Chloe/Koharu.... so much potential wasted. I appreciate the idea they had with her "development", she's a character that is still exploring what she wants to do and I feel like overall, it's okay that she still looking, she's still a kid. She represents exactly what eevee encompasses, unlimited potential to be explored. The MAIN problem with her however, is that the writers never gave her enough screen time. Is she part of the group or not? It's like they didn't know what to do with her which annoys me because I do like Koharu, but it's so frustrating how they handle her character.

Journey's really just feels like there wasn't all that much care put into it at all. It feels like they're just making the show just out of obligation and not with any sort of respect for the source material. And it's a shame cause there are still so many Gen 8 characters and Pokémon that Journey's has never discussed once whatsoever. And I know I'm not getting too old for it or blinded by nostalgia cause I've recently started watching the Gen 3 anime for the first time ever and I have had the best time with it with a big smile on my face the whole time. It's the creators that are making the show so childish and it is super disappointing because all these big corporations in general think kids are so stupid when they are way smarter than they think. Seriously you'd think these people have never seen a classic Dsiney movie before cause some of the most critically acclaimed kids movies of all time take themselves seriously. Sure they have jokes but they aren't their draw.

I started watching Pokemon anime in 1998, but it was in 2013-2016 i enjoyed the most the saga, during Kalos. Even if gen 3 remains one of my favorite, nostalgia or biased memories or age has nothing to do with enjoying more or not a saga. Gen 8 saga literally "don't exist", it has no vibe. We can obviously see the lack of spirit in gen 8, it's hollow as hell. It has nothing to do with "it's a kid show". Even if children are the main target, Pokemon was never so childish before, at least between gen 1 - end of gen 6. And the show is ongoing since 25 years. I don't know if they think kids are stupid nowadays so they don't care, but you can put a kid show and make it not childish and still enjoyable. Pokemon lost his way. Also, the fact they totally "rebooted / split" movies from anime, which was linked during 20 years, shows how much they don't care anymore about the anime as something like a saga. Before 20th movie, we had constantly promotion during the anime, with something related, they totally dropped it. And Covid has nothing to do with it, it happens before gen 7. When you think about it, gen 7 has absolutely 0 story in movie. Zeraora was totally outside any kind of relationship with gen 7 in the movie. And the plot could have been situated in any region, we barely know where they were. Anime became soulless, franchise became cashgrab 100x worse than what it was before Switch, since GO, Masters and all those secondary games expended. Nowadays, anime is more about promoting events than spirit of a game. When something happens in Masters, suddenly you have the character appearing in Journey. When LA came out, you had this 4 episodes arc, out of nowhere, forcing it even more, and they totally dropped it after that. And for the games, what can i say... Do you guys realize they are literally offer trough wifi "current team" of Satoshi from the anime, 3 months before a new gen comes out, and we don't even know if the pokemons will be available? Just to promote the current tournament in the anime, which is totally disconnected from any kind of relation with the gen 8 games, or Galar, or else? I don't know... How not being disappointed by what the anime / games become at this point. At least, for me, it is sad.

So far it seems that Pokémon side media has more effort put into it than the main series has. I mean look at Pokétoons it has various short animations that appeal to kids but I enjoyed them just as much it was nice to see slice of life in Pokémon from the girl trying to befriend a slug a that lives in her grandparents house to the haunted school and the girl that befriended a wild nidoran not to mention the loony tunes esq one paying tribute to older styles of animation if those are more directed at kids and can be enjoyed by adults then why can’t the main series

Quite the contrary, the concept of Journeys is actually good in paper. It's a fresh take that a Pokemon anime is now trying to be more of its own thing instead of trying to follow the games. The anime would benefit a lot if it didn't stuck itself in the world building of the games especially if they are keeping Ash in the show the world should keep expanding to accommodate his story instead of having him do the same routine in every season. Really, it all comes down to execution.

I really don't mind the interruption itself too much .. maybe because I won't watch the rest of Masters 8 after Daigon vs. Ash anyway, unless they come up with the twist they should do. But in theory, if the execution wasn't so lazy, some interludes between the battles could make the event feel bigger. Pretty sure they did the same in other tournaments, and I always quite liked those interludes. Actually missed the spectacle around the tournament this time. I was even interested to see what they would do with the Koharu-Episode - until I saw it wasn't a Koharu episode, but an absolute meaningless and boring filler ... My bigger issue is that IF they apparently don't mind to cram filler and recaps, which take little to no animation efforts in between the episodes, especially with this timing, why not do this before and buy some time to actually make the Masters8 look as cool as they should?! (I know the answers, and they are not satisfying ^^)

First of all:really sorry that I haven't replied to your past comments, but sadly during summer vacation time I had to work some extra shifts, because most of my colleagues are on vacation, too. XD I haven't seen Ash Vs Daigo yet... But was it really THAT bad? I mean sure interrupting a major arc with filler isn't really that uncommon (One Piece, Naruto and Bleach did that on a regular basis) , but I don't really recall the pokemon anime ever interrupting the ash tournament arcs (aka what many people are looking forward to every season) for just some random fillers about basically nothing AND recap! If you remember during the Kalos league, between the Ash VS Sawyer battle and Ash VS Alain battle they had an interruption also, but this one was connected to the Kalos league by showcasing the aftermath of Ash VS Sawyer, some dialogue between ash and Lysandre and the much anticipated reunion between Alain and Sycamore and then we got a cute first meeting between Serena, Bonnie and Mairin. Imo interrupting a big arc really is not a bad thing, but only if it makes sense. (a "calm before the storm" type of deal) I always look forward to Koharu episodes, because with every ep you can at least expect some sort of progression with her and sure we got a lil bit of that.... But it took a useless first episode and a boring second filler to come to that conclusion. And I really like Koharu a lot, but sometimes I don't even know if the staff themselves know how to actually handle her. YEAH I also asked myself this question, ESPECIALLY when you consider the fact, that they already were missing 6 EPISODES thanks to Covid! So if you know that you already are behind the schedule... Why waste your precious time on something that is both considered lazy and boring? It really does confirm what many people and even the Japanese fans say about journeys: that they don't seem to have any kind of oversight of what they are actually doing.

Ah, yeah, sorry, I mainly meant episodes when there were no battles, and they focused on character stuff, but they didn't interrupt the tournament as a whole... but yeah, they didn't do it for nothingburger episodes like these ones, that's bs. Hmm, I might have missed the progression then ^^ I mean Chloe being interested in the Eeveelutions isn't anything new ... and if it's for all Evolutions ... yeeah, I guess technically it's a change, but pretty weak this late in the series ... Serena had recontextualised her whole goal at this point. I guess by now Koharu is more similar to Lillie ... whose arc, if you can call it that, I also never found really satisfying ^^ Yeah, it's a weird direction ... like, the Masters8 is basically what Journeys is about, it's the big payoff of 20 years of (messy) development, so the top priority should be to get these episodes right, even if you have to cut out stuff or pause the anime for some time... It seems like they can't decide if they want to target a new generation (like with Gou, the Eevee-Infodump now or the outro explaining weaknesses), or give longtime fans some long awaited payoffs... and now nobody is really satisfied. ASH vs. DAIGON (maybe spoiler for the result): Hmm, it was a mixed bag, as usual... some very solid moments (though again less than I'd want to see from Champions), some debatable, nothing really satisfying. My biggest problem is the way it ended ... I'd never have thought I'd get angry at a win for Pikachu, but once again Ash was completely outclassed until the writers decided that he wins now and pulled some new ability out of nowhere ... And I think since this time it was against a champion, I think it really hit me how they messed up Ash's development in Journeys ... because there was none, he did the exact same stuff he always does, with an all new team of boring Advertisement-Tools, but now it's suddenly enough to beat Champions. (I've actually seen people basically argue that he deserves it because he existed for over 20 years now ...) This time he doesn't even have any special Pokemon like in Kalos and Alola. He even regressed for a few episodes when he was moping about his loss against Bea. The show can call him Champion all it wants, but he doesn't deserve to battle and beat Daigon, and I can't stand to watch the series disgracing Cynthia in the saem way... don't care about Leon, he shouldn't exist the way he does anyway ^^ But yeah, I lost any interest in seeing this version of Ash, so if you could spoil me at some point if they maybe do have the balls to do the right thing and let Cynthia win the Tournament, I'd much appreciate it - Otherwise we'll see each other again after the post-timeskip epilogue with Ash and Serena, or to take this clusterfuck of a series apart in general ^^ Edit: Just found out the previews tease Cynthia's retirement, the result of their battle doesn't even matter ... fuck! this! show! THIS is what they decide to do when they decide to change the status quo?! They couldn't have done this with Alder instead of just axing him for Iris' sake?!

So this may be an unpopular opinion, but Chloe/Koharu has been worse than Goh in my opinion. Mainly because she hardly gets any screen time. For every episode she appears in, She disappears for another 5. It made sense early in the series because she seemed to be distant from both especially Ash. However, fast forward to now and things don't feel a lot different. She seems to be comfortable about Ash and Goh, but she rarely travels with them or support them. I don't really by Ash and Chloe's friendship in particular because they haven't interacted very much either. Chloe's character has pretty much been reduced to the Eevee trainer ever since episode 49.

In my personal opinion, even if Ash vs. Cynthia, Ash vs. Leon, Project Mew finale, etc. ends up being the greatest things ever animation wise and story wise in the history of fiction, that still DOESN'T justify all of the misfires that came beforehand (and OH BOY, were there many misfires). After the Alain vs. Leon "battle", I too have been asking myself "Am I too old for this?" (I graduated college last year ffs). I can safely say, no, you are NOT too old for this. I've rewatched episodes from AG, DP, and XY/XYZ recently, and even with the nostalgia goggles off, they still hold up. There is no such thing as "too old" for good storytelling. As for the future of the Pokèmon anime, I'm hoping that we go back to the artstyle and storytelling structure of the Gen 1-6 animes. It's very clear that this new direction is not working out the way they thought it would. It seems that by breaking from the old formula, they lost the things that gave the anime a proper structure. The Pokèmon anime really nails it when it has a source to grow from. If you ask me, SM and Journeys have the same problems because of it (albeit in Journeys' case, these problems are cranked up to 11). The anime would need a new writing staff, animators, and new directors that actually care and love this franchise, NOT just doing it for a paycheck, as well as no personal biases (Between Leon vs. Alain and Ash-Greninja getting retconned both feeling like it came from a state of passive aggresiveness, and comparing the Dawn and Alain returns as well as the treatment Galar has received in general to the Lillie return and Iris vs. Cynthia screams "Favoritism" to me, and I don't like it.) After reading some of the comments, I would also like to add this: I'm fully aware that the pandemic has impacted the production in a negative way, there is no denying it. But at this point, that isn't really much of an excuse anymore. While it does have a role, this all mostly boils down to the choices that the staff made (like all of the filler and ordering of episodes), with the whole Chloe stuff in the middle of the Masters 8 being a prime example of this.

I feel like the writing team got a little too cocky when they were initially developing Journeys. They said "we don't need the old formula anymore. Let's ignore this essentially already written story from Pokémon Sword and Shield that requires little to no modifications. We brought the world Champion Ash! We can do no wrong!" And so they thought a series built 90% on fan-service, 5% on Galar stuff and 5% on actual original story-telling would be better. The sad part is, we ARE too old for this! Journeys is way more episodic than any Pokémon anime before it. Why? Because they decided to aim this series specifically to a younger audiance. Which is really dumb, considering the fan-service they provide in the show is probably as old as these kids' parents. We recognize Gary and Paul because we grew up watching them. For the target audiance, it's the first time they're watching Pokémon. They don't give a shit who Paul is. Journeys doesn't know if it's a show for young kids or older fans, and that's its Achilles Heel.

The fact that they had so many filler episode in the middle for nothing is what triggers me most. Like, if they just need episodes to fill in a certain count, why not just spread out the masters 8 battles so they didn’t feel so rushed! Someone also said in another comment that it would’ve been cool if Chloe represented the other half of the Pokémon world that DOESNT involve Pokémon and just normal activities. It sucks there’s another unevolved eevee in the anime after theyve reused this plot line and the ep didn’t even have anything to do with Chloe and eevee and just ended in a plot point that was reached a YEAR ago

My problems with Journeys are kinda similar to the Problems i had with the Sun & Moon Anime. Too much Filler-Episodes, not much Character progress and no clear storyline. (Both Anime series also had some great episodes for sure.) The concept of travelling through all regions is actually a good idea, but the writers did it really bad in my opinion. Journeys was released in the time, where Sword & Shield came out. We haven´t seen much from the Galar region so far and the most important events like Ash´s training, progress, ups and downs etc. feels totally rushed and is happening mostly offscreen. Goh and Koharu could have been great characters, if they weren´t Flanderized that much. Goh only catches Pokemon with almost no training progress & Koharu only appears for single episodes to promote the Eeveelutions.

I blamed the writers and the producers for doing a terrible job in Journeys of creating Goh and Koharu who are the worst traveling companions for Ash, useless fillers episodes, pointless plot, and they did a poor job with Ash and his Pokémon. I can not believe that this is Ash's last adventure. It's sad Ash is leaving the Pokémon anime, a part of me is glad that he's finally retiring, and a part of me will miss him because he's a part of my childhood. Sometimes I think. What is he going to do now since his adventure is over? Also, they could have done a better job of giving him a proper send-off in his last adventure instead of making a fan service show.

Being unorganized is basically the regular schedule of Journey, i mean, this is episodic. If you have fillers 75% of the anime, with disconnected episodes between them (not even same place, not even same direction, not even same destination...), you can't blame if suddenly, they interrupt a tournament to put random fillers. Maybe it's more shocking here because of the fact this tournament made people forget what Journey is about, because they put some episodes being the following of the previous one... That's funny, in anime where they follow manga's path, when you have something like that, fillers interrupting current plot, it's because generally they have to let the manga take advance. But Pokemon don't follow a manga, it's an anime trough the year without any connection except... Games. And what is the purpose of the anime NOWADAYS? Promote games. And what was the games they promoted this time?... MASTERS. Yes. If you check it out, a lot of protagonists, pokemons, outfits... Is promoted in Journey for MASTERS. Remember when anime was something with soul and spirit on itself? Well, forget it. Now, you win with Z-move, you win with Dynamax, you win with plot armor, you win because it's the schedule to follow the path of the games. I bet you: -> Cinthya VS Ash - win with mega Lucario -> Leon VS Ash - win with giga Pikachu ... Then Leon throwing his hat, end of the game (sorry, end of the anime). Oh, yes, and then you have to complete Goh's purpose, so Mew encounter, catch it, release it. Yeh... What a wonderful anime we have nowadays. Sorry for that, but even if i keep only good things (there is, for example, Iris treatment...), the anime is dead since the end of Kalos. I don't see why people think Alola league is an achievement, it was win without qualification and overuse of Z-move to win, so nuclear win. And they don't even cared about related the "island tour" to be able to participate in the league. All those defy against island captains were not even necessary to participate. So... Yeh. At this point, Ash winning (potentially / probably) against Leon isn't even something to be happy for.

I agree with you on the recaps and Chloe episodes, but I am okay with Goh interrupting the finals because it does seem clear to me that they really don't want to resolve Ash's goal until the very end of the series, so they want Ash vs Leon to be one of the last episodes leading to the 9th generation anime (close to it). Would also make sense if the finals are days after the semi finals giving the Pokemon trainers time to train or rest so other story beats could happen. After all inconveniences are realistic even when you have something planned.

We need something, and if that something is in the nqext generation, that's good with me. Serena had a similar start as Chloe, but they put Serena in every episode and they showed in detail how she got to that episode 60 point. Chloe has been in like 1/3 of the episodes, and has hardly showed any sort of favoritism towards any path she's explored. Its just disappointing how they've handled her character all series, and the people that wanted to see at least something in her are feeling a bit defeated right now.

I actually enjoyed the Koharu recap more than the masters 8 battles. But that's mainly because I love Koharu and her Eevee and really hope that it'll evolve into a new form every time we get a Koharu focused episode. The masters 8 just feel too scripted to be actually enjoyable and the fights always upset me.

Gotta say I started up with journeys with rather high hopes and was basically kicked in the balls so hard that I don't even watch it anymore. When I did watch it I fast forwarded through every single filler episode until it got to some actual plot. I fast forwarded through 4-5 episodes in between each plot heavy episode. With how gen 6-7 did filler it was actually pretty fun. Like the mystery house episode from gen 6 and the pancake race and various others from gen 7 were extremely fun. I could barely watch almost all of them and resorted to fast forwarding to the end teaser to see if I had to skip the next episode. We're gonna need a watch guide for this anime 💀

Hot take I think I suspect Journeys will be follow a same mistake as how BW season did but JN being not going worse as how as BW did before. All is because of COVID-19 pandemic give the animators and stuffs a lof of hinderance of their production as well as how BW got a massive hinderance because of earthquake in 2011 before Yes, 3 FILLERS and it hasn't ANY relation to PWC Masters Tournament arc. I had consider 3 last episodes that out of arc as "This episode doesn't exist". If Journeys do not feature Serena (and her Delphox) again, I'll be mad. As a Kalos Gang/Amourshipping stan, I'll be very mad to see that happening if they do favor Goh/Chloe and favoring "Let's cater more children to see this" take instead of "Let's bring all Pokemon fans from all ages and eras to watch Pokemon anime!". You're absolutely right and I agree with everything you've said here...it is indeed baffling that they placed these filler episodes...(that went nowhere for Koharu might I add) in between basically what is considered the climax of any Pokemon series as a whole, the Pokemon League tournaments or in this case, the Masters 8 tournament. I honestly don't think that the writers of Journeys know what the hell they're doing when it comes to writing or the direction of this series...the filler episodes baffled me too...and I wouldn't have minded them as much if they gave Koharu even a LITTLE bit of character growth along with her Eevee. But of course we dont' get that here...and the Eevee recap episode was bloody useless in my opinion. Like what was the fucking point?! It went NOWHERE! This sums up a lot of what Journeys' problems as a whole...a lot of plot progression goes...well...NOWHERE. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Journeys as a whole...I just hate how the characters are treated, especially Koharu and her Eevee...I don't even care if it evolves...just do SOMETHING....that's all I ask... We're 120+ episodes deep into this Pokemon series and we still know nothing or very little about Koharu...she should have caught that Galarian Ponyta way back when...and developed more...not saying she has to know what she wants to do when she grows up....but just have some forward character growth with her....that's all I want with her....but I feel like we haven't gotten that much....except in the episodes where the Eeveelutions were present...but then it's like she goes back to being not important or something. It's as if the writers don't know what the hell to do with her or with this show in general. At least Goh is working towards something...even if it's vague...at least Ash is fighting in a big tournament for the chance to be the world's best trainer among the best of the best of the POkemon World...but what's Koharu have? A gimmicky Eevee that imitates attacks? That ain't enough to carry a story.... And my feelings of Journeys as a whole is a mixed bag. I like some episodes like Goh and Gary teaming up and battling against Regieleki/Regidrago and catching them...that episode is one of my personal favorites...it was a fun good time....and the episode with Paul before the tournament started was also a good time...and Iris v. Cynthia was good as was Steven v. Ash...good battles...even Lance v. Diantha was also fun....but we don't talk about Alain v. Leon...that battle was a shit show....I just really pray that they don't do Diantha dirty in episode 122...although I'm not going to get my hopes up at this point. I am very hyped for Ash v. Cynthia however...that battle looks like it will be a good time....however...I hope we get some better closure with Koharu and her Eevee....but at this point...I'm not holding my breath where she's concerned....and I'm a Koharu fan...I'm just damned disappointed with how the writers have treated her character.
