In-game currency, you can get from battle and such. It's more than enough even without purchase, just don't be greedy

Every week there's a rotation, 6 set of pokemon free to use. Iirc you get a 1 free pokemon to choose from when you finish the tutorial and they give a quest milestone/event for newbies to collect some pokemon. New pokemon are paywalled for the first month of release.
