My theory: His sickness had nothing to do with breathing or clean air. When you first meet him, he seems to have no trouble breathing. No coughing, wheezing, etc. But the kid's very timid. Going through school, I saw a lot of timid kids get picked on and bullied, and by the end of highschool, a good number of them had depression, some of them were going to weekly therapy. I think this is what happened to Wally. I think once he got his first pokemon, it lit a fire in him, and he pushed himself to move forward and improve. He had a driving force behind him now, which explains his speedy recovery, and how he went through the gyms so quickly. Every time the player beats him, he would tell himself "I just have to push harder and get stronger" and he would. It would also explain why he's so thankful to the player for helping him get his first pokemon, which comes up almost every time you see him. You didn't just get this kid a pokemon to help him on his trip to Verdanturf. You gave him the initial push to get past his depression. That's my theory anyway.

I still think it's asthma. I have asthma myself (born with it) but most of the time it doesn't effect me. I can do what every else does, I did lots of swimming and was one of the top long distance runners in my year. However a couple of years ago after getting a cold it sparked it up again and I was very easily out of breathe and I could no longer do the activities I was doing before. That being said after a while (months) it eventually calmed down again. But it took me a long time to build myself up again. I do have to be very careful when I get illness that effect the lungs. Recently I moved to a city and I have found that the colds I get seem to effect me longer and worst than back when I lived in a town. I assume it's because increased air pollution. I do have trouble breathing in dusty environments, but if I wear a mask it will prevent the dust getting into my lungs. Basically I have a weakness in my lungs which I need to watch throughout my life.

It could be Cystic Fibrosis, a buildup of mucus in the lungs. According to a study by the University of Washington, it becomes a much more severe disease when you are in poorer quality air. One way it affects people who have it is by making physical activity harder.. Ironically, a good way to deal with CF is by being physically active, as it helps your body break down the mucus, allowing for more air to fill the lungs, allowing you to be more active, etc. Sources: University of Washington, and I have CF

What if wally suffered from deppresion? It would explain his lack of confidence, as well as why he would have left hoenn. "The air is Cleaner" could be a metaphor for "The Place/Town is friendlier and happier. This could also explain how wally nwas able to move so quickly, as pokemon would have got him out of depression and ready to start his journey. Wally's shy nature could also be tied to him having depression as he has not recovered 100% from his mental illness. This may seem like a bit of a stretch but it came to me and I typed it down. Walies "sickness" was depression. If you play the original games and talk to his parents, they talk about how happy they are that you gave him a reason to "live." This of course means that he was suicidal and when they moved to a new area, it was to start fresh and try to get Wallies mind off of his depression.

Wally was depressed. When you first talk with his Uncle, he thanks you for hanging out with Wally because he "doesn't have many friends". Examine all the conversations with Wally, from the very first one to last one in Victory Road. He starts off with sort of a stutter, and gradually gets more confident and loud. He always talks about Ralts, the pokemon you helped him catch. You're his friend, and his pokemon are his friends. He went from having none to having a surplus. That's why he gets better.The "fresh air" thing is just a loose tie in, because sunlight and clean air do raise serotonin levels which help aid depression.

You forgot to point something out Proto. Those red flowers near the end of Victory Road? Those are Red Spider Lillies. In Japanese culture, Red Spider Lillies mean it's the person's final goodbyes. Wally had a sickness, most likely with Lung Cancer from the Volcano exposure over the years. The game stated that he lived near the Volcano for a long time, and long exposures to ash can lead to Lung Cancer. Anyways, Wally made it up through victory road with the help of his Pokémon. After you defeat Wally, Wally loses Oxygen from the breath-taking battle, and behind the scenes, Wally dies from asphyxiation, or lack of oxygen that was caused by his Lung Cancer that was caused by prolonged volcanic exposure. Remember, there are workers in Pokémon ORAS. If ORAS was released in 2014, with the current world at it is today, then that's a lot of CO2 and Carbon. Red Spider Lillies is a Japanese culture for saying goodbye/the person's final goodbyes, which means he has died.
@XxJackFrostxX8 жыл бұрын
Protomario, I have something to add to your theory. In the manga we learn a lot more about Wally, but one thing that happens is that he has to bike to the top of Rayquaza's tower, just like we do in pokemon Ruby and Sapphire. We also see Wally using a respirator or breathing apparatus that he wears on his fact to help him breathe. Norman (your father in the games and ruby's father in the manga) meets you at the top of the tower and shows Wally that he no longer needs it since his lungs have strengthened by the hard biking he needed to do to get up the tower and by that exercise that he got in the thinner air as he climbed the tower. This will further help confirm your theory as his strengthened lungs would help him fight off and resist the chronic bronchitis you say that he probably had.

It could have also been TB, Tuberculosis. TB is a fungal infection of the lungs. And can be cured with cleaner air. Also the ash particles in the air around volcanos have been theorized to help clean out the fungi in the lungs that causes TB.

Many kids "grow out of" asthma, and training can reduce the severity of symptoms. Bronchitis would probably be less likely than asthma. If he were susceptible to contracting bronchitis, he could easily start his journey when it seems to clear up, but once he gets deep into an "unclean" area, he could suddenly get bronchitis and die. On the other hand, if it were asthma, the symptoms would build slowly. Think about it this way: You're perfectly healthy. You live at the bottom of a mountain. You walk up a little ways and back down. Every day, you go a little further up. It won't be very difficult for you to get to the top. Now do the same, but breathing through a straw. It would take longer, but eventually, you would be able to make it to the top. That's like asthma. Now imagine the same mountain scenario where you have no straw, but then, randomly, you need to breathe through a straw. Your body isn't used to breathing through the straw, so it will be significantly more difficult to ever make it to the top of the mountain. I have asthma. I went to Colorado a year or two ago and went to the top of Pikes Peak. There were people who noticeably had a large amount of difficulty moving around due to the low oxygen content. I was fine because it wasn't that different from what I was used to.

When I would stand up, I would get dizzy and couldn't stand for more than 5 seconds without feeling sick to my stomach and passing out. And its hard to breathe when standing. All you have the energy to do is lay down and sleep. Plus, its not a disease, its a virus.

He had a crippling heroine addiction. The main character, by being an exemplary drug-free role model, makes him change his life around in the middle of the game and give up the smack and devote himself to being a trainer full-time. He races through the gyms, eager to make up for the years he spent stoned on his parents' couch. Verdanturf town is the kind of place where rich kids would go to rehab. Volcanic ash is often used in fancy spa treatments at rich people's health resorts. He was sent there by his parents and the main character, as a childhood friend, was sent to check up on him and see if he was really getting better or still using.

My theory was that he was on chemotherapy, perhaps from cancer or lupus. Because chemotherapy lowers your immune system, you can be more at risk to infections from dirty air or general contaminates. That's why hospitals have air filters everywhere, even in areas without contagious patients. If he went there for the last of his chemo, was cleared as being in remission, and was back to being relatively healthy, he might feel like he owes it to himself to have his journey as quickly as he could, in case his sickness came back.

Could be Tuberculosis, We still have TB even with modern meds. so in theory so could the pokemon world. It was thought that dry fresh air would help dry out the moisture in your lungs (kill the bacteria) which is why so many TB patients went to the south-western united states in the late 1800s. like Doc Holiday. Verdanturf town could be like the old Sanatorium towns in the wild west especially since it is near the mountains and desert. If wally had TB and went into remission or was cured/treated wally would once again grow strong and lead a healthy life as. the biggest flaw to this theory is if they can cure TB then they wouldn't need to send him to a sanatorium as antibiotics are used as treatment ( to limited effects) Also it is never mentioned that anyone else gets sick. But hey..... its just a theory ;)

I'm not really sure if it's possible if he could have tuberculosis, isn't that an airborne disease? If he did, everyone around would have been affected hence he would need to wear a mask at all times to prevent the spread of the disease, and if I'm not wrong, you would have to be on medications for a long time to ensure you don't get a relapse of tb again right?

Having Bronchitis is the worst. I stayed in bed for 2 weeks straight. There's no way Wally was up and walking around, battling, all with Bronchitis. When I would stand up, I would get dizzy and couldn't stand for over 5 seconds with passing out. I couldn't breathe well when standing either, all you have the strength to do is lay down sleep.

As an asthmatic, I can vouch that ProtoMario's argument makes sense. However, I still believe he has asthma. Why? Well, first and foremost there are two types of asthma: exercise-induced asthma, meaning you have asthma attacks when you engage in strenuous physical activity, and environmentally induced asthma, meaning you have asthma attacks as a result of inhaling things such as dust or pollen. It's common to have a combination of both, which is what I have, but it's still possible, and not even uncommon, to only have one or the other. Now, of course Wally has environmentally induced asthma, hence why he has to move to Verdanturf Town for the fresh air, but there is no evidence of his having any exercise-induced asthma, which means running from gym to gym, mountain climbing, and rigorous battles would not present any issue. But what about the issues of environments, like sandstorms and ash? That should affect him, right? But, in all versions of generation 3, the first pokemon you help Wally catch is a Ralts. The Ralts evolutionary line, especially in generation 3 before the introduction of Gallade, was especially known for one thing: putting up protective barriers. It's so well known for this, in fact, that Gardevoir has "garde" (French for "guard") in her name. What does this mean? Well, I propose that Ralts, then Kirlia, and eventually Gardevoir used their specialization in psychic barriers to protect Wally from motes of potentially harmful substances, such as sand or ash, keeping him in a sphere of clean air to protect him from asthma attacks. It could even be argued that these barriers could maintain air pressure as Wally climbs Mt. Chimney, protecting him even from altitude sickness! And as for the point of the issue "being cured", it is worth mentioning that it could simply be referring to the fact that he'd stopped having asthma attacks since he was in a clean environment. Or, if that doesn't seem sufficient enough, it is also possible for asthma to go into remission. I had a decade of my life without a single asthma attack. Then one day I had a near fatal asthma attack caused by allergies, and from then on I had consistent issues with asthma again. Had Wally's asthma gone into remission while he was in Verdanturf, it would appear to be "cured", while his Ralts would ensure it stayed that way by protecting him from anything that might aggravate his asthma.

He came home from the hospital at just short of 6 months weighing 6 pounds more than at birth, and was on oxygen for the next four months (the nurses came over every day, and we had that little sign in our window). To this day he still has twitchy airways, and occasionally uses an inhaler. Wally could also have depression. Those who suffer from depression can come off as frail, quiet, and standoffish. His folks were going to send him to Verdanturf as a means of leaving Petalburg City because the quiet, clean town is an ideal place to go clear your head. Catching Ralts, the Feeling Pokémon, could have very well changed his emotional health, both and by means of litteral change as well as bonding. Even though Wally could have been giving off little emotion. Ralts could have filled in the spaces with happiness. Maybe a little far-stretched, but just a theory. Sometimes mental illness can be simply shrugged off as "[so-and-so] is very sick."

Dude you have no idea what you are talking about. I am a med student, people with asthma can be without symptoms for very long periods, different people have different causes of their exacerbations. Commonly things such as cold air, dust, exercise etc. A lot of asthmatics can participate in exercise normally and will rarely need their inhalers.

I have a question that could possibly be a theory for your next Pokemon Theory series. Can Pokemon understand people? And If so, why can't they speak English or Japanese? Because I'm sure that if they can understand what their trainer is saying, they can speak normally. And they've shown in nearly every episode of Pokemon that a pokemon will follow their trainers orders without problem. I know I'm not the only one who wonders this.
@yaboytev91819 жыл бұрын
I'm currently watching the first season of Pokemon, and in the episode The Maiden's Peak, the ghastly that was haunting everyone could speak English clearly. So i believe most Pokemon can, they probably just don't have the right vocal structure to speak as humans do.
@ShinSnipes9 жыл бұрын
Tevyn J Ah yes you do bring up a good point, but my way of debunking that would be, in that episode, Nurse Joy I think it was, said that the candles would show the lost spirits where to go if they get lost, so maybe the gastly's were spirits of dead humans. That's my opinion, I could be wrong however
@KenikoB9 жыл бұрын
Darth Shin Pokemon can talk English, they just need to learn it. The "Pokemon language" is their natural way of speaking, but as shown with Meowth they can learn English if they work at it. Also, I believe the ghost Pokemon, other than those who's pokedex entry says otherwise, are the ghosts of Pokemon, or are possibly born as such, since in the first games in Lavender town the Marowak was not a ghost after using the Silph Scope but looked like a live Pokemon, and it doesn't really make sense for a Pokemon graveyard to be filled with human ghosts and not Pokemon ghosts.

"pokemon theory"? more like webMD...
@fenrisulf1r9 жыл бұрын
Proto, I have a theory that includes a fair bit of speculation, but I think it's worth considering. It opens the door to allow Wally to have had asthma and have been healed from it. To discuss this theory, let's begin... at the end. Take a quick look at Wally's team from Victory Road. It strikes me that this kid, who is given a sort of caricature (or archetype) of being weak and sickly, would make it this far, this quickly, with possible disabilities, with only 5 Pokemon in his team. Is it accurate to assume that Wally only managed to capture 5 Pokemon as he defeated every Gym Leader and dungeon in the region? I think it is more accurate to assume that Wally once had a sixth team member, who he had to say goodbye to in an emotional farewell tribute episode (such as Ash had with Butterfree in the Anime). I posit that this farewell happened right before the player encounters Wally at Victory Road--the farewell gave Wally the hope, strength, and resolve we see him with at the beginning of the battle... and enough maturity to not lose hope when the player ultimately defeats him and his mere 5 Pokemon. What could that Pokemon have been? Considering Wally's miraculous recovery, it would very well have been a healing Pokemon, such as Chimecho or Chansey. But I want to go further. Why would Wally have set free his Chimecho or Chansey? Perhaps there were some reasons, such as the reasons why Ash let his Butterfree go, but I think, given Wally's status as miracle-boy (seriously, how could he have swept through the region so quickly, coming back from being 3 gyms behind to finally outpacing the player?), that he might very well have been visited by, say, Jirachi, or even Celebi. Either of these Pokemon could have very well healed him, and not only that, but given him the miraculous ability to blaze through Hoenn. And then, as Wally approaches Victory Road, Jirachi/Celebi parts ways with him, imparting some kinds of words of strength and reassurance that now Wally has what it takes to continue on his own. Okay okay, I know it may sound like a load of fan-fiction. But consider this for a second: the writing behind Pokemon always falls back to these happy themes (trust in friendship, never give up hope, treat others (namely, Pokemon) as equals and not as beneath you, etc.). It's far more likely that if Nintendo were writing this story, Wally wouldn't have just been healed and gotten better because of air. Wally would have gotten better so that the player could have learned some lesson about trusting Pokemon and having friends or something. It can't have been simply the air of Verdanturf that healed him; it must have been Pokemon. Or hope. Or something.
