file (thats not completely right... a "base" save file is also provided, and the code only overwrites boxed pokémon data). so with this setup, you end up with a regular save file that just happens to have some very specific weird pokémon in the PC box. in order to run that data as code, there are two separate techniques. i think this video ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/n2PbZKN_q7uhhpY ) explains the techniques pretty well, but if you just want a summary: on one hand, you have the fact that all maps in these games run a "script" once every frame, unless the player is walking, in which case its run once every step. i can replace this script, since its specified by a 2-byte pointer in memory. if i just change that script to one thats stored in my PC box, then i can run that PC box as code almost every frame. the map script pointer is stored in the save file, so my code will run even if you save-and-reset the game. there is an issue, however, because the map's script is updated every time you move to a new room..... on the other hand, you have the fact that, in order to draw sprites to the screen, some code from RAM needs to be run every frame (there are technical reasons for this, but thats a bit much to get into right now...). since this code is in RAM (random access memory), and not ROM (read-only memory), im free to overwrite it with whatever i want. the bit of code thats stored in RAM is really quite small, but thats fine, since i can just encode a jump instruction to get from there to somewhere where i have more space. unlike the map script method, this code is completely untouched when you move to a new room. there is an issue, however, because this code isnt stored in the save file, so itll be back to normal if you save-and-reset the game.... so what do you do? well, of course, you have the map script constantly make sure that the sprite-drawing script is modified, and you have the sprite-drawing script constantly make sure that the map script is modified! that way, unless you manage to save-and-reset at the same time as changing maps, my custom code will always be constantly running in the background. as it turns out, the only way to save-and-reset at the same time as changing maps is to beat the elite four and get to the hall of fame sequence. thats fine for my purposes, since none of these stories involve beating the elite four. even if they did, i could theoretically replace the hall of fame's map script with one that shows a "fake" ending sequence that looks identical, but makes sure to keep the map script modified for when you reset the game at the end of the sequence. ...phew....... that was........ longer than i expected. i know i just made it sound complicated, but im really not doing much hardcore computer science work here. all of the heavy lifting was done by TheZZAZZGlitch and MrCheeze. i got the whole framework from them, and at that point im free to just mess around and make the game do whatever the hekk i want it to.

@@Cello2WC very interesting! Also is it not possible to add the staticmesh.wav to the Game Over screen in the Buried Alive screen? Is that why a reversed version of the Lavender Town theme is used instead?
@Cello2WC
@Cello2WC Жыл бұрын
@ProfessorCreepyPasta i had initially tried to recreate staticmesh.wav using methods typical for the game boy, using its two pulse channels, wave channel, and noise channel. in the end, i wasnt able to recreate the whispering noises in a way that i was happy with. of course, theres also the option of including staticmesh.wav as actual sampled audio data, similar to an actual .wav file. i could copy the sample-playing code from pokémon yellow (used for pikachu's cries). but, if you try to do this, youd quickly run into an issue.... the version of staticmesh.wav that i see most commonly is 1 minute and 47 seconds long. i can easily trim some silence from the start and end to get it down to 1 minute and 45 seconds. if you immediately go and convert that file to the format used by pokémon yellow's sample player, you end up with a file thats ~289439 bytes in size. you can listen to what that file sounds like here, but _*I WOULD RECOMMEND LOWERING YOUR VOLUME*_: www.cello2wc.com/secret/staticmesh/staticmesh-yellow.wav however, pokémon yellow's sample player has kind of an absurd sample rate of 22050 Hz, so i could easily lower the sample rate to smth like 8000 Hz and end up with a file thats ~105012 bytes ( www.cello2wc.com/secret/staticmesh/staticmesh-8000-yellow.wav ), or even 4000 Hz for ~52506 bytes ( www.cello2wc.com/secret/staticmesh/staticmesh-4000-yellow.wav ), although by 4000 Hz the audio is a little bit incomprehensible, even for distorted creepypasta audio standards. so how much space do we have in one of these save files? well, a single bank of SRAM is........ 8192 bytes. and i only have 2 full banks of SRAM to play with for these saves, plus 7016 bytes in SRAM bank 0 if i dont mind the data getting overwritten when a glitch pokémon sprite is loaded. theres also some space in WRAM that i can use, around 1024 bytes. i could probably find a little bit more space to use in WRAM, like maybe the daycare pokémon? but anyway, thats a total of approximately 24424 bytes. compared to these 52506-, 105012-, and 289439-byte files, thats.... nothing. and i still need some space in the save to put,,,,,, well,,,, everything else. so, in the end, i decided that a down-pitched, slowed, and reversed lavender town theme would work well enough for my purposes, and would only take a minimal amount of space. plus, i would be able to implement it with the game's own music engine, no fancy sample-playing code needed.

The intent with these is that you’re able to back up save data to your pc, but you can also, say, write custom save data to gameboy carts. Which I’ve done. it depends on whether the hack youre talking about was made using the disassembly or not. if the game was recompiled from the disassembly, then i highly doubt that any of these would work, since all of the functions and data would probably be moved around so none of my pointers will be pointing to what theyre supposed to be. on the other hand, if the hack was made by editing individual bytes of the ROM so that things like encounter tables and the layout of the unknown dungeon and stuff match the JP versions, theres a chance that these saves might be able to work somewhat. i cant really give you an estimate on what that chance is, but i think that there would be a chance. whatever the case, theres no harm in trying it out, just to see what happens, right? its always fun when things go wrong!

it doesnt tell me anywhere how to actually LOAD the save file. how do i do it???
@Cello2WC
@Cello2WC Жыл бұрын
that depends on what emulator youre using. on bgb, you can just load the appropriate ROM, and then drag+drop the save file onto the emulator window, and thatll load it. other emulators may have options labeled "load save file" or "load battery data" somewhere. if all else fails, closing the emulator and then putting the save file in the same directory as your ROM file and rename the save file so that it has the _exact_ same name as the ROM file (except for the extension) should cause most emulators to load the save file for you, the next time the ROM is loaded

Sorry to be so uninformed, but how can you hack merely save data in such a sophisticated way? Surely you’ve had to add various sprites into the rom so that they can be recalled, such as the backsprite for Blue, the buried alive sprite, etc?
@Cello2WC
@Cello2WC Жыл бұрын
while youre correct in believing that i need to add sprites into the _game_ for these save files, youre incorrect in assuming that these sprites need to be added to the _ROM_. the game boy has several different types of memory that it can access. there's ROM (Read-Only Memory), provided by the cartridge currently placed within the cartridge slot, and there are various different flavors of RAM (Random Access Memory). VRAM (Video RAM), WRAM (Work RAM), and HRAM (High RAM) are all provided by the console itself, and their contents are destroyed whenever the console is powered off. however, SRAM (Static RAM) is provided by the cartridge in a similar manner to ROM, and its contents last as long as the cartridge's save battery does. SRAM may be treated as if it were additional WRAM, such as it is in Super Mario Land 2, but because its contents may be preserved while the console is powered off, it is typically used for the storage of save data. this is what the .sav file created by an emulator is. it is simply the contents of the emulated cartridge's SRAM. whats important to realize about ROM, VRAM, WRAM, HRAM, and SRAM is that they all end in 'M', and that 'M' stands for memory. while these are different types of memory, and each is meant for something specific.... at the end of the day, its all memory. typically, ROM contains code and static data. however, code can be loaded into any type of RAM and it will run just fine (well, there are some technicalities about running code from VRAM, but....). in fact, the game boy pokémon games, and in fact _most_ game boy games, _do_ store a small piece of code in HRAM related to copying sprites to the screen. so to finally answer your question: code, data, graphics, maps, music.... its all just those good ol' ones and zeroes, and all you need to represent those ones and zeroes is some kind of memory. sprites are typically stored in ROM since thats all that gets written to the cartridge at the factory. but since i can just give you the contents of SRAM as a .sav file, i can basically give you whatever code and data i want for you to run alongside the unmodified ROM.

@@Cello2WC Is it possible to do a Pkmn Strangled Red recreation? or maybe that one Pokemon Team Rocket edition romhack but in the original pokemon red instead of pkmn firered? (Pokemon Red has every sprite for a hypothetical recreation of Pokemon Team rocket edition so you wouldnt need to add that many sprites except the protagonist rocket grunt's multiple back sprites and overworld sprites for said MC)

im working on strangled red at the moment, but im making it as a ROM hack rather than a save file because i dont think a save file would have enough space to store everything thats needed for strangled red (mostly because there needs to be new dialogue for almost every NPC) i havent looked into team rocket edition at all, but i think ive got enough on my plate for the moment.... maybe ill look into it later

@Cello2WC

thats ACE baybee!!! once youre able to run your own code (referred to as "Arbitrary Code Execution", or "ACE") you can pretty much do whatever you want!! when you say that the misfortune save file "looks like an entirely different game", youre not far off; i pretty much wrote an entirely new game engine into the save file, and then gave that one NPC an invalid text pointer that runs some code and eventually ends up in my new engine. thats.... probably why im running low on space in that file, haha. there are some noticeable limitations to what i can do with ACE.... most notably, i can't override any of the code that the game calls during an interrupt. this is why in misfortune, when there's a text box open and theres a sprite near the top of the screen (16:37 and 16:48), the sprite flickers. in the text box code, i wait for a specific line of the screen to be drawn, and then i disable sprites so that sprites arent drawn on top of the text box. i then _try_ to re-enable sprites before the console starts drawing the next frame, but because the code for the VBlank interrupt sometimes takes longer than i would like it to, i am sometimes unable to re-enable sprites fast enough. normally, you'd use another interrupt in order to handle this disabling and re-enabling sprites, but, as i said, i simply dont have control over that region of code.

@@Cello2WC wow… sometimes as someone who doesn’t do this sort of coding it’s easy to forget how truly arbitrary is ACE lol. like usually people just use ACE to do useful and/or cool things within the borders of the game’s engine but yeah i didn’t even think of the possibility of essentially writing a new engine and running it through ACE correct me if i’m wrong but i think it might be kiiind of similar in concept, in a way, to that famous pokémon yellow TAS in which they used joypad inputs to encode a data stream that is executed on the fly and makes it look like the game boy is running other games?

@Cello2WC
@Cello2WC 2 жыл бұрын
i think the reason nobody's made a hack for strangled red yet is because its such a large undertaking. these three stories were each only a few paragraphs long, and id be willing to bet that strangled red is longer than all three of these combined. not to mention the fact that strangled red says about the main game that "The story was different", without going much into detail, and goes through getting all of the badges, stated to be 30 hours of gameplay, in like 6 paragraphs... theres also a couple parts that dont entirely make sense, like how steven walks from lavender to pallet twice without any pokémon, and is stated to have gone through cerulean (you need one of either cut, surf, or fly to get to pallet from lavender and none of those routes go through cerulean) that said, i do agree with you that its a shame that no rom hack's come out for it after all this time. it wouldnt be possible in a save file like i did these three, not only because of scope, but because the story makes changes to the title and continue screens, and i only have access to ACE once the player loads the file. but i could totally make the intro pallet town section and everything after the champion battle as a rom hack, so........ ill look into it.

@@Cello2WC well, since it's vague enough you could take liberties, or simply ignore the "30+ hours gameplay and the story is different!!!" and just use the original kanto region and make some minor story adjustments and text changes and the rival's battles.

Interesting to see that even trying to make a very faithful romhack of this creepypasta would be nearly impossible due to the scope. I already know Reidd Maxwell's version of the game being recreated on his Pokemon Gamemaker engine is most certainly not going to have any of the kanto region gameplay and mainly only do the parts of the story that actually are unique to the creepypasta because that would require recreating the entirety of Pokemon Red which Reidd already tried for a few years when making his Cursed Black fangame, but he gave up as soon as a romhack was made for it.

I know the story of blue's tears Blue's tears are in Pokemon original story. Because blue is already beaten in Pokemon red/blue. And in the original Pokemon on the series are beaten by ash. And blue started crying and Professor Oak says to blue " You need to stop cooperating with team rocket". And blue tear the picture of team rocket and him. But then blue is not forgive red and starting murdering red and himself So that's why you named this game "Blue's tears". Am I right
