I feel like Unova shouldn't be that close to Sinnoh. In Black and White there's a conversation between Mistralton Gym Leader Skyla and Professor Cedric Juniper. In this conversation, at one point Skyla says "you're talking as if places like Kanto and Sinnoh are right around the corner!", implying that, while Sinnoh and Kanto are indeed close together, Unova is definitely not close to them. In fact, it is implied that the easiest way to travel between the regions is by plane. This leads me to think that Unova has to be at least on a different continent than Sinnoh, Kanto and Johto, and possibly even all the way on the other side of the world. This would make sense, since in the first games set in Unova, you encounter _not a single pokémon from another region_ until after you've beaten the Elite 4, in other words, the region shares very little fauna with other regions. Then what about the connection between the Cave of Being and the Aquity, Verity and Valor caves? I feel like it's the Pokémon World's equivalent of the "digging to china" joke, the hoax of the transatlantic tunnel, a legend of the kind that inspired _Voyage au centre de la terre_ by Jules Verne, or a combination of those...

I agree and I also think it has an easy fix. I think the land to the west of sinnoh shouldn't connect with the continent that unova is on. If you just take away that strip of land and make them two separate continents all is good.

martijn van weele I agree. Hokkaido and the US are nowhere near each other.

I think they are still far enough apart for this to be reasonable. Also, Mistralton City is in the westernmost half of the region, so it is the farthest away from Sinnoh. Besides, there seems to be no organized way of travel in the strip of land between the two, so travel by plane is still feasible.

That Kanto/Johto map is a thing of beauty, definitely getting one!
@Borchert976 жыл бұрын
I think the only one you're wrong about is Hoenn's placement, Hoenn seems to have a good connection with the regions of Kanto, Johto, and the Sevii Islands, with many references across both regions, like Brawly and Bruno training in the Sevii Islands together, unlocking connectivity with the Hoenn region by retrieving a Ruby and Sapphire, the fact that Kyogre sleeps in HeartGold but Groudon sleeps in SoulSilver, indicating maybe the two legendaries would sometimes flee from Hoenn to rest from their battles, because if we split the games continuity up between the "red" games and "blue" games, that means HeartGold would take place after Ruby, and SoulSilver would take place after Sapphire, and if you combine the games in that order, you get one of each Groudon and Kyogre, additionally, a lot of Pokemon in the Johto Safari Zone not only are also available in eastern Kalos, but in northern parts of Hoenn as well, like Zangoose, Trapich, and Cacnea. Also, the Deoxys from ORAS, while not necessarily present in the GBA universe, might have a counterpart with the Birth Island Deoxys, which is available in FRLG and Emerald, it's also Island 9 of the Sevii Islands, and you can visit Island 8 and 9 from Emerald, which suggests that Hoenn is close to the Sevii Islands, and by extension, Kanto and Johto. The Sevii Islands also have a nod to the Battle Tower with the "Trainer Tower", and use braille puzzles, only otherwise seen with the Regi trio in Hoenn and Sinnoh. In the GBA universe, the Deoxys may have successfully crash landed, albeit from a much smaller meteor, but landed onto Birth Island. That Deoxys may be the multiverse counterpart to the one fought in ORAS. Island 8 also serves as an alternative resting place for both Ho-Oh and Lugia, another visitable area from Emerald. And lastly, a lot of the people and Pokemon at Hoenn's Battle Frontier are clearly of Johto or Kanto origin, especially the Frontier Brains. So I've modified your map, by sneaking Hoenn in south of Johto, and moving the Sevii Islands a tiny bit east to accommodate this fitment, I think that awkward triangle portion of land sprouting south from Kalos is getting in the way a little, Hoenn clearly isn't too close to regions like Kanto and Johto are to Sinnoh and Kalos by way of all the available lore, but it certainly shouldn't be that close to Unova like you have it, Unova was clearly stated to be much, MUCH farther away from the regions before it than they are to each other(this stated before Kalos was known). Anyways, the fact that you can visit some of the Sevii Islands in both FRLG and Emerald suggests they're close, but that's not all, those two games have a cave by the same name Altering Cave, which the inside layout is identical in both, clearly suggesting either, the two caves are connected if you could dig deeper, or the same person, Pokemon, or group of people/Pokemon had visited both Hoenn and the Sevii Islands to make both caves. Also, the player character and his family in the Hoenn games are from Johto. Anyways, I also think the Pokemon world, even down to it's layout, would be largely based on the real world's layout, that is why Unova was stated to be farther away from Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh, because those four make up Japan. In my version of the map, you have all of the Japan territories to the easternmost side, then Kalos in the middle representing the placement of Europe, Unova west of that representing the Atlantic side of America, and then Alola on the westernmost end, representing it's closeness to Japan, yet also representing the Pacific side of America. i.imgur.com/JOv5eBF.png

I believe the continents are still named like their Earth counterparts, and they are in a similar place on the globe, just with slightly tweaked shapes and geography. In the Pokémon world, the emphasis seems to placed more on smaller regions, rather than countries. There is no United States of America, but there is Unova, Orre and Alola. There is a North American continent though.

At first, I thought it was weird to have the region based on France to be so close to the regions based on Japan, but then I realized that Coastal Kalos and Hoenn share a ton of Pokemon, even moreso than Mountain Kalos and Kanto and Johto. So since Unova was the first region to be considered 'far away', that means Hoenn wasn't and should be near Kanto and Johto, so Kalos being next to Johto fits perfectly.

Also, Ferrum means iron, so maybe Gold, Silver, Iron? I think it could be an isolated island firstly populated by People from Johto? Maybe by the equator because of "Gaia Energy", or maybe they have just learned in there isolation to harness infinity energy using Z-crystal like stones, and also burst attacks are kinda like Z-moves, so maybe? Idk leave you're thoughts and a like so Toby can see this.

I've always been annoyed by the lack of continuity amongst different games. I can understand retconned stuff, like a lot of the Pokedex entries in gen 1 mentioned real countries but I get that at that stage they didn't imagine the Pokemon world would get as massive as it is. But I don't see any excuse for two different relatively current games showing different looking maps of the same area, just seems lazy.

Just a thought, the saying in Unova about how the deepest part of the cave is said to reach all the way to Sinnoh, in my opinion is probably an Easter egg type thing about how in America there is an urban legend/saying that children are told and it goes, “if you dig a hole in the ground deep enough eventually you will end up in China/Japan on the other side of the world” and I’m thinking that since Unova is based off of an American place then it stands to logically infer that they may have adapted an common America saying to the game universe. Which tells us that Unova is/should be on the opposite side of the globe from Sinnoh. This actually works great too because Orre is based off of USA state Arizona so I’m thinking that Orre and Unova are on a separate continent that is on the opposite side of the globe from the Sinnoh, Kant’s, Johto regions. Hope this helps.
@MaxArceus6 жыл бұрын
One thing that I find very unlikely about this, is that Mt Coronet and Mt Silver are regarded as basically the biggest mountains there are.. yet in the map you've made to connect them, there's a gigantic, region-sized mountain range in between the 2, that's obviously far bigger than either of them.

I think this map still works with some adjustments with Galar (gen 8) now existing. I'm not sure if you've seen with maps but I think GameFreak has directly put Galar right above Kalos. So maybe Sinnoh is farther east meaning more north of Kanto than Johto. Also, with your theory the Mt Coronet being equivalent to the North Pole, that could put Johto/Kanto as far north as say Canada for reference. Still warm enough for seasons but not south enough for any tropical areas, which makes sense because there's no tropical area in any of those regions. Now I know said due to geography of Kalos and Hoenn, Hoenn is west of Kalos....but thanks to the addition of the safari zone in Johto, there a big cliff there and the real world equivalent of Hoenn is actually sideways. Would it be possible that Hoenn is south of Johto and Alola southwest of Kalos (still coinciding with the "east" reference?

Whenever I see a fan region, the thing many fans seem to ignore is that no one region is that big. Like the closest we have is Kalos which is the size of France, but even that's not that big (we're talking at most the size of Johto and some of Hoenn). But like when I see an Australia themed region, fans always use all of Australia, ignoring that Kalos is only around the size of New South Whales, which is only 25% of all of Australia. So for me, a major rule of thumb whenever one wants to make a full blown region, it's imperative that fans stick to size restrictions. This means that if we get a region based on California, it'll either be based around Northern California or Southern California. An Australian based region would most likely need 3 separate regions, one for New South Whales, one for Queensland, and one for the western part. India would be very similar with size restrictions due to how massive it is, a Canada region would most likely be the area of Vancouver, the pacific North West would only focus on either the Seattle area or Portland area, etc.

@michaelcard17257 жыл бұрын
I have two major problems with this map. Firstly Sinnoh is NOT a polar region if it were, at least three quarters of it would be covered in snow at all times. The only places that have permanent snow are the upper reaches of Mt Coronet, routes 216/217 and Snowpoint City, which all have permanent snow due to being at least halfway up one of the tallest mountains in the Pokemon world. Yes, Sinnoh is north of Kanto/Johto, but not that far north. It is highly unlikely to be as far north as the UK is in our world. Secondly, and more importantly, these regions are ridiculously large. While not neccesarily geographically identical, or even in the same geographic locations, the regions are likely roughly the same size as their Earth counterparts. Indeed, the comparitively short distances involved suggests that some of the regions based on larger areas, like Unova and Kalos, may well be quite a bit smaller than their Earth counterparts. Your map shows the first four regions, based on less than half of Japan, taking up the better part of half of what is clearly an Earth-sized planet. The scale of your map compared to the Pokemon world simply does not make any sense. Still, it was a fascinating video, which you clearly put a lot of thought and effort into. Despite disagreeing with you on those two points, I still think you have everything in roughly the right positions relative to one another. So, overall, you did a really good job.

Hi Toby! I thought of an idea for a theory. What if the reason ash doesn't age because when he died in the episode with gastly, haunter, and gengar it stoped his body from aging but his soul is aging that explains why he is not aging but is getting more mature over time.

In my version of the Pokemon World, every region "takes the place of" whatever location they were based off of. For example, in my version, where we have Paris, France, in that "exact same space" (relatively speaking) would be where Kalos is in the hypothetical version of their World I've envisioned. Sure, there may be inconsistencies with that, but in a hypothetical alternate version, who's to say I can't make a few re-writes?
@megaplays27487 жыл бұрын
Mr. Pokirby I've thought the same thing as well

Same. As cool as this theory is, I don't agree with all the positions because I imagine there are more regions representative of other countries/places. This map cuts out the majority of the Euro-Asian continent by connecting Johto and Kalos directly.
@StaraptorEagle7 жыл бұрын
Mr. Pokirby I thought the same thing. Well before Kalos existed, I used to pretend France existed.
@gloriaa.21097 жыл бұрын
I always thought the same thing. Then I became convinced that this was the case when I saw how similar in shape the regions were to their inspirations and saw the globes scattered around Sun and Moon. The globes clearly had continents in the shapes and sizes of Africa, Europe, and South America on them. I'm pretty sure that many people have already noticed this, but it's an interesting choice from GameFreak.

Coming back to this a year later after the announcement of the Galar region, kind of reinforces your theory as well. (I've always thought the same, just makes sense).

I think that the regions are in the same places their inspirations are in real life. Sinnoh is not just north, but northeast and across a channel. Hoenn is southeast of Kanto and Johto, and the map we see is actually sideways. Kalos, Galar, and the new gen 9 region are next to each other, and across the ocean from Unova. Also, I can only assume that Unova replaces part of the US East Coast, from Delaware up to Connecticut. The lining up in Johto and Kalos is because they're both mountainous terrain. Unless there's a trans-Siberian railway in the Pokemon world, Sycamore probably flew to the equivalent of Italy or Germany and then took a train into Kalos. The lining up of the sea Pokemon in Kalos and Unova is because they're both on the equivalent of the North Atlantic
@arrogantvegan31677 жыл бұрын
While i really like the map, i realised a hole in it while playing through Alpha sapphire recently. Mr. stone states that the Kalos region is far away, in the beginning of the delta episode. This of course makes it unlikely that Kalos is as close as shown on your map. I dont have a better placement of Hoenn myself, but i would love to see what you could come up with.

It's actually possible to purchase an official map in Japan. I bought one in the Pokemon Center, it only includes the regions up to Gen 4 though. And it's literally stated in Green/Blue/Red (Japanese version) that Kanto is in Japan and that Major Bob (3rd gym leader) is American
@FireallyXTheories7 жыл бұрын
Pokémon Conquest quite obviously mentions the other regions and Pokéballs. I like the map, but personally (take my opinion with a grain of salt), I think it should have Rensei (Pokémon Conquest's region), because, even if you can't "transfer" Pokémon, it seems largely isolated, similar to Alola. In fact, it's confirmed to be an island and one game where Arceus actually bothers to visit the player, outside of events. To my knowledge, the only games to actually have Arceus as a character involved at all are Conquest and Super Mystery Dungeon. Only one is confirmed to exist in the Pokéworld from the game itself, and that's Conquest. But that's just my thoughts. Great video! Gave me a lot to think about. : )
@zephyrias6 жыл бұрын
that could be an interesting take on arceus. if theres only one, it means it is capable of travesering to various dimensions ie. human world (the pokemon games including ransei) and the MD games. now that ultra wormholes exist. its possible arcues uses those wormwholes or some means of dimmension hopping to get around.

I've got a good one: In all games from gen 4 to 5, in the GTS and in every Pokemon Center we have a globe with the locations of the human world, in Guzma's room at Po Town we also see a world globe similar to the one of our world (and probably there are more cases where it's shown the globe of our world), in the Kanto games, it's mentioned that Mew was found in SOUTH AMERICA, but the point is, there are a lot of references of real world locations in Pokemon games, and as we know every pokemon region is based on a real world places. Kanto, Johto, Hoenn and Sinnoh are based on parts of Japan, Unova in New York, Kalos in France, and Alola in Hawaii. The conclusion is: These regions are actually located just like their counterparts are located in our world but there are many other regions(the other places in our world) where there isn't a Pokemon game based on, but doens't mean they're nonexistent.

"Eastern Influence" doesn't this mean that Kanto and Johto are to the East of Alola, not to the West?
@louish50687 жыл бұрын
J Mell Kanto and Johto are east to Alola on a map he literally said that it was like that in the vid
@jmell4587 жыл бұрын
If you were in Alola, according to Toby's map you would have to travel West to get to Kanto. But the sign that says "Eastern Influence" refers to Kanto/Johto being to the East OF Alola, not Alola being TO the East of Kanto/Johto Because Johto is the influence, which should be to the East of Alola "Eastern Influence"
@blueblade61747 жыл бұрын
J Mell it's east across the entire globe when on the full world sized map. Yeah, it's closest to the west, but like in real life, America refers to Aisa as the east, despite it being closer west of it.
@louish50687 жыл бұрын
J Mell But Kanto and Johto are technically east of Alola if u look on a map he says so in the video
@jmell4587 жыл бұрын
America refers to Asia as the East because that terminology originated from Europe, the West. You might as well say that Sinnoh is South of Johto because "Yeah it's closest to the North" but its "technically South if you go across the globe"
@mrmuffins9512 жыл бұрын
I definitely think Kalos is North of Kanto. If that were the case, the caves we find Mewtwo in line up, and it’s closer to Sinnoh where Sycamore apparently came from. If Kalos were straight west, of Johto, it wouldn’t make sense for there to be a train only connecting Sinnoh to Kalos when there is already and East to West train that connects Johto to Kanto. Hoenn should also probably be south of Johto then because you can reach Birth Island in the Sevii Islands to catch Deoxys from both Kanto and Hoenn.

Trevisk It's not to scale. That's the short answer. There's only so much you can put in a game. New York is crammed pack with stuff, while the real life Kanto has its iconic locations more spread out.

Doing a pause of studying for my finals to enjoy the video! I discovered your channel through the map videos and these are def my favourites. I mostly agree with your map (I would place Alola souther though) but I feel like the southern hemisphere is too empty! I would love to see a southern-hemisphere like region in pokemon in which climate is kind of "flipped" and we get the hotter regions up north.

You got me convinced that Kalos is practically between Johto and Hoenn, and that it is part of the same continent as Johto (and Kanto and Sinnoh of course). What if there was a very deep cave in Stark Mountain that connected to the cave in Unova? Plus we've seen that with the underwater tunnel, they aren't neglectful of the idea of pathways under the sea. It says the cave goes deep, but in what sense? Deep as in length, or maybe that and deep underground..? Because it seems like that could be plausible

As to the thing regarding the cave "connecting" Sinnoh and Unova. It could just be magic that you get teleported to Sinnoh when you leave the other side, and vice versa.

To further support the Hoenn placement, the Embedded Tower from HGSS is said to be the closest point in Johto to Hoenn. And the tower is along the cliff routes leading the safari zone which head to Kalos in your map and eventually to Hoenn. So, more supporting evidence!!

Game Freak has actually specifically said that each region in the games is based of of somewhere in real life Here's a quick list Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh are all based off of places in Japan Kanto is based off of the real Kantō region of Japan Johto is based off of the Kansai region of Japan The Hoenn region is based on the real-world Japanese main island of Kyushu Sinnoh is based off of the Japanese island of Hokkaido Meanwhile, Orre, Unova, and Alola are all based off of places in America Orre is based off Phoenix, Arizona Unova is based off New York And Alola is very clearly based off Hawaii Kalos and Galar are based off France and the UK Ferrum (the region in Pokken Tournament) bears a strong resemblance to Iriomote Island, the largest of the Yaeyama Islands in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan The Ransei region from Pokemon Conquest is based off Feudal Japan Even the regions in the Pokemon ranger games, Fiore, Almia, and Oblivia, are based off of places IRL Fiore is based on the Japanese prefectures Okayama and Hyōgo, as well as Shodo Island of the Kagawa prefecture Almia is geographically based off Greece and Turkey Oblivia seems to be based off the Oki Islands of Japan So, knowing this information makes it pretty easy to know where the regions are IRL (two more things: (1. credit to Bulbapedia, since I got a decent amount of this information from there) (2. sorry for the long comment)

I'm now curious where Galar would be. I feel like it would be somewhere East of Hoenn. That would pretty much sandwich it between Hoenn and Kalos, so given France and England's connection, it would be fitting in real life, and it would very much be close enough that Zigzagoon would be able to travel to Hoenn some way and adapt to the more lazy life there. However, it would be kind of difficult for Ponyta to get there, likely, as it's only found in the Fire-Type Friend Safari. And since Galar appears to just have ocean in the north, I'm not sure the part of the "peninsula" of sorts just south of Kalos would fit with it unless the map were to get redrawn again. Though, being on that that "peninsula" would position it in a possibly advantageous area for Ponyta, being closer to Johto and Kanto. I don't know the story, though, nor if any of the other regions are ever mentioned or at least alluded to in Sword and Shield, so I don't know. If it were to be in the area that I stated, though, even thought it would be separate, I probably would include the Channel Tunnel for obvious reasons, lol.
