Small funfact: In Gen3 (R/S/E), trainer gender matters aswell! There, choosing May also ends up being faster than choosing Brendan because of a few reasons: May's house is closer to the professor's, so you walk less tiles When being spawned into Littleroot after leaving the truck, due to the different position of houses, a certain NPC gets unloaded/not loaded at all; this NPC could otherwise affect RNG, and you usually have to RNG-manip your Mudkip and an Abra. Although I'm not 100% sure if that would actually affect routing, it's certainly nice not having to deal with May's lead in the already hardest fight in the game (Rival2) is a Wingull that has three turns to Growl you while you have to set up on it, and if it does so at least once, it's almost guaranteed run over. The Brendan fight can set up on a way more managable and forgiving Slugma. May also recieves less NPC-textboxes than Brendan does

I Love how Pokemon Red speedrun is just under 2h long, but in Sword / Shield at the 1h mark we are barely entering the 1st gym
