Voice acting stars Rachael Lillis and Eric Stuart -- well known for voicing ‘Jesse’ and ‘James’ in the English dub of the “Pokémon” anime series -- discuss the show and their careers, and respond to fan questions at their 2019 Fan Expo Canada Q&A panel in Toronto.
Rachael Lillis is an American actress, voice actress and script writer. She studied acting in Boston and New York City and has appeared in various theater productions, animated series and independent films. Lillis's voice work can be heard in shows including Pokémon (seasons 1-8), Cubix, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Revolutionary Girl Utena. She has also lent her voice to video games. She has recorded several audio books including Diary of a Fairy Godmother, for which she performed the voices for about 25 characters. Her narration and character vocals can be heard in PBS programming as well, including Nova, American Masters and Sesame Street.
Eric S. Stuart is an American voice actor, voice director, musician, singer and songwriter who worked for 4Kids Entertainment, NYAV Post and Central Park Media. He provides voices for English dubs of anime, cartoons and video games. Some of his most prominent roles include Brock and James in Pokémon, Seto Kaiba in Yu-Gi-Oh! and Gourry Gabriev in Slayers. His rock band, the Eric Stuart Band, has toured with many acts including Peter Frampton (1999, 2000), Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band (1997) and Lynyrd Skynyrd (1997), and has opened for Jethro Tull (1997), Julian Cope (1995), Hall & Oates (1997, 1998) and Chicago (1995, 1997, 1998). Frampton produced his album Blue, Dressed in Black.

Hearing Eric talk about 4kids' censorship has made me realise that it isn't fair to blame 4kids or other companies for anime censorship on television. The ones who deserve the blame are the television networks.

@@Gedi2211 Agreed, Eric has said in a couple of past panels when he talks about censorship that when they had a show to air during that specific time slot on a network station, he said the networks control everything from what the viewers see to what they will allow to be shown during that time. You know, Eric does do voice acting/directing 101 panels at some of the cons he goes to where he actually answers questions specific to going into that field and one thing he said during one of those panels is that censorship should be up to the parents and that specific household to determine, but parents just stuck their kids in front of the TV and never paid any attention to what they were actually watching. And that is so true, especially back in the day, the parents could care less what the kid was watching, as long as the tv kept them quiet.

pokemon worked cause of the variety of already established creative people assigned to the show working together putting their own perspectives style spins ideas into this fantasy world about monsters but still grounding most stories with human elements feelings thoughts or just making the humans the focus of the episode while the pokemon is an after thought just apart of the story not the focus...its never one person ruining or fixing it it takes a whole talented room of like 50 people to make a show good that lasts actors composures writers directors animators marketing teams all working together ...the dubs don't require as much thought since their just rewording the story keeping most of it in tact changing small bits and the actors just follow the directors guidelines..honestly the censors do the most work as do the new composures back then to rescore a show...

To make it something generic and relatable, instead of putting emphasis on being a Japanese show so that people here in the US felt like it was their own, and when it was redubbed in other countries they could incorporate their own food items if they wanted to.

Also, even as a kid, I didn't look at that triangular food with a blackish-green strip on the bottom and think that looks like a donut. Here's something to think about too: The Japanese don't do anything like that with our shows. They don't dub The Simpsons and have Homer drooling over donuts but calling them onigiri. They also don't do things like, say, hiding all references to American culture or outright pretending the show doesn't take place in America.

@@ElFreakinCid I believed they were donuts as a kid. My family would get powdered jelly donuts sometimes. I thought they looked a little weird but didn't think too much of it. I got interested when it started changing to other names, wondering what it was. When they finally called them rice balls, it made me think about how things get translated and it never came across to me that they thought I was stupid. And they made jokes about it being donuts later which I got, so yeah, it's not about thinking kids are stupid. There's an art to translation. Sometimes, you weigh exactness over relatability when it's a fictional story, especially if it's not an important thing. You don't think Japan does that? Let's take the Simpsons, which is not a great example since it's set in the actual US and is not aimed at kids, but you picked it. There are times where Bart calls Homer by his first name in English that doesn't get dubbed that way in Japan. Why? Do they think Japanese adults are too stupid to accept an American talking like that? Nah, doubt it. Probably just way too different to them so they tried to choose something more relatable like oyaji (old man).

For me replacing Jessie and James isnt that big of a deal. They sound similar and both bring their own into it. Im sure the Org,. and new voice actors are friends and theirs no hard feelings since its noones fault but who ever makes the big time decisions are at fault.

Regarding the censorship Eric stuart was talking about well this shows them I mean 4kids as a whole that certain shows like yugioh & even one piece aren't for young children so these censorships & edits are useless if you ask me lol why target those anime to young kids? They shouldn't air on those kids block where younger kids can waitch it lol right?? I'm sure older kids especially teens can handle this stuff right like violence? If I still correct on this certain anime like pokemon & yugioh air in the evenings in japan so it's funny how these so called kids shows needed all these censorships & edits 4kids did I find this ridiculous so yeah society rules can be dumb you know....

Honestly, the real issue isn't the censorship itself, it was the business practices and decisions that went along with it. 4Kids was intentionally trying to compete with FUNimation, rather than trying to work with them at all. Changing the target to kids isn't that big of a deal, but the fact that doing so kept the original versions of the shows from getting a Western release was shitty. 4Kids released a whole 9 episodes of subbed Yu-Gi-Oh. That's it. It was added onto Crunchyroll in 2017, but all of the episodes had to be subbed from scratch, so it's STILL in progress right now. The latest episode released as of this comment is the first episode of Yugi vs Leon in the Kaiba Corp Grand Championship.

@Steven Wade I'm saying 4kids shouldn't have dubbed those shows then that aren't meant to be watched by little kids you get me? They did a terrible job with those edits so yeah 4kids sucked at dubbing anime even if it's not entirely their fault the channels or networks as american say are the blame for this too

@@RecipeRepository this is what happens when the networks or channels airing these shows asks 4kids to make these anime "kid friendly" we get terrible edits like what we saw as a result it's interesting that it's not entirely 4kids fault with this so yeah as you said the business practises & decisions from the networks or channels in charge of broadcasting the shows were terrible then hence why 4kids did this. However, even if I cannot entirely blame 4kids for these issues they did still a terrible job producing these edits that's how many people complained you get me? I'm glad nowadays we don't have dubbed anime with crazy edits like 4kids XD
