It's not even like the story was extremely complex or innovative, they were really simple concepts like students being bullied, the desire to have a challenge, and the want of a kid to have his parent. But all these stories were just told with so much sincerity under the overarching question: What do you treasure? It was incredible that a Pokemon game made me feel this way and I am tremendously impressed. Something I find immensely interesting is that the game itself kind of tricks you. They advertised Sada and Turo as the main region professors, yes. However, this is not the case at all. Honestly, given how the time machine works, using Master Balls makes perfect sense. If you're only able to send Poké Balls through to catch Pokémon (since people can go through but can't return), using a ball that is guaranteed not to fail removes a lot of risk from the equation. Less risk would make the system easier to automate as well (since the machine seems to be operating on its own continuously).

I know! The development and gameplay is...not well received, but the story experienced a major glow up! I was surprised at first just finding out the Arven was the professor's kid, let alone any of the Team Star stuff, Mabosstif's condition, and everything that occurs during The Way Home! Especially when Mabosstif was revealed in particular! I remember the moment he released him from the Poké Ball, that I had just sat there for a few moments and began thinking the worst! I was like "Oh no...don't tell me..." because I straight up thought we were going to have Stoutland 2: Video Game Edition happening! And in another timeline we very well might've gotten it! After it was revealed he was recovering I no longer saw this happening, but it would've made the game far more interesting with what could've occurred afterward! Before it was revealed why he was in his condition, I thought it was that it was an older Mabosstif on his last legs. It could've been a sad but realistic lesson to give kids playing it about grief for a pet (I cried thinking about my own dog just from the dark reality that could've been). I've actually already seen a one-shot someone wrote about this happening, showing a saddened Arven crying himself to sleep that night as a tombstone is seen in the yard outside...then by his window...then at the door (judging from the context, the writer made it that he became a Houndstone after passing away...a sad fate but imagine the heartbreaking reunion of Arven catching the now-Houndstone to use in battle instead). My idea would later become that he is about to march straight over to Area Zero to find the thing that hurt Mabosstif out of revenge, only for us to stop him (possibly with a battle). Arven pleads for us to let him go, but we won't budge. He blames himself for even going to Area Zero in the first place, feeling guilty as he thinks that it was all his fault that Mabosstif got hurt. We console him as he breaks down while on his knees, as he possibly cries into our shoulder, as Koraidon/Miraidon walk over and wrap themself around him to as reassurance; mending the two's relationship a bit in response. Later on as The Squad (I'm trying the think of a better name for the group. It deserves a special name of its own) trek through Area Zero, they pass the hidden cave near the 3rd station (the one with the waterfall in it and the location of Roaring Moon and Iron Valiant). Suddenly a small moment happens as we pass by the rocks hiding it, as we focus on Arven in particular. The mixed cry of a Mabosstif and Houndstone play and he looks around. "Did you guys hear that?" Arven asks. The group turns to him. "Hear what?" Penny asks. Arven turns towards the cave, the entrance still hidden to him, before shaking his head. "Nevermind...forget I said anything." He states solemnly. Penny and Nemona look to the player, even Nemona's density takes the back seat for a moment as she looks to him with worry. "Are you sure? I...heard about Mabosstif...he was always loved it when the two of us would battle, even if he always lost he seemed like he was always raring to go again." Nemona sadly says, looking down a bit as she remembers those times. Arven gives a sad chuckle, "He _did_ didn't he...thanks for that...Nemona. I...really needed it." He thanks her. The group then moves on to the 3rd station, everything going as in game (my headcanon is that in a fused world where the events of both games happen, both a Great Tusk _and_ Iron Treads are seen fighting one another until they notice the group, deciding to disregard their own fight in order to take us on in a double battle). When the fight is about to begin, the same mixed cry from earlier is heard, as everyone turns to see a Houndstone running up in front of Arven. Penny and Nemona discuss Houndstones for a bit, both curious to what a wild Houndstone is doing coming over to protect them. Arven comes to a realization and deduces that the Houndstone is his Mabosstif! The Houndstone cries out in acknowledgement, as Arven and the now-Houndstone fight against the Paradox Pokémon. After the fight we are treated to a cutscene of Arven in disbelief, wondering if it really is his Mabosstif. The Houndstone grabs his former Poké Ball from Arven's belt and holds it in his teeth like Mabosstif does in the Path of Legends cutscene. Arven takes the ball, holding it out to Houndstone as he gleefully taps his head against the ball, being pulled in. The ball shakes only once before a clicking sound can be heard, indicating that he's been caught. Arven tears up as he sends out Houndstone, as it rushes gleefully in to hug his two-time trainer, as Arven cries in relief in a touching reunion for gaining his partner back. ...not gonna lie, this version of the scenario (the part about the Mabosstif/now Houndstone presence in Area Zero), I only _just_ came up with while writing this. Like holy crap! I'm honestly impressed by how well thought out my thoughts for it were to come up with that so fluidly, and I'm not exactly a writer by any means (I like to think I'm good with creating concepts and ideas for things, but I guess watching all those story analysis videos, What if? stories, and reading those fanfictions have really improved my story-building skills), but I absolutely _love_ this idea! The story of Pokémon is maturing, especially with what happens during PLA and these games in particular, so I wonder if maybe a plot like this won't be too far off in the future; we did have the old Stoutland die in the Sun and Moon anime, and XY (both games and anime) had Lysandre straight up _die_ in his psychosis for the sake of his plans. The world isn't like how it was back when Pokémon first came around, and the norms have changed; it's time for Pokémon to change as well (now if only we could get some ARCEUS DAMNED VOCIE ACTING!! THEY HAVE NO EXCUSES IF THEY CAN HAVE GET AN ED SHEERAN SONG AS PART OF THE GAME AND THEY ONLY DUG THEMSELVES IN A HOLE BY GIVING IONO A VOICE IN HER TRAILERS AND A VOICEOVER FOR CLAVELL'S SPEECH!! IT DOESN'T EVEN HAVE TO BE _FULL_ VOICE ACTING! JUST DO IT FOR THE MOST IMPORTANT MOMENTS IN THE STORY AND FOR CUTSCENES!! For example: the entirety of the final act starting with the cutscene AI Sada/Turo uses the time machine).

@@legobrick1356 The pain never seems to stop, does it, boy? While yours had been physical, mine had been in the mind, and so so raw, like the burn of a flamethrower searing my skin. I wonder, what happens to Pokémon when they die? Ghost Pokémon exist, I suppose, but I had always assumed that had been the name of the type, and not a description of themselves. My gaze is out the window at your tombstone, tears stinging and making the stone marker of your death sway in the wind. If I had only been faster, I thought, but without you, I was not strong. I couldn't fault our buddy, as they had plowed through every obstacle to help us in need. In the end, you were already long past help before they even moved to Paldea. Tears were streaming down my face, in the empty room, of this empty house. I'm going to see my mother tomorrow, Mabosstiff. I wish you were there to come with me. You were always the best at keeping me safe and secure. Tomorrow, we go to the place where our fates changed, and I don't know if I will ever have the strength like I used to. One last glance at the tombstone, the blurred vision messing with my eyes and making the stone appear closer than it had been before. I miss you. "Arven, are you sure you're okay?" Nemona had asked for the thousandth time, and I was starting to get irritated. With a deep breath, forcing my hands to unclench, I nodded to the school president. "I'm ready to be done with this," If I sounded bitter, they didn't seem to pay it no mind. Ever since we were down in the crater, I can hear Mabosstiff cry amongst the screeches of the dangerous Pokémon. It was almost like a taunt, a noise that played in my head over and over again. Perhaps it was simply the trauma of being in this kind of place again, or maybe there's a creature down here that mimics your worst moments in life. Regardless, if I had heard it one more time, I might breakdown. As the group passed under the bridge leading to the underground, I found myself pausing. It had been here... I thought, looking around, on edge. The creature had descended on Mabosstiff and me without warning, and I didn't have a chance in saving my beloved friend. A bark. There it was again. The noise that followed me ever since we got down here. It pulled out my grief and thrashed at my body like an ocean crashing against the cliffside. It was so clear, and for once, I looked around. Nothing. No monster. No Mabosstiff. Tears were pooling in my eyes again, and I let my hair fall further over my face to hide the reddening. I wish I hadn't have come, I thought bitterly, I wish I had never bothered with my mom. There's no point. She has barely addressed me since we have started talking again anyways. I plodded on, the world around me fading into the background. I didn't bother worrying about the danger anymore. The rest of the group would protect me, and honestly, without Mabosstiff, I just don't have the fight left in me. "ARVEN!" A shout brought me from my reverie, and I found myself looking into the eyes of a Great Tusk, the screams rushing through the air and pummeling fear into my heart. I stumbled back, my friends footsteps racing closer to me. Too far away. The Great Tusks head was lowered. It was charging. Mabosstiff, I'm sorry. I couldn't protect you. I couldn't protect mys- Babarkwouou! A dog pokemon bound in front of me, a tombstone on its head, long fur, and boned face and paws. Ghostly energy flooded from it as it bounded straight into the Great Tusk, sending it skidding from its trample path and over the cliffside with a loud yell. The Houndstone skidded to a stop right at the edge, giving several warning barks before turning, its bony tail wagging. With a bound and a leap, it landed heavily on me, rubbing its face on mine. "W-what is this?!" My voice is shrill as I grab on to the dog to stop the affectionate assault, the others stopping around me as I finally managed to push the massive beast off of me. "It's.... a Houndstone?" Penny said with a question in her voice, the same question that was floating around in my mind now. Why was it here? Why did it save me? The Houndstone leaped forward again the moment I tried to stand up, it massive jaws clamping around the pokeballs at my belt and pulling away with one in its mouth. It was a pokeball I knew instantly, a faded, scratched pokeball of a Pokémon that has been with me for years. "GIVE THAT BACK!" I shouted with the sudden rage in my chest, standing and chasing after the Houndstone. The Houndstone bounded away easily at each attempt of grabbing the pokeball, and on my third attempt, I hit the ground with the thud after trying to turn too fast. I don't know when I started crying, but tears were flooding my face, and I reached towards the Houndstone with a whimper. "Give it back...It's not yours....please," I begged, looking at the Pokémon that just broke every wall that had been holding up my grief. It faced me, its head tilted, and it almost looked like it was grinning. I could almost see orange eyes behind the fur on its face. I felt my heart stop, and when its tail began to wag again, my throat felt swollen and my tongue too thick to fit properly in my mouth. "Mabosstiff?" Babark! "Ma-a-boss-t-tifff?" My words were heavy, and I felt sobs starting to wrack and hiccup my body. The Houndstone moved closer, setting the ball in front of me with an expectant bark of enthusiasm. I reached up, my vision blurring again, soft strands of fur meeting my fingers. "B-buddy, you're here..." I coughed out a sob tears and snot dribbling down my face and I couldn't care less, "Mabosstiff....it's really you..." Not a question, but my lifelong friend answered it with another bark and a wag of its tail. I pulled myself up to my knees, wrapping my arms around the Houndstone and crying for joy, for grief, for anguish, and for hope. Every emotion I have felt, the abandonment of my mother, the fear and pain of getting Mabosstiff hurt, the absolute, overwhelming depression of my best friends death, was all let out here. I cried, and cried, and cried. I felt my friends hands touch my back, a comfort, but that meant nothing to the feel of fur on my skin as Houndstone pressed himself close to me, giving me the comfort I truly needed. A lifetime passed before I found myself to tired to cry anymore. Slowly, I fell back onto my feet, sitting in a kneeling position, as Houndstone took a step back. Wiping the tears, I felt the gentle touches of my friends move away, remaining quiet, and respectful. "Mabosstiff, I'm so glad you're here," I was already tearing up again, but my best friend stepped forward, tapping the pokeball forgotten on the ground. With shaky hands, I picked it up, looking at him with a large, sad smile. "You need your space back right? Let's go talk to mom, together," I said, touching the pokeball to Houndstone's forehead, and reuniting lost friends.

I remember the day I beat Scarlet, my great grandmother had passed away the night before and I was playing to try and take my mind off of it for a bit. When AI Sada disappeared into the Time Machine, I audibly exclaimed “Wait, Arven!”, the camera switched to me and Arven, the piano started playing, and I completely broke. I’ve teared up many times in Pokémon games for happy and sad reasons, even cried from joy when I fought Leon for the first time, but this was the first time I’ve sobbed my heart out from pure sadness. They both have flaws that ultimately hold them back from being peaks of pokemon, but still have some great qualities overall in terms of gameplay and other aspects as well. Gen 5 was our last real peak IMO, hard to find issues outside of B/W not having the nat dex until post game. But still, that shouldn't detract from how awesome these games have been overall.

I agree. I don’t know if I would consider this my favorite Pokémon game, but it is clear that they improved tremendously from Sword and Shield. There are obviously issues with game performance, but the story is on league with, or even better than the stories of Gen 3, 4, or 5, which I consider to be some of the best games story wise. I’ll admit I didn’t have high hopes for the Team Star storyline as I thought they were going to be similar to Team Yell, who I didn’t like. But I was very surprised with the multifaceted lore and deep emotional complexity that Team Star had. All in all, the characters had so much more depth to them, and I think Gamefreak is definitely going in the right direction with the games now.

Sada/Turo are such interesting characters. They wanted to bring the past/future pokémon to the present in a misguided hope for harmony, that they let their son all alone with a pokémon who he associated with stealing his parents away for his *whole* life. And if you read the logbooks in the research lab it’s hinted that our Proffesor had an assistant/the professor from the other games had walked out on them not long before Arven was born, leading them to create the AI in there place. The AI’s in of themselves are really interesting themselves, as they might be the first I’ve seen where the AI is the one thinking for the betterment of the world and not theor creator, but still holding the desires of them. Another big factor is that Sada is smiling most of the time and kinda ruins it, while Turo is serious and fits more with the setting.

Legends: Diancie seems like a top pick for her to appear. Diancie is even made of crystals, perhaps carbink are from the great meteor that struck ancient pladea? Volcanion, Zygarde, AZ, the great cannon, it has far too much potential to be shelved for a later date. This would also be the absolutely peak way to reintroduce fan favorite gimmick, mega evolution. Done even moderately well, the game would be ball-bustingly awesome.

This story was an emotional rollercoaster! Loved that you get to journey and grow with not only your rival, but the box legendary as well. So this story is ABSOLUTELY amazing. This feels like is the best story we've had EVER! Better than if Gen 5 and Gen 7 had a baby, the baby grew up and took steroids. The characters are so amazing, and the way you see them grow is SO good! Though AI Sada and Arven have to be the most sad- And a thing that not a lot of people realize is that- AI Sada's dead. She needs to be inside the lab at all times or else she won't function anymore. When she goes back in time, she'll probably just cease to exist, as the time machine is a one-way tunnel for humans already in the present, and theres no Terastal Energy in the ancient past. She didn't want the gan to think she'll die, so she tried to soften the blow by stating she'll go on an adventure. It's so sad.

I think, if the power of the crystal is truly what keep her alive like she said, then she could technically roam more free in the past. Pokemon in the past is stronger because the power of their environment pushing them. If crystal in area zero is just the denser form of that power, then in the past of paldea that power must be in free form and scattered widely and present everywhere, at least in wider area. Sending herself to past is a way to free herself from the cage of area zero and have her own adventure.

I have never cried so much because of a game. This made me genuinely sad, Arven's story is truly tragic. I played violet and recently beat the main story, it really pulled on my heart strings. I don't know how it works, if in scarlet sada and another man was his parents or if his parents were sada and turo. If so, I can't even find the words for it. Arven lost his parents and nearly lost mabostiff. I am still relatively new to pokemon, I've been a fan for about a year now. I don't think I've *ever* played a better game and I don't think I ever will. Nemona, even if her story isn't very sad, it's still kinda sad to think about. She *always* had to hold back but now she has us. Obviously Arven's story. And Operation Starfall hits so close home. Yes, the game is *extremely* glitchy, but the story is better than anything I've ever played. Props to gamefreak and pokemon for this. And I'm sorry about your parent Michael, much love 💕

This story is so good and hits home so hard. I lost my mom back in June of this year. And her birthday was the day before this game released. So I took a few days off from work to just reminisce about my mom but also play this game. Played through Scarlet as well. And I've never related to a character so much before than I have arven. I lost my childhood pet back a few years ago so the plot with mabosstif hit home a little and then finding out Sada had passed away and that arven thought she just wasn't there for him all that time for him to find out she was dead. It really hit hard. I love this story, it's so good and such good characters. Initially I didn't like arven, but by the end I just wanted to give the kid a hug. The poor kid went through a lot. Easily my favorite character

Penny was abroad in Galar for a year and a half and just got back but even before that she didn't go to class due to constantly being bullied, Arven never went to class either because he was too busy looking for ways to save Mabosstiff, and Nemona only cares about battling.
