Very interesting instrument choice for the primary melody. The only other Genesis game I've ever seen simulate mouth whistling is Animaniacs, Stage 3 intro and Stage 3-3.

Basically, whistling is a sine wave. the structure of the YM2612 is built on the modulation of frequencies of sine waves, hence Frequency Modulation. but if you take away all the modulation, you're left with just a pure sine wave.
