Tapu Koko and Luxray's cries sound almost identical. Also, Decidueye, Pancham and Claydol's cries are very similar as well. And lastly Lunala and Zebstrika sound incredibly similar as well. And I'm glad that I'm not the only one who thinks that Mesprit and Diancie's cries are basically identical. Also, most of the cries in Gen 1 are basically the same due to the Gameboy's limited memory. Which's why I'm one of the very people that liked X/Y's updated cries.

Tapu Koko and Luxray's cries use similar notes to give an "electric" feel to their cries, but they aren't identical. Decidueye, Pancham, and Claydol don't sound anything alike either. The purpose of the update was to give Pokemon unique voices, which most fans were OK with, but those same fans still keep trying to find similarities in the cries for some reason where none exist. Also, the updated cries imo were all really poorly done. Heracross sounds like someone OD'd and is spazzing out near the end. Metagross sounds like someone trying to do a weird hissing noise. It doesn't sound like metal, like it did in Gen III-V. Raichu sounds like you're murdering a small mouse with an electric wire, and Dugtrio sounds like some kind of weird vacuum. Most of the new sounds lost their uniqueness and now the Pokemon sound like ugly masses of poorly tuned sounds. They shouldn't have updated the cries if they were going to be so shitty. They sound almost as bad as the Pokemon Stadium 2 cries lol.

***** Actually, Tapu Koko and Luxray both have the same two-note cries AND the electric aftereffect, and Decidueye, Claydol and Pacham all have short two-note cries. And I honestly think that not that many of the new cries sound that bad. Sure some sounds like garbage compared to the original, especially Reshiram and Victini, but it did more harm than good in the end. Not only does it make the Pokemon feel more lifelike and realistic, like I said, but the Gen 1 cries (and even some of the Gen 2 ones) no longer sound exactly the same, like I also said.

There are still enough differences to distinguish and identify them, though. I can see what you mean with Decidueye and Pancham, since their notes do follow the same pattern, but you'd have to split hairs to compare them to Claydol's cry, especially if you listen to it in R/S for the origin material. Claydol's cry has a rise in the middle, Decidueye and Pancham have notes that calm down later. I think the Pokedex still does that thing that measures frequency for Pokemon cries for reference. Not all of the Gen I and Gen II Pokemon cries that were similar to others sounded exactly the same. Many were sped up or had their notes changed. The closest you can get to identical is Charizard and Rhyhorn (Rhyhorn's cry is at a very slightly lower pitch if I recall). Starting in Gen III, all cries were purely unique, and most similarities observed were placebo. I used to think Torchic and Bonsley sounded identical until I listened to them more closely. And I do agree that the sound change did more harm than good. They did acquire uniqueness, but at the great cost of quality.

I hate how they changed some of the cries in the newer games. Take Flygon and Escavalier for example, they sound really generic now when they had awesome cries before.

The reason the gen 1 cries sound so similar is because they had a few set sounds and just changed the pitch for some pokemon

*Eevee, Flareon* and *Jolteon* sound kind of similar except *Flareon* and *Jolteon* sound lower pitched than *Eevee. Vaporeon* sounds particularly distinct but also sounds _somewhat_ similar as well.

You have to realize- until G.7/G.8, everything was reduced to save space. So they just reused and broke up different pitched sounds

I like how for the newer gens, though the cries sound similar, there is quite a bit added to each once to make it distint not only to the pokemon, to what its design may be or its type while in gen 1 its literally the same but with different pitches or cropped

The reason for this is to keep enough room in the cartridge to fit everything, they only put about over 30 cries but they coded them to be played in different variations for the sole purpose of having more room to work in the game. They didnt find a good way to encrypt some space until Gen 2 thanks to Iwata helping out.

With the Girafarig and Porygon comparison, I find Porygon2 to be a million times cuter. Also, yeah, most of the Gen 1 cries are really 40-something cries with some variance to try to give unique cries.

I saw an interview with one of the devs once where he said a lot of the gen one cries were just variations of each other cuz the tech was so limited back then.
