I think it's less of a scam and more of an over-promise issue (except the quality control. That was awful to watch). Scents are way more complicated than smells, and you'll never find a single thing that smells the same to everyone. Even odorless things can sometimes have a scent to some people. To say that everyone will like it is... just not possible. In fact, it's actually bonkers to even assume that's possible, considering how scented candles NEED to market towards specific groups and specific countries. There's a reason why the same exact franchise/company (like bath and body works) don't have the same products in stores geographically far from each other. They basically can't, because it's not reasonable for a scent to be the same in a completely different environment with a crap-ton of other factors. They know this, and don't try to constantly over-promise the enjoyment their scents produce, unless it's a line or group of scents. A single product? Yeah, they try to avoid that whenever possible. It's just bad business.

That's what I heard is that some people who review it get absolutely nothing out of this because their sense of smell is too weak and Hipyo here gets absolutely blasted in the face with scented candles because he clearly has a strong sense or is just repulsed by artificial scents.

@@GodhandPlusOne literally the last sentence is "it's just bad business". I've put the blame Solely on the company entirely, from the start. Never even said anyone was misinterpreting anything. Hell, I didn't even talk about the consumer at all outside people having wildly different reactions to scents (the coldest of takes imaginable). All I said was that it was *less* of a scam. Which is pretty true- there are people who enjoy it and who never lied about their enjoyment. Its just their crappy marketing and bad business model that tries to overreach past their market in the most asinine way possible. I literally don't know what else to call it except over promising. It isn't an outright lie, as some people do in fact like it. So saying "you will like it" to a massive and diverse audience isn't entirely false, but it IS absolutely saying that more people will like it than physically possible (since no one will like everything). Which is a promise they can't fully achieve. Generally called over promising.

That’s also their job, tho. They’re not gonna say “try our product, it’s okay, but not the best”. They have to sell it, and they have. This video is ridiculous, tho. Seems like it’s for views only. I used Air Up years ago before I saw it advertised everywhere and it’s great, although expensive. Many of my friends and family have tried it as well, and every single one of them liked it, which always shocked them. I used to drink no water, now I drink around 3L a day. Genuinely. It’s a great product, and this is a video of someone who went in with a negative mindset, and the comments are of people who have never even tried the product. Just weird.

Totally agree ! I bought myself an AirUp after a friend bought one for herself and let me try it, felt weird at first (the bubbles when drinking and the scent feeling a bit too chemical to me, it was rose-litchee I remember) but I still bought one hoping I would drop sodas and drink more water. It's a total win on me, I bring it every where and refill it at least twice a day, I barely drink sodas now, like an occasional gaming night. Not all pods are good, and it really depends on people's taste I think, personnaly I love the wildberry, orange creamsicle and peach flavors the most. The downside is the price and plastic amount though, I feel like it could be reworked somehow...

I got it before it went viral and I've never regretted my purchase. As someone who has trouble drinking water (mainly drink soft drinks like Coke Zero) unless very thirsty (e.g. after a workout or in the middle of the night), this tool had provided me with a way of drinking water even when not particulary thirsty and actually being able to hit the "drink 2 liters of water a day". Not all flavours taste good, and some are stronger than others, but for me, I'm very happy with it. Of course it's not for everyone. I guess we just are the target audience and people like @flamingo are not ("Just drink normal water"). It _is_ normal water, just with fake flavour, meaning it's just as healthy as water, just easier to drink.

Hi there! Aspiring food scientist/sensory scientist here. The way that is bottle “works” is by taking advantage of retro nasal olfaction. Basically there’s 2 ways for the compounds for aroma to get into the nasal cavity: the nose and up the back of your throat. I think a lot of people have heard that most of flavor is smell, and that’s completely right, since retronasal olfaction accounts for most of flavor (in addition to taste and nerve sensations). So in fact, you’re mostly just smelling the flavors of these pods, though there is some taste happening. Now the problem with this bottle is that the people have different levels of ability to perceive aroma or odor. Some people just lack the receptors for some odors (this is called anosmia). The bigger issue is with the nose. In order to have retronasal olfaction, the nose HAS to be unblocked so that air can flow through. This can change with allergies or illness, and it’s why flavors are harder to taste when your nose is stuffed. The general population also has people who have structural differences like deviated septum. This really decreases your ability to perceive odor. Okay so two paragraphs later, what’s my point? My point is everyone perceives aroma and flavor with differing levels of sensitivity. That makes this product difficult to market, and the AirUp company have made really broad claims on how EVERYONE will experience this sensation. Also!!! Aroma and flavor is extremely hard to capture in a pod such as that, and that’s part of the reason why many people experience the “vomit” aroma/flavor. Aroma composition is crazy complex, and by producing such complex flavor pods, the aromas will definitely get muddled and interact in odd ways. Thank you for making this video because I’ve been wondering for MONTHS about this company and actual consumer opinions. What you’ve showed us a lack of sensory consumer testing before launching of this product, and it’s been supported by the comments saying it worked for 2/10 who tried it.

There's a lot of pods that don't do it for me but I enjoy coconut, forest fruit, and chocolate orange. It's not wow but like I said it does help me drink less soda etc so for me it's worth it.

@tetraasmr I absolutely agree, it's quite disheartening and some creators have gotten backlash, like Kurtis (deserved, I say). What frustrates me about really successful creators is that they often do the "begging", ie aggressively promote their Patreon etc, while _also_ taking any shady sponsorship ready to pay them. It does, indeed, not feel genuine, it feels like any greedy, cash-grabbing company out there.

Whenever a KZbinr I like promotes a product and says stuff like "I use this every day" I'm like... "Are you sure? Or did the marketing department tell you to say that so your audience buys the product?" On one hand, KZbin can be absolutely out of their minds with their monetization system and can even demonetize videos for no reason. So understandably, it has become one of the bigger/only methods of making money as a content creator, but I sometimes wish they didn't have to promote products that are actual garbage.

Heya, material engineering stundent here. The fact that the cap leaks water is intentional but it is executed poorly. There's a gap so when you suck water, the bottle lets air in, so you can actually suck the water without having to try and create a vacuum inside the bottle. Now this could be fixed with integrating a pressure valve in the cap but that would increase the already high price... though probably not by much. Still, I'd say it is an oversight in the process of making the bottle usable. tl;dr the leaking is intended but an oversight since the fix would be quite easy to implement from the company's end.
@jousis_

Maybe in order for the "smell pod" to work they needed a bigger hole (larger airflow)? Because all my cheap water bottle caps have valves. It can't be something you skimp on nowadays.
@SvenLaschinski
@SvenLaschinski 2 ай бұрын
I have one of those bottles. The cap is designed in a way that the air gap is pushed down to seal it. So would he actually have turned the bottle right side up, it would have been dry on the inside of the cap. Of course, if it leaks upside down without the cap, it will leak into the cap when the cap is unscrewed while it is upside down. Not to defend the design. Just saying, it works as intended and it does not leak as long as the cap is screwed on fully. Not into the cap, not into your backpack. Is it a good design? Well, probably not so much. Oh and btw. it also pushes the pod down when you screw it on. That way it does not leak water into the pod. Which also is something you probably would not want.

Honestly, at this point the more aggressively a product is being advertized through KZbin sponsorships, the more I expect it to fall somewhere between being utter garbage and an actual scam, and the less inclined I am to even consider looking into the product, let alone purchasing it. After Established Titles, Better Help, and apparently now Air Up, I've certainly lost the very little trust I had. When a company has so much money to blow on marketing that they seem to be willing and capable to sponsor each and every KZbinr that has built at least somewhat of an audience, something has to be fishy.
@ja_u

The video is pretty bad tho. The product is actually fairly good, Ive been using it for months and love it. I went from drinking no water to only drinking water thanks to it and while the first bottle has quite strong taste, the longer you use the pods the better the taste gets. It also doesnt leak, unless you open it upside down of course like he did in the video, but any bottle will leak that way. If you keep the lid on you can store it upside down with no problem, no leakage at all
@bunapapaya8
@bunapapaya8 2 ай бұрын
@@ja_uI'm not sure if that makes the video bad per se, it just seems that you personally had a very different experience with the product, which is very valid. Maybe I'd like it too if I tried it, who knows! But to be honest, I've always been sceptical of the concept, it's just nothing I'd ever want to use. This video validated many of my concerns about it. And it proved to me how products that are being hyped up through KZbin sponsorships are not necessarily all they're claimed to be, which I guess can be said about any kind of advertising. To sum that up, my point still stands, I have very little if any trust left in products and services that apparently spend a fortune on KZbin sponsorships to promote their product. It just doesn't sit right with me, and actually has the opposite effect of what those companies want to achieve.

She did a “trying things people wanted me to sponsor” video and genuinely liked AirUp so much that she agreed to do a sponsorship in a later video. Thank you for the review. Here is my knowledge and experience: - The silicon plastic straw/cap thingy doesn't fit perfectly and leaves a little opening every time indeed, but this has a reason. The slurp you hear is caused by this opening. And what it does is: It ensures that some air enters while you drink and that air comes out through the pod. So it's done on purpose. If you just want to have a bottle, you can take the whole straw and silicon top off and use it as a bottle, then it won't spill any water. - I mostly used it with soda water and coke flavor. To be honest I'm impressed. I kinda feel some light coke flavor somewhere. It's not like I'm drinking coca cola, but it 's a bit similar to sodastream + it's pepsi syrup. Is it expensive? Yes. Is it worth it? Don't think so. Was it fun to try? Yes. Do I like the (quality of the) bottle? Yes. Will I buy new (other) pods when I'm done using these? Probably not.

Sooo, I live in Japan and it's extremely common to get flavoured fizzy water that's flavoured only with scent here. I bought a bottle once, mainly because it was zero calories. I wanted to try it. I was surprised at how good it was and when I looked at the ingredients, I was flabbergasted to see it listed only water and "scent" - some flavours do have "extract" in them but many are only scent. I'm not really sure how they do it (the brand I like is "Wilkinson"), but it comes individually packed in plastic water bottles and are far more affordable. You can get the store brand ones for less than a dollar a bottle and those are also pretty good. It's a shame that air up tried to take something I find to be fascinating and actually really good (and affordable) and make it very half assed and extremely overpriced.

About air up tho, i never even considered it. It's a blatant overprice (edit: i purchased a steel bottle from a sports brand called decathlon and paid like 25 euros, less than half of the metal air up product) and hydration formulas already exist and are sold by much more respected beverage companies (biggest example i'd say is twinings tea, which is a quite renowned brand). About the leakage, bet there is a valve in it that got displaced or something since it's a necessity for the straw to work correctly. With a sealed bottle and straw you'll only be able to drink a bit before being unable or if you can go on drinking the bottle will implode because of negative pressure. Sure, probably not with the aluminum bottle but for sure in the realm of possible for the plastic one. So, I would recommend checking if there is a valve and if there is trying to get it back to it's original position. Look out for a rubber flap in front of a smaller opening, hopefully with support bars, grid or sieve under the flap/in the opening so the mechanism actually works in every situation and is not getting sucked in to the opening getting stuck there so water can leak. A visual representation could look something like this: ((+)) Imagine the brackets as full circles, the outer ones being the flap, the inner ones being the opening and the plus is the support bars at the same level of the openings edge pointing towards the flap. The flap needs to be in the inside, so whenever water is pushing against it, the flap gets pushed against the opening sealing it but letting air in from the outside, so far so simple. Last but not least, I'm disappointed fellow germans released such a scammy product since they can't tell me, while producing it in china, it has to cost that much. Take coffee pads for example, they have to be more expensive compared to this, yet they are not. Or do you think, coffee and the aluminum cap costs less than these caps here?

He explained how this product as advertised was not scientifically feasible with current technology, like not even close. I have a vague guess that these pods contain esters. These are compounds made from organic (or inorganic) acids that, depending on how they are changed, smell like certain foods. A lot of the time they smell fruity. Now very commonly esters are created using butanoic acid, creating butyl esters. Thing is, butanoic acid smells like vomit. And a lot of the time if you have made an ester, getting a good nose full of it will still give you that hint of vomit from the butanoic acid. This would explain the water also tasting like vomit, especially to someone who is sensitive to smells, and why most of the available flavours are fruity in some way or another.
@chemify
@chemify 2 ай бұрын
I think you are right. The moment I saw their first advertisement I thought that somebody has to debunk their claims. Something like "No chemicals, no sugar, no bullshit". They also claimed, that you just smell it, so it is not harmful, but healthy. I will remember that, the next time I am breathing something like diethylether or worse things in the lab, or benzine at a gasstation. I would guess that their chemical formulations are not proper tested for safety and human health either because it is no food, but only a "parfume" and you are not supposed to eat it. The worst part is the tons of waste their stupid single use containers create. I think this start-up should just be sued to the ground.

I agree with your analysis that they're made from esters. I can't speak for the US but in the EU pretty much everything has them in them in some capacity. Remember; they do occur naturally in fruits too. I'm very scent sensitive and these work just fine on me, although I haven't tried all the scents mentioned in the video (yet, I have some of them) most of them smells fine albeit artificial to me. We played with butanoic acids in school so I know personally very well what it smells like (and it's not a scent you forget), but for cola, strawberry lemongrass, honeydew melon, and chocolate orange that scent doesn't appear. I have yet to try the other flavours though and these I believe are second gen scents so maybe the first gen scents were just crappy? I will say that honey dew lemon does taste like a chewed out gum when the scent is at the end of it's run.

If a bunch of KZbinrs are getting sponsored suddenly, the best you can expect is an expensive version of a good product. Or just a mediocre or bad product with good marketing. If something catches your interest, look into the market, not just the brand being promoted. That's how I ended up with a $30 rigid wallet from Amazon instead of spending $50+ for a Ridge one. And I love it.

@10:00 I suspect the water bottle is leaking because you don't have a flavor pot in it. It looks to be an intentionally manufactured air hole perpendicular to the bottle opening to direct air through the flavor pod.

When someone says "chemicals" my natural repsonse is always "wait.. but is not like everything made of "chemicals"?"Is water not H2o, which are Hidrogen and Oxigen, 2 chemical substances? I know what you mean, but it's a very inaccurate way to express that concept 😂

If I had to guess, the gap where it’s leaking is by design to allow air into the bottle to avoid a vacuum. Like the hole in a bong, lol.

Probably between 5 to 10 years back, there was another product called "The Right Cup" that also claimed to trick your brain into tasting flavors via scent. The cups themselves had the fragrance built into them. KZbinr grav3yardgirl actually purchased and reviewed them for her series "Does This Thing Really Work?", with moderate results. I think she bought a set of five cups for $115, and each individual cup cost about $30. That product seemed to have worked a little bit better, but not by much, and the marketing buzz wasn't nearly as big. There seems to be a bunch of products that are being re-marketed to younger millennials and gen Z, who don't realize that these things were already around, and many were kind of known to have been failures. I'm surprised more KZbinrs don't Google to see if similar products existed before, and how well they were received.
I spent $200 On Mystery Boxes. (To Prove a Point.)
