I always assumed that Gym Leaders have loads of Pokemon available to them and they just alter their team based on their challenger's team. Such as in Gen1/3 Brock used just his Geodude and Onix against his challengers who have no badges, but when you challenge him in Gen2/4 he has massive Pokemon, as you have 8+ badges (this is also evidenced by local Pokemon being low leveled too.

they also explain that more in the Pokemon Origins Movie thing. Brock has a team of 6 but asked Red how many badges he has. Since he has none he just used Geodude and Onxy.

TIAMOTRPD This also, could suggest, that a trainer didn't HAVE to defeat the gym leaders in any perticular order, however, I do belive that would be the best corse of action because I don't see Kogan just using his Muk against your level 6 caterpie.

I like how Pokemon Origin showed it. He took it easy on Red his difficulty being based on Red's experience. He asked him right before the battle. "Do you have any badges?" "No" "I'll use these two then."

they must use different Pokémon and strategy depending on the skill of the trainer. I wish they do that with games, where you can challenge the gyms in any order and that affect the difficulty in the other ones.

They reference it in the Black 2 and White 2 games that the gym leaders have stronger pokemon but are forced to use weaker pokemon for the challenger's sake. I am specifically talking about Cheren and his conversation with Professor Juniper shortly after you get the badge from his gym

my god I actually thought when you mentioned the no level restrictions thing that you actually weren't going to reference Pokemon Origins and how Brock (and possibly all gym leaders) challenge you with Pokemon that are leveled based on the number of gym badges you have (btw kudos to you for mentioning that, I was impressed by that)

What I usually think is that all Gym Leaders have 6 Pokemon, but by seeing how many badges each trainer has, they know how many to use. Notice how in Origins, Brock says: "I'll use these two" and takes Geodude and Onix from a group of 6 Pokemon.

sigh...this guy keeps forgetting important facts we have gotten to know like that not just anyone can face the elite 4, you have to present all the badges to proceed and (while he said not to mention the manga, i think the anime is still valid) in pokemon origins brock picked his team based on how many badges his opponent already had... I think a little bit more research could have been done here to clean up his hypothesis and make for a stronger concept

I wish the Pokemon games would allow you to become a gym leader... like instead of doing the same old ten year old on a quest to become a Pokemon master and, in so doing, save the world... What if you were a bit older... having already gone on your quest, but put Pokemon battling aside a few years back... now your local gym is holding a contest for a new leader and you decide to get back into the game. In order to do so, you have to recertify by getting all the badges again, raising a new team, picking a specialty, and so on... or at least have that as a post-game option, you know? And then you can work your way to being in the elite four.

What if that is why he can't learn new attacks (you reference that in your other videos) and what if the reason he works so hard for geovoni is because he will restore his body back to being a human if he catches a good Pokemon for him?

In Pokemon Black and White 2, Cheren directly references that he would have won if he were allowed to use his real pokemon. Meaning that there are the trainer's pokemon and the gym's pokemon. And it also shows that a person has to do something great to be able to qualify to be a gym leader, if there is a space open.

i think that the level of the pokemon is based on how many gym badges the trainer has, lots of examples can be brought up like for instance when Cheren became a gym Leader in B&W 2, he used weaker pokemon like Lillipup but later on when you can fight in the PWT he has his Stoutland again.
@ProtoMario
@ProtoMario 11 жыл бұрын
That is not true, because if you use gameshark codes, or in Gen 1 Kanto you can chose which gyms to challenge later on. You do not even really need to challenge Erika, Sabrina, or Koga first to defeat the 3. If you can make it to Blaine too you do not need any badges to challenge.

I still think (cus I meantioned this in the Elite Four Theory) that if you become a champion in the earlier years of your journey, you meet a requirement to become a gym leader later on when a spot opens up and you meet other requirements and qualifications, explaining Blue (also Blue is Prof. Oak's grandson so his inherent genius is a pass to his ability to be a gym leader so young and not have to have a type specific gym). The anime "Origins" helps support the idea that gym leader have different level Pokémon for different trainers. Also, the actual anime supports this too with Falkner being able to battle Ash's high level Charizard and Pikachu with a high level Pidgeot but Chikorita faced a low level Hoothoot, all while being the first gym. If a rookie trainer had to go up against a Pidgeot as a first gym then their dreams of being champion are crushed right off the back. Champions can be anyone who was champion in the past and if this theory that I've already explained is correct it would explain why Wallace from the Sootopolis City Gym in Hoehn was able to become Champion out of the blue. And once a Gym Leader as reached a certain level in their career then they can be requested to take over as an Elite Four member like Koga and who's to say there weren't other Elite Four members in the past because Lorelei and Agatha got replaced and Flannery of Lavaridge Town's gym says her grandfather used to be a member of the Elite Four.

@kommo1 9 жыл бұрын
I think that one requirement is to have a broad range off different level pokemon. They look at the number off badges the challenger has and choose accordingly. You also have to consider that they may even battle several trainers a day, which would be impossible if they only had the few pokemon we see during the matches. Going by that the gym battle against Giovanni would have been a lot different, if he had been in his gym when Red there for the first time.

If you watch origins you will clearly see brock choose 2 of hisbpokemon when red says he has no badges yet. This would mean tjat brock and by exstention all leaders do indeed have stronger pokemon , but choose which to use depending on the challenger. depending where you live brock could be the 1st gym you visit or the 8th :).

I've seen a couple comments basically saying the same thing, it was even briefly mentioned in the video. But all Gym leaders, even the E4 and Champion are trainers who went on a journey one way or another. So it makes sense that they've all caught multiple pokemon. So when they are challenged they have to use the pokemon at their disposal equal to the challengers level. So it is obvious that they all have their own "main" team that they've used on their original journey. This can be proven true, that they do have multiple pokemon, in every game when you re-challenge the league and they have pokemon 20 levels higher. As well as in gen two when you challenge the kanto gyms, whom have higher levels or equal to the league. Lastly, as to how one becomes a league member or a gym leader. lets start with the league, I believe when a challenger takes the challenge and becomes the new champion the old champion becomes E4 number 4, number 4 becomes 3 and so on. I.E. They get bumped down, and the first member gets kicked off. As seen in gen 1 where Blue is the new champion and Lance is bumped down. Now for the gyms, well, this is merely speculation, however gym leaders are the kicked off league members or challengers who failed. Though they failed they demonstrated potential, enough to become a gym leader. And old league members whom are already known to be strong, also apply to this rule.

The vietnamese and egyptian names for cats, is mao. So it's more than likely that they were named for what they say rather than them speaking what humans call them. Think about it, dogs don't go around going "do do dog" But that's only in the anime. It wasn't until recently that the main games had any pokemon say their own name (Pikachu), they always had cries. So it probably depends on which you're basing it on, in the anime it was probably due to what the pokemon said, while in the games it was more than likely names given to the pokemon by humans since they don't say their own names and just make sounds.

I have a theory, it is a counter to the digital one. my thory that the pokeballs shrink the pokemon not nessisarily convert them into data and that the light is a transportation beam. this comes form the early concept art and the manga which is the world more like what the creators intended rather than the kid pleasing money hungry anime. as u can see in the manga the pokemon can see through the actual pokeball top. ths goes to the pc system aswell where in the anime the pokemon went to professor oak not on an actual pc. ass bill made the pc storqage transport system u see in the manga more about it. its more of a transport rather than data storage, same with the pokemon ep where nurse joy has to send the pokemon to another centre, rather thn having all the pokeballs in a data storage device. so simply the pc system is just a user interface and the pokeballs and mokemon are sent to respective professors or stored in health and food providing storage containers.

I agree with Luke. In the anime, meeting someone with badges is a big deal, so beating a gym leader isn't easy. And you, the player, pay a fee if you lose, of course. Aside from that, they're probably financed to some degree by the pokemon league, but some also have side jobs (Blain runs a resort, Wake=pro wrestler, Viola=photographer, etc.).

I do agree with you in mentioning about Brock, in Pokemon Origins, choosing Pokemon of a certain level depending on the trainer's skill with Pokemon. I also believe it depends on where the trainer lives from city to city. There's also the fact someone could become a gym leader by taking their gym leader parent's position. I think one of the requirements is that this person has to be a pokemon trainer with the training and experience to become one. Reasoning for being a gym leader is also important because of the responsibilities it includes from being a gym leader. I don't think a trainer can be a gym leader from having no skills or level of training at all. Level represents experience, gym badges represent skill, and knowledge you need to know about Pokemon are required. Knowledge can come from the Pokemon schools shown in the game. Green probably got this knowledge, since he does have a pokedex and studied under Professor Oak. That's why he was able to become gym leader. If a gym leader doesn't have one of these, then it's not going to be a good test for a pokemon trainer to go against, if said trainer has 5 badges and the gym leader has the skill of a one gym badge trainer.

From what I know, Gym leaders take over from their father / mother / brother / sister / mentor. You pass down the title of gym leader to someone you think is worthy. Also in pokémon origins it shows Gym Leaders having multiple pokémon, that they choose depending on the level of their opponent. Their goal is to make the fight fair, not pick level 100's and decimate all foes.
@Usagizaka46

The overall task of being a Gym Leader, which I think I read in PKMN D/P, was to teach young trainers about Pokémon and to test those who challenge the gym. Brock does this very well in Pokémon Origins. Some leaders clearly get tired of that over time. Like Volkner. Being. Gym Leader is both rewarding and tiring we can see.

I believe it is explained in Pokemon black2/white2 that gym leaders don't use their own pokemon. In origins, it shows Brock and Giovanni have pokemon to choose from. I believe the pokemon a leader uses depends on how many badges you have (say you have no badges, Brock uses level 12 geodude, 8 badges Brock has a level 45 Golem)
@shannonrichnak5769

Well if you watch the pokemon origins anime it shows that when red challenges Brock, brock asks red how many badges he has then Brock says " then I'll just use these two" or something like that. So it appears that it depends on how many badges the trainer has and that would determine of the leader would use their strongest pokemon.

I think there's more than 8 gyms per region. It's probably just required to have 8 badges to face the e4 and champion . Also, I think there are more to the gym leaders. They probably have to beat the elite 4 and have to have at least 2-3 teams to use based on the challengers number of badges. That makes the most sense to me.

requirement 1: you must have competed in AT LEAST YOUR region's Pokemon Gym challenge. you dont have to BEAT it, just TRY. requirement 2: you must have a current leader to "recommend" you, or to vouch that they believe ud make a good Leader. #3: you must prove you are good at battling by battling in front of the other 6 (not including the one your battling.) and #4: you must be a good teacher.

My question has always been "Do you have to challenge the gyms in order"? I mean say you're an NPC from the Unova Region (the one I know best since it's the only one I've played), and you live in Icirrus City, where you would get your SEVENTH Gym Badge, the Freeze Badge. We know from the preschooler trainers that a Pokemon trainer doesn't have to start with one of the three starters. This is also true in the anime, since Ash himself starts with Pikachu. So this means a person wishing to become a trainer doesn't HAVE to go see their regional professor to get started. So my question is, even though you're from Icirrus City, do you have to go all the way back to Striaton City to get the Trio Badge, or can you just challenge Brycen first? Do all of the Gym Leaders have Pokemon that suit the different levels? You can re-challenge the gyms in certain games (though not the Unova ones), and they're levelled up, even the first gym. So do the Gym Leaders all have ~50 different Pokemon at different levels for challenging trainers of different levels? Or would you have to somehow get your way to Striaton City, which is clear on the opposite side of the region from Iccirus, to challenge the gyms in the order the badges appear in a badge case/wallet? Or would you have to walk all the way back to the first town, Nuvema Town, to talk to Professor Juniper? I mean Iccirus City might not be the furthest town away from Striaton City in terms of actual, direct distance, but you'd have to pass through the most towns to get there (five if you take Route 7 first, seven if you take Route 8). You can't fly there unless your Pokemon knows Fly, because the planes in Mistralton City are for cargo use, not people, and Skyla doesn't have the time to fly you there with one of her Pokemon. So as an NPC or an anime character I guess, do you have to challenge the gyms in order? And speaking of anime gym leaders, who takes over while gym leaders are out and wandering the region with Ash? And another question, or rather, theory: the Starter Town is always so small because only people who are Chosen can live there. I mean there's usually no more than what, three houses?

Well, thank you for that information, but I never asked about starters, since I know already from the anime and from Pokemon Yellow AND from all the random NPCs you don't have to start with the three Starters. I asked about the Gyms and the order they're challenged in and if you had to go all the way back to the first town to talk to the Professor so you can get a Pokedex and a trainer's licence and stuff.

Ellie F. I don't think it matters which gym you battle first. At least, not in the anime. In the games, it is just how they set it up.
@MBTepe

I think you can simply challenge the gyms any order you want. There's a specific order for each region in the games because that's just how they set the games. But even in the games you can sometimes skip the gyms until the league so there's no order at all, because no gym leaders want you to have any other badges in order to challenge them. I believe gym leaders have many pokemon with different levels so they can have a balanced battle with trainers with different levels. Brock specifically stated this in the origins and I am almost positive that Claire said that the battle the battle supposed be tough because it's Ash's eighth Johto gym battle. What I believe is there are a gym for each types in every region but you challenge random eight in every game because there are many towns and cities that you don't visit (just look at the Hoenn map) Kanto and Johto share their league, that's why Johto has the missing gyms. That means there is a Fairy and Dark type gym somewhere in Kanto/Johto but we just did not visit that city so far. So, yes, you can challenge the gyms in any order you want. A gym leader is supposed to give you a proper challenge, so if you were a trainer from Icirrus city and challenge the Icirrus city as your first, Brycen would use lower leveled Pokémon. Because it would make no sense if you think that almost every NPC in the games has more powerful Pokémon than Brock or Faulkner etc. They choose weaker Pokémon because you are weak. Their job is not to crush your team but to teach you. That's why they have better teams in rematches, because you are a better trainer and they can use their best Pokémon. They all have powerful Pokémon. Just look at their teams in Pokémon World Tournament.

M.B. Tepe Oh, I suppose that makes sense XD I'm only just now re-working my way through the anime (I actually *just* saw Clair's battle against Ash- she remarks that the battle is supposed to be tough, yes) and I don't think I saw much past Master Quest when I was little, since I don't really remember much about May and I don't remember Dawn at all. I've also only played White where they railroad you into challenging the gyms in the specific order presented and where the only people you can have a rematch with are the Elite Four. I'm still fairly new at actually playing Pokemon (never had a Gameboy or any gaming console until I was in high school, and I didn't actually play any Pokemon games until I think last year or so), so my actual knowledge is very limited to just White and what I've seen in the anime. Thank you very much for your help :)

There was made a few Pokemon OVA's where they hop through the story of Pokemon Generation 1. When Red challanges Brock, Brock asks Red if this is his first Gym Leader encounter. After Red answered with yes, Brock choose specific Pokeballs (with onix and geodude) That could mean, that they have different Pokemon for the amount of GymBadges you collected. (In the games it is programmed and so on, but maybe it is thought to be like this :P) [sry for bad english, it isn't my native language ^^']

Interesting theory, I think for a Gym leader to be a gym leader firstly you have to prove you are actually a compitant and strong fighter, please note I am ignoring level of gym pokemon just because this could be prepared earlier and as seen in origins perhaps choice is made, Also you have to prove you have the knowledge and are willing to teach. those who want to fight but not teach can't be gym leaders,

Manga (Pokemon Adventure First Generation) explanation it's better; a gym leader have to take care of the city where he/she belong. The better example: Erika, she was like a goddess for Celadon citizen. There was a rivalry between first eight, that was more interesting. ;)

Imagine if gym leaders, elite four members, and champions were to get paid for what they do, win or lose? Also, in regard to the two pokemon left aside, is that why when you rebattle gym leaders in compatible games, new pokemon are added in (may have been those they left out the first time)?

yeah, this reinforces the idea that the gyms are actually doable in any order, and tends to be done with whichever one is closest or most accessible, which is backed by the fact that the first gym is gen 1 is actually empty forcing you to ignore it for the time and the fact that in the anime gary had ten badges even though only eight are needed. (though this is argued by your father in gen 3, though it could be that he really wanted to try and make you work for it, being his kid and all). and the idea that each gym has certain pokemon of certain levels per the number of gym badges you have was touched on in the video above, though not really fleashed out all that much in my opinion.

My theory: More then likely, Gym Leaders are chosen as trainers that specialized in one type of pokemon, for starters. Let's just say that I specialize in Electric Type. I own 23 assorted Pokemon in my PC and on hand, and of them, 19 are Electric. These trainers also have LARGE amounts of success, but not 'Champion Level' success is not needed, just makes you a better looking candidate. Let's say that across Kanto, I've earned all the badges and was able to beat 2 of the Elite 4 members. The current gym leader of this type sees the success this person has had, and realizes that with the skill set, they could be a truly good gym leader. They offer the trainer some sort of long-lasting apprenticeship. The trainer agrees, and while the current Gym Leader instructs them on ALL the little things for that particular type, he/she also works in an elemnt of humility and respect. Helps and teaches the apprentice the concept of choosing the lower, weaker pokemon to give the up-and-comers a chance, but also instructs them on how to use their skills to keep themselves relevant despite using lower-powered pokemon. Not necessarily all gym-leaders may follow this advice though, and they might still use powerful pokemon just for the sake of it. (cough Milltank cough). When the current Gym Leader either dies, gets appointed to Elite 4 status through whatever way, or retires/goes to a new occupation, the apprentice takes over the roll. Of course, this system could have some changes. Some gym leaders might have pre-selected a person or group of people, such as children, realtives, or family friends.

My impression was always that the Gym Leader is the officially recognized strongest trainer of their city or town. As far as type is concerned, I don't think a Leader is bound to use a certain type, but rather the Leader determines the particular focus of their Gym; e.g. the Pewter Gym is a rock-centered Gym because Brock is a rock-type trainer, not vice versa. As far as becoming Leader, my assumption has been that to become a Leader, you have to beat the current Leader while being an official _member_ of that Gym. That's why none of the player characters ever become Leaders after beating them. But if, say, one of the various trainers serving under that Gym were to challenge and beat the Leader in an official match, he/she would be the new Leader and the former Leader would become a disciple trainer until he/she can win back the title.

random theory. in the original games there was only one eevee correct? what if bills eevee was the one eevee that brought the eevee population to be brought back up to a point where eevee can be now found in the wild. after all a long time has passed since then and it would make a lot of sense if red or blue (if blue got one as well) were responsible in helping the eevee population not become extinct.

Blue is a mixed type to avoid double typing. After fighting the the 8 Johto Gyms, the Elite Four and 7 of the Kanto Gyms, you have battled every type except Ground which should be Blue right? While it fits type wise, it would be strange for a former champion to drop his team, and use all Ground-Type. Plus there is a bonus to a Mixed-Type Gym. A Pokemon master should be able to best the expert of every type, as well as a trainer with diverse adaptive skill.

Pokemon evolve in trades because the electric fields they are exposed to induces the evolution. This electric field is found in nature but that is rare, that is why in the anime those pokemon can be found in the wild (and in game in the case of Steelix). Slowpoke doesn't follow the same logic in game and in the anime, he does as he wants.
