An interesting thing about this theme, actually all three of the BW intros that makes them so good-TOGETHER, THEY ALMOST SEEM TO TELL A STORY. And it loosely parallels Ash's Unova journey. (I explain below) Black and White (that's the name of the song, same as the season) is about beginning an adventure and overcoming initial adversity and having a positive outlook on what's ahead despite that. (beginning) Rival Destinies (again, same name as the season) is about continuing on that trek AS A TEAM with strengthened bonds and a will of steel. (progressing) And It's Always You and Me (Adventures In Unova+Beyond) represents the triumphant conclusion of the narrators' (singers', plural) long adventure and how they "found their destiny" they were talking about here and in their success and resolution, find themselves to be closer than ever. (achieving/achieved) It's perfect! It's so wholesome how the three openings come together into one narrative that embodies the spirit of the show, the games they're based on, and the Unova region and real-world country it's inspired by. I can't say the same about the other themes, which, while catchy, tend to just spout the same messages of friendship, victory, aspiration, resilience, willpower, etc. just to get the episode off to an upbeat start without much substance or meaning behind them as a whole beyond those generic themes. All three consist of a male and female duet, although the artists mostly vary by song (and yet they sound so similar). These were some of John Loeffler and David Wolfret's last works on the Pokemon anime before being replaced by Ed Goldfarb as lead composers in Gen 6. These two were responsible for a lot of the original series and Advanced generation music and all of the themes from seasons 9-17, with just Loeffler working on the XY version of the OG Pokemon theme where Goldfarb made his debut. I still like Goldfarb's work, especially Stand Tall, but none of his themes really capture the grandeur of the Sinnoh and Unova ones. These were also the last to have full versions for the movies, excluding one extra verse of Stand Tall in M19. In Journeys, the opening was done by the somewhat well-known Canadian pop duo Walk Off The Earth instead of the anime's normal audio staff. And while, again, it's a banger, it's kind of an outlier for that, and because it's the only English theme to not include the word Pokemon (which means I can listen to it in public without giving away that I watch a show I'm way too old for and listen to the theme songs from for fun, yay!). I'd love another series of themes like this, but the one for Master Journeys is just another painfully average (and short) Ed Goldfarb piece that lacks the magic of some of the older themes. I doubt anyone will have the nostalgia they do for Rival Destinies here for "The Challenge of Life" or "Journey to Your Heart", or even "The Journey Starts Today" in five, ten years or so. If you want a nice opening Pokemon theme nowadays, listen to the Japanese ones like 1.2.3, Your Adventure, Alola, X.Y.Z (the Ash-Greninja tune), or Future Connection. They just sound GOOD, even though I don't understand a word they're saying (but I get the morals cause I listen to English covers as well). I'll always have a soft spot for the BW series, especially the songs, and now you know why.

I didn't have friends growing up I didn't. I had Pokemon. I had Pokemon. I had the purest thing--the thing that preached love, tolerance, acceptance, bravery, courage, perserverence. I'm going through a lot right now. I was raised on Pokemon. Ever since I was 3 years old. Pokemon--most influential game? Pokemon. It shaped me. It moulded me to be the person I am today. No other fandom I'm in had the power to shape me so positively. BW for all its flaws (I don't understand why it got hate--it's so fucking EMPOWERING), had probably the best shift from 'I' to 'we'. It went from 'I want to be the best' to 'there's nothing we cannot do together'. That shows growth and character of the show. Maybe I'm overanalyzing. Pokemon played a POWERFUL role--it brought me so much joy that it's UNBELIEVABLE how much joy it brought me.

Ash should have beaten Cameron even if Cameron brought his Watchog but his lineup was completely stupid. Who in his right mind sends out an Oshawott to battle a Hydreigon, especially an Oshawott who doesn't know Ice Beam? [I could understand Squirtle or Buizel since Squirtle was one of Ash's best Pokémon and Buizel knew Ice Punch]. If he had used Krookodile instead of Boldore, saved Oshawott for later to battle Riolu or Watchog, that would've helped a lot.

These full-length movie versions of the theme songs are phenomenal (English and Japanese alike). I've always loved rocking out to them before every episode and seeing these fun sequences like the Pokemon goofing around or an opening battle with the full theme in the background always starts the movie off strong. I know I'm not the only one here to say this, but I fondly remember seeing the Keldeo/Kyurem movie in particular for the first time on Cartoon Network and having it knock my socks off, and it's still a guilty pleasure of mine. Heck! Keldeo is one of my two favorite Pokemon, mainly thanks to that (the other being Infernape).

Even if some people dislike the B&W era of Pokémon, if it wasn't for this particular one, I would've become a fan as it was in its second year (2012) when I became a fan of the franchise. Not to mention Rival Destinies had begun airing around the same time, so hearing this really brings back memories of my childhood.
